I am having trouble with the fan for the heating/a-c in the Jeep. It started about 6 months ago when I was still using the a-c. The second highest setting on my fan speed went out. That didn't bother me so much because I am usually running it at full blast or on the slowest speed once I am comfortable. Now none of the speed settings work. The heater core and everything a-c still work, but my fan won't blow. I guess you could say I am running my heater in "Natural Circulation" mode. (For all the ex-Navy Nukes) If anyone has any insight as to bring my fan back to life, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

99.98247% probability it is your switch (variable speed switch contacts failed)
try removing switch / wire set (not thoroughly familiar with TJ wiring, but they all seem to work on same premise), jump from hot (usually red wire) to any of the variable speed outputs (just not the black one, as this is commonly ground) to see what reaction you get (if it starts smoking and trigers a thermoneuclear reaction, you might have a problem)

is it still under warranty?

I had my AC/Heat controller, fan controller and associated wiring harnesses on my TJ replaced at least 3 times. It would loose some speeds on the fan and then after a while no fan setting would work. Lucky for me I had the extended warranty, because it was cheap for the dealer to fix it.
I will attach this warning, one time it went into melt down mode and the proper fuses were installed. So you might want to consider the possiblity this could happen to yours and not run any of the HVAC until it is fixed.

I wish I could tell you more specifically what happened, but I think it is a TJ thing. There are posts all over JU about this problem (sort of like the 4.0l exhaust manifolds). I think some people have by passed the factory stuff.

I have the same problem on my 2001... only the low and high settings work at the specific knob positions. I have found that the other settings (med-low and med-high) work if you move the knob slowly between the indents on the knob. Sometimes it will stay about half way between the two settings and the fan will operate.

I have read all over that this is a very common problem with TJs. I intend to replace the fan switch, but it sounds like it is a defect from the factory.

Yeah, I have the same problem, but mine is just busted knobs on the speed control and the vent position control. Just been too lazy to go get new knobs from the dealer. By the way anyone know what they run?

1BLKJP: busted knobs on the speed control and the vent position control

As far as your control knobs go, I busted my vent position knob. I am not sure on the speed control, but the vent position knob has enough clearence for a small glob of epoxy. I haven't had any problems with mine and it's going on a year and a half. There are also a couple of Jeep junk yards. They shouldn't charge more than $5.00 or so, but don't quote me on that.

Thank all of you for your technical input. I think I will try to rebuild/tear-up my current switch. I didn't know that this was such a common problem. Thanks again!
