Here is a link to a message I just posted.

http://jeepsunlimited.com/ubb/Forum14/HTML/001423.html

My buddy, Joe Ruby, from Phx took the pictures and sent them to me. He is
in the Silverton area doing some Jeepin'!

Though you all might enjoy some better quality photos.

I am certain there is a liability issue involved here. I spoke with my
friend, Joe Ruby, who hiked up to the spot and took some photos. He said he
was nearly blown off the mountain side on account of the 50 MPH winds. I
personally think they have their reasons for doing so. There is a great
chance for doing serious damage to equipment and worse yet, people! In
situations like this, trained professionals might be the correct
solution....not 4x4 happy volunteers.

I am pretty sure that everyone in this club has pulled a stupid human trick
on the trail, maybe not to the extent of national news coverage, but
driving how and where we do usually incurs some mistakes. Everyone is
quick to point out the lack of good judgement these fellows used, how
ignorant they are, etc. We can bet the farm these guys learned a lesson,
better yet had a crash course in land use issues, BLM policy, and vehicle
recovery. None of this would have happened had an experienced 4-wheeler
with them. Hopefully the word is out on driving up really big and steep
mountains off the trail at night.

Off my soapbox,

Wanted to let the list know that we completed our first SOA on a CJ7 as
Toybox Off-Road. We've done a few in the past for friends, but none as
Toybox Off-Road. Things came out really well and hopefully we will have a
writeup soon on the work that was done. Took a day and the ride is better
than before. A few tweaks still to make, but overall a grand success.

If anyone is interested in what we did and can't wait for the writeup, just

Hi all: Thanks a lot to the folks who took their own time to clean up
someone else's mess on Lower Terminator. Great job.

Put me down for two T-shirts when they're done. Also, whoever is handling
the design, I'm pretty handy with Photoshop and make some T-shirt templates
already. If you want, I can mock up a couple different designs on different
colored shirts and then maybe post them on Photopoint for everyone to see.
We could have a vote as to which design the majority likes the best, then
produce that shirt.

Just a thought. It would be pretty simple for me to do this.

I clipped this quote out of the on-line Denver Post:

"The BLM's position is that an expert must handle the extrication, and the
BLM will monitor any attempt, Hoffman said."

Mr. Hoffman is a BLM official at the local office. He did not specify the
definition of an expert (no jokes please ;-). I do not know at what point
the BLM changed their stance on this, but the statement was made on August
3. At that point, it is my understanding that they were NOT letting any
volunteers help with the extraction. The BLM considered it too dangerous
(and probably rightly so?). As I said before, I am sure there are liability
issues that none of us are aware of, just like last week's thread about the
DPS pulls you over for a trailer violation....you can't move it until the
problem is fixed....because the officer would be liable if he let you move
the trailer before fixing it.

Bob, I am not sure I can buy into your comment about "the more people that
help out, the less damage to the landscape". It is possible it might happen
that way, or, it could be "the more people that are there, the more they
muck the place up, etc." too.

Either way, the vehicles are off the mountain, and thank God, no one was
hurt. Let's all hope we never have to witness another situation like this
one.

It's too early in the week to know if I can attend yet. But, if I can, I'd be

Has anyone been to chiva falls? What would I need on my jeep? Would open
differentials be ok? The last time I went I was in a cherokee and I was
about 7, so I dont remember where it is or when the water flows. I
remember it being gorgeous out there. Any info would be appreciated.
Does the "club" want to make a run out there sometime?

I have to agree with Linda on this point. It is bad enough that they aren't willing to help, then they make matters worse by wishing ill-luck.

"They have no business being there. It's horrible," said Krebs. "Four-wheelers usually help each other out when we're in trouble, but we don't want any part of this. I hope it costs them a ton."

The damage to the 4x4 community was already done when the story went public, however quotes like this will only further alienate OHV users. Again, back to the old adage- "If you don't have something nice to say..."

Colorodo

I read in the latest report that the Colorado Assoc of 4WD Clubs has refused to
get involved in the recovery. I think that was probably not the best idea since
keeping good repoire with the BLM and other land management agencies means
sometimes doing things that are not fun. If this had happened in Arizona I
suspect that there would be many volunteers to help get those vehicles off the
mountain side. Why do I think this? Because I think, that by nature, we all try
to help each other out -- including the idiots. Heck, we all run into novice
4-wheelers that are in situations over their heads. This is just a more extreme
case. Why the Colorado Assoc would refuse to help out defies everything
organized 4-wheeling is all about. I am embarassed!

Just my opinion
Linda

Subject: HELP!

Does anyone have, or know of, a usable pair of heads for a 304ci V-8
(it's in a '76 CJ5) or as a last resort, the name of a fair and
reputable shop where I can get them rebuilt reasonably? I'm not looking
for any great performance enhancement, I just wanna get this thing
running on all 8. I have about 145psi compression on 6 cyl's, but #1,
and 2 (front cyl on each side) are at about 45psi. I pulled springs and
found loose guides, but don't suspect any serious damage.
Also...does anybody have any suggestions on where to get the rubber
parts of the filler neck (2 large hoses one big with a bend, the other
smaller and straight)?
Any help would be appreciated!!

TIA

I'd definitely be interested in doing this one. If there are still some of
the Tucson members around, I'm sure they can help out with directions and
maybe be talked into being the trail leader...

I have been to chiva falls about 3-4 times in the last 8-9 months,
same way in and out also(non trap). I would like to go again, can't
make this weekend 12-13, but could make it next weekend 18-20.
Saterday would be the best for me.

My husband and I live in Tucson, AZ We have a 1980 CJ-7 with a spring
over lift
detroit locker and solid axles in the rear, upgaded axles and a
tru-trac in the front and 33x12.50 MCII. We have a group of friends we
go four wheeling with and we always go the same places charleaus gap,
chivo Falls, Rice peak. Well I said we need to find new places around
tucson or nearby to go. So they put me in charge of coming up with new
places to go. Does anybody know of other trails besides the above
mentioned in or around Tucson. We are planning on going to the jamboree
up in Florence in October to try out those trails, we got to see a taste
of them at the ARCA in March. They would prefer the new places being
fairly challenging I dont care as long as it is someplace new. Has
anyone heard of the sutherland trail or tequila tank??

Any help would be appreciated.

Thx Judy

As I recall...Chiva is a class 3+. I would suggest some lift and at least a
l/s rear. It might be too much for an open diff vehicle.

The Sutherland trail is a class 4...toward the end of it. It's a one way
trail (you have to turn back at the wilderness boundary). It used to go all
the way to Mt. Lemon.TimN showed it to me...it's a challenge. If you do it,
be very careful on one of the last obstacles. You'll hit a ledge going up a
hill to a switch back. Up from the turn to the switchback it another ledge.
Roll over here is a possibility, and it's a long way down to the bottom of
the canyon.

The trail head is just east if Catalina S.P. You could likely find it on a
quad or FS map.
