View Full Version : High Oil Pressure...

I noticed yesterday that the gauge was up around 80, almost all the way at the top of the needle sweep. Funny thing is that when the engine is not running, but the key is turned to the on position the gauge stays at 80. I did the gauge check by holding down the odometer button when turning the ignition and the oil pressure gauge cycled through its test like normal.
Based on this, I have come to the conclusion that I think that I may possibly have a bad oil pressure sending unit.
However, just from my own curiosity, what damage could happen to the engine if I did indeed have high oil pressure? Seals I suppose could blow out, but I don't know if there are any other implications.
Whadyallthink?

obviousely gauge or sender is bad. In all probability the sender is bad or you have a loose connection. the "odd" feature of the newer sending units (including your fuel gauge) is that, although they do not work with reverse polarity, they work "backwards": if you disconnect the wire, the gauge pegs "high".
I first encountered this phoenomonon on (say that 3 times fast) my 88 grand wagoneer. first it happened to my oil pressure gauge ( because gauges used to peg high when grounede, thought it was a short; disconnected wire all the way back to firewall and it stayed peged so I installed manual gauge). Later my fuel gauge peged high even when empty; removed wire and remained high; I replaced sender and worked perfect (lightbulb: oil gauge workes same way... replaced sender and works great)
   another lightbulb: factory TSB says that connector on back of dash goes bad due to build up of corrosion (all gauges will soon fail :happened to "my" 98... cleaned connection and all works good now
does your airbag light stay on (another indication of corrosion problem)

Nope... all other gauges function properly.
It kinda makes sense why they would have the gauge peg on the high side if there was a loose connection or a bad sending unit. If I were driving along and all of the sudden my oil pressure went to zero, I would probably be very worried, and stop driving the car immediately. However, when I noticed that the oil pressure was pegged on the high side, I was somewhat worried, but I also though to myself "well at least it has oil pressure, even if it is too much."

I don't see an oil skid, did you possibly hit the oil pan? I noticed I hit mine and my oil pressure reads higher. Might be worth a look.

Nope... No oil skid... Checked the oil pan though.. still good as new.
