Subject: TJ is Not For Sale

Sorry to keep bugging the club about this but&

After showing my wife what the "family" XJ needs to bring it up to snuff (6 or 7" lift for 33s, re-gearing, skids, bumpers, tire carriers&). She decided that upgrading the TJ wasnt such a bad idea&.

Heres the problem:

I have 33X12.5s with 4.11s on a 4 banger and open diffs. Offroad Im fine except for the open diffs, getting to the trail (highway driving) sucks, especially if there are any of those pesky hills along the way.

I know I need to regear to get back to stock performance and improve offroad performance but will it improve my highway at all? (anyone with a stock 4 banger speak up) Currently if there is a hill I have to drop to 3rd and run at about 4.5K to get up it at 60mph.

Should I go to 4.56 or 4.88? 4.56 looks right but.... there may be larger tires in my future. Other than having to shift through the gears quicker and reduced gas mileage are there any other problems with slightly over gearing?

Lockers With a standard tranny (d35) and NOT being able to afford ARBs would I be better off run LSDs front and back or just lockup the back and live with the problems on the street (70 mile RT to work daily). I'm not really a "rockcrawler" but I hate turning around. Figure I would get these done at the same time I regear and save a few bucks. Recommendations??? Lockrite, Powertrax, detroit....

Winch - Why is everyone buying winches that are rated a 4x's their vehicle weight (9K)? Is there some part of the winch equation I'm missing? and which is the best (Joe W. let me guess it's Warn :-))?

Also, I need the name of an axle shop that can do the work. I drive by 4 Wheelers on the way to work can they do the axle work or should I go to an axle specialist?

Thanks&

Rick

Due to the lack of response, I will be taking my Jeep up to lower terminator
to remove the ZJ. The mission has changed from getting the ZJ down to Phx,
to just getting it to the road.
In light of this, anyone who still wishes to help, meet me on the trail
because I'm going to try to get an earlier start. It will take multiple
trips with less Jeeps.
I'm going to try to be off the trail by 11:00 pm because I have to work
early Saturday morning.

FWIW - Harbor Freight has this unit on sale for $299.99 + free shipping. It
uses .030 wire, has wire feed, and is said to be able to weld up to 1/4"
steel. Welding range is 130amps. Will do 60" on a charge. It has a 24v
battery pack and weighs around 45 lbs. Recharges at household 120v

I had been looking at an on board system, when I ran into someone with one
on recent trail ride, and he indicated that it does very well. At that
price, it's worth a try.

goes:
98 TJ 6 cyl: After work, your battery is

What's wrong?
Answer comes on Sunday.

o Bad/loose battery cable
o Bad battery
o Bad voltage regulator
o Bad alternator
o Bad main computer
o none of above
o 2, 3 and 4
o Its a Jeep thang...

This is from the Utah 4WD Assoc, via Ed Melendy
---------------------------------
The other day, I found myself watching my hero Al Gore on TV. What a
piss-head he is. I got disgusted and thought I would go for a ride.
I 'd take my '76 Dodge 4x4, crew cab with a 360 to head out to get some
firewood before winter sets in. I added three quarts of oil to the motor as
it leaks real bad. That's why I park it on the side yard next to the creek
that runs into the American River. It's a lot easier as I don't have to keep
a bucket underneath it. It also makes it real easy to drain the radiator
fluid any time. With a puff of black smoke out the exhaust, it fired right
up. I threw a case of oil in the back (have to add a quart every 60 miles or
so), my chainsaw, a case of beer and my fully auto AR-15. On the way to the
forest in Mendocino County, I nearly ran off the road. I was in the fast
lane, doing about 53 when I was hungry and decided to pull out my sandwich I
made before I left. It seems some Loggerhead Turtle butter dripped from my
Spotted Owl sandwich and got all over my Fur Seal seatcover as well as my
Amazon Cayman skinned boots. Swerving into other lanes, the other cars
behind me had a difficult time in steering clear due to the black cloud. I
tried to wipe it up with my Canadian Goose down comforter I had in the cab,
but it was no good. I pulled off the highway and found I accidentally ran
over a rattlesnake and a family of Western Kangaroo mice. So far, things
were going pretty well.

6 quarts of oil and 9 beers later, I finally found my self in the middle of
a forest with these huge, reddish colored trees. The forest was very old,
even ancient. It seemed like a good place to find some firewood. I of course
parked the Dodge right over a nice sized creek. I got out and grabbed my
chainsaw and pulled and pulled. It would not start. Good thing I brought
plenty of aerosol hairspray cans saved from the 70's as for some reason,
spraying them into the carb would always get it started. I sprayed about 4
cans of hairspray till they were dead and the saw fired up. It starts much
easier since I took the muffler off. I cut up much of the dead wood laying
on the ground and quickly filled the truck. I decided, since I may be back
to get more next year, I would fall some trees to ripen for next year. It
took a while as I had to keep putting out small fires around me, but I
managed to get a few of the really big suckers down. I walked back to the
truck and saw downstream several steelhead just floating on the surface.
What a score! I snatched them up and threw them in the truck. I was picking
one up and saw two does wandering near. I unloaded a full 30 round clip from
the AR-15 and dropped them both. Another score! It's a good thing I keep
plenty of Styrofoam ice chests in the back. I barely got all the meat in.
With a full load of wood and meat, it took several more beers to get out of
the creek I was in. Turns out, the only way out was right through a marsh.
It's too bad that water snakes, toads, green turtles, tree frogs,
salamanders and otters are not good eating. Otherwise, I'd have had a lot
more meat to take home. The asbestos brake pads were wet and the truck was
hard to control while making my own trail through the saplings back to the
road.

The cases of beer and oil were gone and I rolled up to the house. I made
sure to park extra close to the creek this time cause I know how bad she
leaks when she's hot. The truck was so dirty, I would have to wash it with
bleach and other heavy detergents the next day. It took a few minutes but
the black smoke finally cleared. I unloaded the truck and went into the
house to call it a day. I grabbed a beer, lit up a Cuban cigar, pulled my
boots off, sat in my Grizzly Bear skinned chair and rubbed my feet on my
Leopard skin carpet. I turned on the TV and saw AL. I thought of the day I
had and how if he was with me, he would have seen the beauty of the forest
and that things were just fine with the environment. Maybe I'll invite him
next time...
