I will be at the parking lot at Table Mesa at 5:00pm, to get an early start
on cutting it up. If you or someone else knows where the Terminator trail
is, we could have a group come in behind us, say at 7:00pm, and meet us on
the trail.

Bring some 14 tpi blades for the Sawzall, and get the oxy- acetylene
torch. The piece we are going to remove is the last one and it definitely
needs to be smaller to do it with Jeeps. We will cut it up and drag the
pieces behind the Jeeps, so a 4 banger will be fine. If enough people are
interested, you may not even have to drag anything. If I don't have to work
Saturday, I'll make a night of it and camp out up there.
Here's a list of equipment needed:
oxy-acetylene torch ------------------------------------------- Mike
Anderson
Sawzall and blades--------------------------------------------- Mike
Anderson
2- five gallon jugs of fire fighting water
Generator
work lights
Safety glasses
grinder

Email me with what you can bring. Anything that is not covered by this
Friday, I will take up with me.
All anyone else needs to bring is chains for dragging and heavy work gloves.
Don't forget plenty of water. If you have an extra seat for a worker, let me
know. People have expressed interest in helping, but don't have a way in!

Subject: help me diag clutch noises

My '78 Cherokee started making new noises a few days ago. Note -
AMC360/T18/D20/D44s - anyway, there are two distinct different
sounds, one with the clutch partially engaged, sounds like screech
screech screech very quickly. Is this possibly a bad throwout
bearing? The other is when the clutch is engaged (pedal out) in 2nd
and 3rd gear. This sound is almost like the flywheel or part of the
clutch assy is contacting the trans housing.

At first I thought these probs might be due to the clutch linkage,
but I confirmed that the pedal free play was correct as per the
Chilton's manual. The clutch assembly seems to engage fully,
although I get ever so slight rubbing noises with the pedal
completely to the floor. I can shift gears fine, so I gather the
clutch is completely disengaging. I haven't removed the inspection
plate at the front of the trans yet, but would that even help me
determine what's going on?

Note - this is a mechanical, not hydrolic clutch. I posted a similar
msg on a FSJ board and one member said he had a similar sound but it
eventually went away. I don't think I want to drive this when it's
making this much noise. I have only had this Cherokee for about 3
weeks, so I can't say whether it's done this before.

Any thoughts or ideas here would help me out. I don't know any
decent tranny shops around here (Chandler) so if anyone has a lead on
a decent shop please pass the information along. I eventually wanted
to put a dual friction centerforce in this beast, so maybe that time
is now.

Subject: Trail Report: Jeepers Jamboree August 4-6

Hi All, Sorry for the late report, but you know how it goes. The
trip started out at 7A.M. on Friday morning in Georgetown. After
receiving your bag lunch, it was a rally type start to the
trailhead. It's a good thing to be at the head of the line so that
you don't get behind jeeps that break down, of course hoping that
your jeep isn't the one that breaks down. Once at the trailhead, the
wheeling starts right away with some 4+ obstacles right off the bat.
Not even ten minutes into the trail, ie 2 obstacles, a YJ breaks a
rear axle. Luckily he was in a spot where every one could get around
him. From here on things go smoothly for me, I only got off the
trail once and luckily one of trail spotters (also known as the
little green men because of their green jumpsuits)was there to point
me in the right direction. The highlight of this trail is the
beautiful scenery. The Big Sluice was the highlight of the trail as
far as wheel'n is concerned, the Little Sluice was closed due to it
being...impassable? Oh'well mabye next time. Overall on the Arizona
trail rating scale...I would have to rate the trail as a 4+. Lots of
ground clearance is the key to this trail, and of course lockers help
too.

I made into camp at 1:30 P.M., which at the time I thought was an ok
pace after stopping for lunch and taking my time to enjoy the scenery.
There were about ten jeeps already in camp, so I felt good. So I
picked out a campsite and set-up my hammock. I kicked back and began
enjoying a few of my favorite beverages and getting to know my
fellow 'wheelers. To my surprise the last jeep to make it into camp
that night arrived at 3:00 A.M. The next day the list of broken
parts and trail tales went on forever. It was then that it hit me why
Saturday was left open, as an open day for rest and repairs. The
Jamboree has full repair facility set up for each run and by Sunday
morning every one was repaired enough to get them to the top of
Cadillac hill and hopefully home, or for the lucky ones the trailer.

Over all the trip was worth it and I would recommend it to anyone.
Just don't go expecting the most extreme trail, just one of the most
beautiful. I made lots of new friends and enjoyed the food and
entertainment very much. The drive to and from is very long and
tiring but was also very much an adventure. I will probably go back
for more fun in the future. If you go, make sure you're vehicle
is
fully prepared because this trail will find the weak link in you ride.

Later, Robert Brashears.

All in all, a nicely done article.

However, I didn't appreciate their labeling the Jeep commercials as being
those that tear up the ground at high speeds, etc. Perhaps it was not their
intention and that they used the Jeep word in a generic sense, which I also
do not appreciate. If memory serves me correctly, Jeep is one of the few
that has received some kind of award for the green attitude displayed in
their commercials. It was probably just the reporter's write-up that was
almost accurate, but not quite.

Other than that, they did a good job of explaining how many of us off-road.
I did wonder though about the comment that they took an hour or more to go
75'....must be some SERIOUS rock crawling! LOL!

The Little Sluice wasn't impassable (in July) but would have taken
forever to get a large group through. I was out there a few weeks ago
with a group of 5 ZJs. We figured it would take us all day just to get
through that obstacle and we only planned on being on the trail for
three days. We took the alternate instead.

Glad to hear you had a good time. After doing it with a small group I
kind of wonder how the organizers can move 100+ vehicles along that
trail and still be sane at the end. Our last day on the trail lasted
about 13 hours. Fortunately we made it up Cadillac Hill before it got
dark.

I plan on going back in 2-3 years.

After a few members showed concern about the "It's good for children too."
comment displayed on his page I decided to contact them.

Turns out that they never intended to imply it, they only were using it for
children to help keep their hands and feet in and for it to be used in
conjuction with DOT standard safety equipment. After pointing out that some
idiot out there may not think so cleary and use common sense(face it some
don't have any to spare), that they could file a lawsuit based on their own
stupidity if a child fell out, they have updated their site with a note so
that everyone knows it is not meant to replace any safety equipment, but be
used with safety equipment.

Just an FYI.

Ok to all that knew my Check Engine light is off.

Now I replaced both O2 sensors, not before it heated up the cat so bad it
broke the weld between the muffler and cat. I had that redone and the cat
checked to ensure it hadn't gone bad.

I have a 97 4 banger with:
High flow cat
HP Muffler
2.5" exhaust(I know its a bit big, but great on the freeway)
Jacobs Omni-Magnum
Turbo City Airtake Tube and Filter
Airaid Throttle Body Spacer

So everything should be running perfect, but I am getting some backfire on
acceleration, only occasionally, seems like a build up of some gas in the
cat area causing additional heat also. To me it seems like it is running a
bit rich. Now I did not notice this until after I put the TB Spacer on, but
that was during the timeframe the check engine light was on and the O2
sensors needed to be replaced. Could the TB Spacer be causing this? Are
there other mods I have done that might have caused this? Are there mods I
can make to reduce the rich mix? Do I need a new map sensor?

I really don't want to remove the performance mods as they have greatly
increased its performance on and off highway.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to bring this up again, but I have some more questions before taking
on this gas tank leak. First of all, it stopped leaking...no, I'm not out

something on top.

The tank is now about 1/4 full after weekend driving. Can I just remove the
skid/tank bolts and lower the tank for access to it's top side or will
several hoses need to be removed as the tank comes down? I called a shop
recommended by someone else on the list (I won't mention names in case
there's a turn-your-own-wrenches stigma :-) ), and they est. 2-3 hrs at
$60/hr to drop tank and repair this area. I don't want to create 3 leaks
while trying to fix one, so I won't be offended if someone who's gone thru
this operation says to leave it to the mechanics.

Thanks again,
Tom

Well, I was planning on going but the San Pedro River decided it wanted my
Jeep on Friday night, so looks like I'll be out of it for a while until I
can get everything fixed and all the sand out. Thank God for full coverage
insurance, huh? Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, yes I was crossing
the river by way of a road, so nothing illegal there...

Subject: RE: One more gas tank issue

On my Scrambler, it was VERY apparent that they installed the
fuel tank before dropping the body on it. As I lowered the tank
using a floor jack, those 1/4" and 5/16" hoses suspended the
tank until I cut them to allow the tank to drop free. Replacing
the tank was not much fun, and I should drop it again and do
it right: I had to make the hoses long enough so I could have
room to attach them to the fittings, then jack the tank into
position, all the while trying to keep the longer hoses from
getting kinked. How would I do it different? I would run hard
lines on the top of the tank, then attach rubber lines, jack
the tank up, then attach the rubber lines to the hard lines (cut
back) that run along the frame rail. I still need to do this.
Wanna have a "Drop A Fuel Tank" party?
Let's wait until it cools off...
Lisa
<snip> Can I just remove the skid/tank bolts and lower the tank
for access to it's top side or will several hoses need to be
removed as the tank comes down?
