Subject: TR Terminator
I need help dragging the cut up pieces off Terminator this weekend,
preferably Friday night. We would be meeting up there at the Table Mesa
parking area at 7:00pm. The heaviest piece will be the front clip, with the
motor and tranny, the rest are all pretty light. You would need to bring
with you some chain or a tow strap to drag the piece out, some heavy work
gloves would be advisable as well because the metal is sharp. Hopefully,
there will be 5 rigs interested so we can make this in one trip. More are
definitely welcome to assist. It is up to the group if we all come in from
the exit end or run the trail beginning to end. We can decide how we want to
do that once we get there. If this goes off, I will bring my truck and
trailer to the exit of Terminator to haul it off. This means I will also
need a ride in. Any help would be appreciated.

I will second that, as some idiot is going to do just that. I think however
he meant that it would be good to keep childrens hands in and retraint that
way, he should have noted on his site to use it in addition to the standard
children safety restraints. They way it is worded almost makes it sound
like they replace them, which they don't.
Sad fact is that it only takes common sense to figure it out, but how many
times do we hear of someone suing over hot coffee they spill(usually the
same person who complained the day before it was too cold).
I think I will send him an email suggesting he clearify this, good point

Hey everyone,
I opened the garage door this morning to the drip-drip-drip of a gas leak
emanating from somewhere on the tank of my '87 YJ. There is no visible
damage to the tank or factory skid plate, but all this means is that I can't
see the dang source and will need to drop the tank. Problem is...it's FULL!
18 gal. full as I just filled up on Monday. Is it a colossal PITA to work
with a full a tank? Any tips/tricks/etc. to removing it? Will the "putty"
type epoxy for gas tank repairs work on a plastic tank? Should I make this
my first welding project? (just kidding on that last one!)

I'm not sure if this could be the cause of your leak but there was a
recall a while back on YJ's (not sure which years) for a defective
o-ring in the fuel sending unit. Of course, if you really topped off
your tank, maybe it could be. You should be able to get this fixed
for free.

I guess it is technically a gasket - not an o-ring. In any case, the
following is from alldata.com:

1. 624 FEB 95 Safety Recall # 624 Fuel Tank Sending Unit Gasket

I didn't see leaks at the 2 hoses nearest the left rear corner of the tank

Is there a web-site that someone knows of, off the top of your heads, to

On my 85, there are two rollover check valves in the tank with
fuel lines running between them and the sending unit. Perhaps
it is the grommet for one of these, or one of the hoses. Also,
the fuel return hose from the carb back to the tank might be
leaking. Dropping the tank is not fun--I have done it. Replacing
the tank is the tricky part...with all the hoses.

I hear that bar soap can be used to fix small leaks in gas tanks. You
might try that, then drive the Jeep 'til the tank is empty.

It could be something as simple as the grometts in the tank are shot.
They are only rubber and getting 13 years out of any rubber part
especially on exposed to gasoline is amazing.
Want to know how big of PITA dropping a full tank is? Can you say 6
pounds per gallon, because that is what you're looking at.

I want to thank you all for the responses, ideas and even offers to help!
It looks like the first thing I NEED to do is get some of that gas out of
the tank. Not only will that make dropping the tank easier, but it'll get
fuel away from the other potential leak paths (grommets, hoses, etc.) on top
of the tank.
Why does stuff insist on breaking when it's 8 bazillion degrees outside and
8.1 bz in the garage? :(
On a different note...next Saturday, 8/19, I'm trying to plan a run through
Bulldog Canyon, running it from Apache Junction to the Blue Point Bridge on
Bush Hwy. Plan would be to leave early (7-8 am) so that we beat the heat
and be done by noon. Vehicles are being allowed river access again at the
bridge, so would like to head to the water for lunch, some cold barley pops
and a swim after the run. Anyone interested???
Thanks again,
Tom

It's a 33x12.5 MT/R and I had to squat down and actually force the wheel to turn (almost knocking it off the jack, not very safe in hindsight).

That is about what I would have expected. The number I've heard for the
tracloc clutchs is about 20ftlb of locking force. If you figure that
the 33 is about 1.4 feet from the center anything over 14 pounds of
force should cause the clutchs to slip. Even if you double the locking
force you are only talking about a 30 pound weight hanging on the
outside of a 33" tire to break the clutchs loose. Kind of puts it in
perspective doesn't it?

Any help would be appreciated.

he meant that it would be good to keep childrens hands in and retraint that

Sad fact is that it only takes common sense to figure it out, but how many

I'm not sure if this could be the cause of your leak but there was a
recall a while back on YJ's (not sure which years) for a defective
o-ring in the fuel sending unit. Of course, if you really topped off
your tank, maybe it could be. You should be able to get this fixed

Thanks again,
Tom

be wheeling again(had a 94 YJ), so I got the Dana 44 rear and
UNFORTUNATELY got a 5 spd. So my future plans include a 4:1 reduction
and a Warn Winch(if my wife lets me).
So if ever your going wheeling some weekend hopefully now you'll know
who I am.
Oh ya, I live in East Mesa and it's dark green with a tan hard top
when I'm not wheeling.Hope to see on the trails!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom,
We are meeting the rest of the group at the small parking lot off Table Mesa rd at 7:00 AM on Saturday. Some of us are meeting at Union Hills and I-17 will be leaving shortly after 6:30 AM to meet the rest of the group at Table Mesa Rd. I hope this clears things up :)

Subject: Update for Saturday Night Run - Aug 12
As an update, we will be meeting at 7pm at the Texaco on the north side of the road in Gold Canyon Ranch off of I60. We will be on CB channel 4. There will be 4-5 vehicles at this point. Our plan is to run Lower Woodpecker (along with other un-named trails on the way) and then continue on to run possibly more trails depending on time.
Those who are interested please e-mail us with your name and color/make of vehicle so we don't leave without anyone.
Eben and Hilary

Subject: [az_vjc] Saturday Night Run - Aug 12
We would like to find out if anyone would be interested in a rock crawling run on Saturday Night. There are already two Jeeps going and we would like a few more to join us. We are thinking about running Box Canyon, possibly Lower Woodpecker and Lower Ajax but that is not written in stone yet - we are open to suggestions. We would like to stay around a 3.0-4.0 trail rating.
Please respond if interested.

> Hi. Dion again. Hope I'm not being a bother. Armed with your advice, I broke out the HiLift, jacked the driver's rear wheel off the ground. With the Jeep in neutral and the e-brake off, I could just barely turn that wheel by hand.

I want to thank you all for the responses, ideas and even offers to help!
It looks like the first thing I NEED to do is get some of that gas out of
the tank
Sounds like a daytrip to me....
