Correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that if you increase your gear ratio you will decrease your MPG equal to the percentage of the ratio change. Your low end performance/power will certainly increase but there's always a price.

The follow up trip to extricate the ZJ from Terminator took place Friday
night.
In attendance were myself, Bob Trenton, Joe Clarke, Ross Skinner with his
son Chris, and Greg Banfield.

We succeeded in cutting it up into 4 manageable pieces, And moving those
off to the side of the trail. We finished up at about 3:00am, so we didn't
make the attempt to remove the pieces from the trail yet. I took in a torch
set, Sawsall, generator, grinders, Portaband, extension cords and lights, 10
gallons of water for fire fighting, portable extinguishers etc. Ross ended
up twisting off a rear driveshaft and bending a rear spring, all of which we
repaired on the trail. That wasn't the only casualty, though. While
separating and moving the last 2 large body pieces, Greg lost his balance,
and fell forward into the twisted wreckage. He cut his shin on a piece of
jagged metal, over the top of a vein, which proceeded to bleed profusely. He
also ended up with small cuts and bruises to the underside of his arm and
torso, Ross administered first aid, Which of course, reduces Greg's chance
to live,..... ; )

A return trip will be necessary to get the pieces all out, I'm thinking
all the pieces could be dragged out by Jeeps, with the front piece being the
biggest challenge, since it has the motor and tranny in it.

It looks like this may be a new dumping ground for stolen burned cars,
as another turned up in the main wash by the sand and gravel outfit.

You are only partially wrong. There reaches a point in tire size and
gearing that lower gears improve the milage because they put the engine
back into efficcent operating range. They also lower the strain on the
engine. Think of it this way If you are pulling a grade such that you
cannot keep from loosing speed without down shifting, how much easier
the engine works when you do down shift.

I currently have the trac-loc in rear and lockrite in front of my 99 xj and the setup works really well. It's amazing how much more you can do with the front pulling you. I would do the lock-right in front and save $ to do the rear later. I finally got the $$ and bought a no-slip only because I'm doing a gear change at the same time.
My opinion,

I'll fix the discons, but want to avoid what looks like 1500.00 in ft

Yes you will notice a difference with 31's or 32's with that high a gear. It won't be horrible, but gas mileage will suffer and crawlability (I think I just made that word up) off-road will stink, especially having the auto. I have 3.55's w/33's and it's no fun with the auto. I just got my 4.56's to put in this weekend:)

4 Wheelers was gonna charge me $250 per axle labor for gears and locker install.
Erin
Jay Eller wrote:

That price on the Lock Right seems really high by about $40 to $50. Check
with 4Wheeler's Supply. I could probably get you one for around $260. Not
sure what labor should run for the front install. $1500 for front and rear
installs including lockers?? Seems pretty high. Should be about $500 in
parts (if looking at Lock Rights front and rear) and then labor of about
$200 in the rear and maybe $300 in the front. About $1000 total.
Just my thoughts. Want us to do it??

Oh, and remember 4 Wheelers gives 10% discount to club members. I talked with Barry down there, he was really nice and very helpful.

Roger Tomas wrote:

Glen,
I think it would be a perfectly acceptable strategy to put a locker in
the front only and try it out that way for a while. You can always do
a rear locker at a later time - I don't think there is really any advantage
to locking up both axles at the same time other than one less trip to the
shop. A front locker will definitely make a big difference. And you
won't have any negative characteristics in the rear by staying with the
Trac-loc. I think you might be able to find a cheaper price on that
Lockright, though. And you I know there are people in the club who have
installed lockers and who might help you install yours yourself.

As for the articulation thing, do you have some problem with the disconnects
or did you just not disconnect them because someone (I don't know who) expressed
concern about your disconnecting the sway bar? (Ok, it was me. But I said that
from the standpoint that if I had a new TJ, I would not want to bend up the
fenders. And I wasn't sure that you wouldn't stuff your fenders given your
lift and tire size and how well TJ's articulate with the sway bar disconnected.
So I chose to err on the safe side.) One advantage of your experience, though,
is that you now know a little more about the limits of your Jeep with the sway
bar connected.

I still stand by my suggestion of taking your Jeep out some place where you
can disconnect the sway bars and twist up the suspension in a more controlled
manner than an FR42 run just to make sure you don't stuff your fenders. That
way you can have a spotter check to see if your tires will stuff the fenders
before they actually stuff the fenders. If they do then you need either more
lift or something to limit the up-travel like bumpstop extension brackets.

By the way, during one stretch of the trail, John in the shiny new red TJ
with 35" tires was behind me and I heard his tires rub his fender flares
on more than one occasion. Hopefully, it was just the flares and not the
sheet metal.

Hi Glen: You've gotten some pretty solid advice on both sides of the argument. I'm in a similar position with my YJ. After taking everything (including my finances) into account, I decided to rebuild my factory rear Trakloc ($55) and put a Lockrite in the front diff (~$250).

For me that's the best and performance and price combination. YMMV.

And take a chance on doing your own locker, particularly a Lockrite, which doesn't replace the carrier. Supposedly a straight-forward mod for an average wrencher. Save yourself some $$$ and learn your Jeep more intimately. Good luck.

Stu, are your commetns still valid considering the LSD I have (assuming it's wotrking propely) or did you miss that?

Yes, the warrantee's from Discount are transferable. I sold some BFG's, with

Is there any way to improve the carburetor? I have the stock gas pump (mechanical) 4bbl intake on the 258 engine, btw works awesome!

What I did to mine was....on the two bowl vents (the 2 tubes that stick straight up) put 1/4" vent line over them and connect it with a vacuum "T" in the middle. then zip tie the vacuum "T" to the air cleaner stud. As high up as possible, with the 3rd part of the "T" sticking up. Then both bowls will breath out of the "T" but when you get vertical or sideways fuel won't spill back into the carb.
I would also run spring loaded needle valves. And run the float level down about a 1/4".

That is how I ran mine, Hope it helps.

After the short discussion about fund raising by the AZVJC. And reading
Chris' description about what it takes to get car show organized and
knowing what it takes to organize a 4-wheeling event like the Jamboree,
etc. I have another suggestion. Why not proclaim a month to be a fund
raising month. Ask for donations at trail rides that take place during
that month. The only logistic that has to be worked out is who will the
'banker'. I have done evening trail ride as land use fund fund raiser on
National Trails Day (first weekend in June) for the last two years. The
first year I collected $36. This year I collected $56. The check will be
