Is the Table Mesa Road clean-up going to include "the dump" - that area where
the shooters set out their junk as targets and then leave it there? It will
about
take an army to clean up that area alone.

I have a SCUBA class to teach this weekend, and I'll need to be back home by about 1:00
If we can meet on your side of town around 6:30am on Saturday, I'll be able to do the run. Since I'll be teaching very late Saturday night, Sunday morning would be extremely difficult for me.
Let me know if this works.

Reply to: *** kicked by trakloc rebuild.
Hi all: After bragging for the past week about how I was going to rebuild my Trakloc, I had my *** summarily handed to me this evening.
Went to a friend's home, with a better shop and some experience building diffs. Got the rear apart without a problem. Carrier on the workbench. Could not get the spider gears to come out.
Tried everything. Called everyone. Wouldn't move by hand. Wouldn't move when inserted in a vise. Wouldn't move in vise when axle shaft was inserted and attempted to turn. Wouldn't move when huge bolt was used to compress one gear upward thereby freeing the others.
Finally gave up and put the rear back together.
Questions: With both rear wheels off the ground, in neutral, e-brake off, when you turn one wheel forward by hand, the other wheel moves. This means the LSD is working, right? Also the clutch packs being so tight leads me to believe they're working.
However, when one wheel was placed on the ground, front wheels chocked, one rear wheel in the air, if you give it gas the wheel in the air spins. This leads me to believe it's not working.
Anyone have suggestions? I'm all ears. And just putting a locker in there is not an option right now. I am getting ready to lock the front, though. TIA

The tracloc will act as an open diff with one tire in the air. The trick to getting it to transfer power to that tire is to apply a small amount of pressure to the brakes. On the trail this usually amounts to a couple of clicks on the park brake which you should release once you get passed the obstacle. The Tracloc worked fairly well for me for a year until I got lockers front and rear.

The trakloc in my Scrambler got weak at about 90K miles. I was 4 wheeling in a tough spot and realized I had a rear wheel spinning while the other was also on the ground. I was told it would give out at around this mileage, and that's correct.
I have put a lock rite in a Toyota without any problems. I haven't messed with the trakloc in my model 20 yet. This is weird, it didn't seem that hard from the article.

I'd say it's weak...

The tech at Willy's Works in Tucson told me about re-building the trakloc using a bolt years ago, so I would give them a call and explain what happened. They may tell you about some "Jeep trick" that will get them out.
Good luck,

Here is how I got my spiders out when I put my Lock Right in. I put one tire in the air and one on the ground. I removed the cross shaft. I then grab the tire that was in the air and spun it. This easily walked the spiders right out of the carrier. Worked slick
as snot. Those spiders are in there pretty tight and maybe the extra leverage of the diameter of the tire will overcome the forces involved.
Remember, the rear end is still a differential. This means that turning one tire one way by hand will spin the other in the opposite direction. The LSD clutch packs simply help to distribute torque to the other wheel when torque is applied to the rear. When you
apply torque to the rear, the side gears are pushed INTO the clutch packs which delivers torque INTO the carrier and reacts back to the other axle. So if the vehicle is in the air and no torque is being applied to the rear end, then the clutch packs are essentially
doing nothing (much like a Lock Right). This is why applying the emergency brake helps with the LSD. This allows you to put more torque into the rear end (without moving more) and applies those clutches more firmly.

Subject: Re: *** kicked by trakloc rebuild.
I don't think your description of a limited slip is quite correct. You
are correct that it is basicly the same as an open diff. Where you are
incorrect is the way the clutchs operate. The clutchs provide a preload
of the spider gears to the case which keeps the gears locked to the case
until enough force is applied to overcome the preload. This makes the
diff act like a normally locked unit that unlocks under turning by the
clutchs slipping. This is the reason both wheels turn the same
direction when you rotate one wheel with both wheels off the ground.
There are units that have put speed sensors in to increase lockup as
spinning happens but the tracloc isn't one of them.
The problem with the Tracloc is it doesn't have a very high preload
rate. The numbers I've seen are in the range of about 20 Ft Lbs of
torque diff to overcome the clutchs. When you are off road and apply
the Ebrake you are using the breaks to get the clutchs back into the
preload range.
So now how do you test it. The first step is put both wheels in the air
and make sure both wheels turn the same direction when you turn one.
Next lock the drive shaft buy putting it in Park for a auto or gear for
a manual. Now attempt to turn one wheel. If you can turn it the clutchs
are shot. This last portion of the test is kind of subjective since if
the tires are large you will be appling more torque to the clutchs than
you would be with smaller diameter tires. Point is if it turns easy
they are bad.
If the clutchs are bad you can beef up the traction for a while by
putting about 1oz of ATF in the gear lube. This will cause the clutchs
to lock up; however, they will also chatter on the Street.
While we are on the subject of the Limited slip we should touch on the
issue of friction modidifer. The Limited slip fluid you by from the
dealer is there to reduce the preload effect of the clutchs my making
them slip more. This stops them from chattering by allowing them to
slip easier. It also causes the clutchs to live longer as there is less
friction when they slip in turns. If you run a good synthetic gear oil
like Royal Purple or Mobile 1, you do not need this modifier as the oil
is already slick enough.

You might try Randys Ring and Pinion web pages he describes a specical
tool to help install the spider/side gears. Also check a Factory Jeep
manual for the specs. to check out proper operation, sound like
your clutch packs may have warn out unevenly and causing more pre-load
Remember with one wheel in the air, and applying gas the ring and
pinion will multiply the torque from the driveshaft, so if 1st gear
is 3:1, and r/p is 3:1 thats 6:1, and if engine torque is 100 lbs./ft.
thats 600 lbs./ft. that the clutch packs will see, I sure hope they
slip. Good luck

This Sunday I will be putting my Chevy V8 in my CJ-5. One of my friends
will be welding the advanced adapters motor mounts to the frame. He
drill through the frame and the mount and bolt the mounts to the frame
and then do the welding. I think this may weaken the frame. Any
thoughts?

You can count me in If we leave as early as we did last time.

Remember with one wheel in the air, and applying gas the ring and
pinion will multiply the torque from the driveshaft, so if 1st gear
is 3:1, and r/p is 3:1 thats 6:1, and if engine torque is 100 lbs./ft.
thats 600 lbs./ft. that the clutch packs will see, I sure hope they
slip. Good luck
