Funniest part is, the recovery jeep had to be recovered after getting stuck on this hill on the way out.

The picture is deceiving, pos89xj was way up the hill and they were well out of the way in case the cable snapped.. The guys did a hell of a job, we were just glad we could lend a hand. And this pic was just after we got him off the edge.

pics definatley dont do justice. it was extremely steep. brian sat on top with his cable tied to my @$s end. then my cable was hooked to the chevy. i was chocked pretty damn good too. together we had 160'-180' cable out & 2-3 tow straps. not sure whats up with the chevy. front ds was spinning but no 4x4. both axle shafts felt good & none of the usual poping/grinding/clunking.

Now thats funny right there. Good thing I lubed up my winch last week otherwise I may have hurt you.

haa haa. yeah the recovery went well. with me sitting on top of the hill I only slid down a few inches when the pulling began.

Good times, lets do it again.

Thats fricken awesome...except for that my jeep isnt shown on the top behind the "rock Crawler" haa haa.

For the record, the black TJ in the pic on the left was the owner of the recovery CJ. The two doods were from his towing company with Shamrock or something. I dont know how it worked out but they were all there for free anyway so it all worked out in the long run since the recovery rig couldnt make it up to the truck anyway.

I am new to this, but from the video it looks like the guy in the safety vest is standing next to a winch cable tied to a tow strap, and I do not see anything heavy on the cable.

Is this safe because he was not near the metal cable, but a tow strap? Does the tow strap count as a "weight"?

Sorry for the newb questions, just want to learn.

BKTJ_LJ04

In my opinion it was not safe. In my honestly I never have personally put anything on the cable anytime I have used a winch. Should you...yes probably.

When we were pulling him out did your Jeep get pulled down the hill any? If so than there was a heck of a lot of stress on that cable, to be pulling two Connected Jeeps at a time.

there wasn't tension on the cable. josh was letting it out as the guy was being strapped backwards. no need for weight on it. the winch was just a safety line. if the winch was pulling, i would guess everyone would have stayed clear and the cable would have been weighted.

i gave josh's winch a workout last weekend and we definitely took all the necessary precautions.

You should never use a recovery strap with a winch as the recovery line stores energy and if the winch line breaks, you're in for trouble. However, with everything it's a call based on what you're actually doing. There really wasn't much tension used for this recovery. It was more used to keep the vehicle where they wanted it for the guy in the rear to pull him backwards. I would say it was pretty safe. Would have liked to see the bystander a bit further away. Might as well keep people completely clear unless they really need to be there.

It may be in the boonies but man there are trails out there for everyone. Trail ratings from 1 to extreme 5s, it really stinks that its shut down and restricted for the most part from use. It was nice to get out there, wish it was for a run and not an extraction, but it was well worth it.

There are trails out there that are not inside the park boundaries. Just have to know where to look for them. It was a beautiful morning today, then it got cold and started spitting on us a bit. But the wheeling was 75% good (only one of four broke). A few pics in a while, Photobucket is dragging.
