Well, I had to make the best of being a Dad and finding something in the right price range. It took awhile but I finally found it.
I picked me up a 1999 F-250 this week w/ the powerstroke diesel. It has the Lariet interior and all the good stuff.
:D
I'm really happy with it and the ower before me already had the tranny done up so I'm good for a while.
Here is a photo of the beast.
Now I just need a trailer and I'll be set.

That's a nice rig.

LOL, about the tranny. You already talked to someone that mentioned the same thing to me, I actually had a couple of people mention it to me though. I hope the PO had it done good.

Congratulations Jon, thats a good looking tow rig. Of course now that you are in the DIESEL tow rig group you get to join in on all of the joking back and forth about which one is better, faster, has a better engine design, and so on!!! So learn up on that baby, you will need to fit in with the ribbing but just to get you started, and maybe Woody will help me or hackle will help YOU..........:)

1) Remember, REAL diesels dont need GLOW PLUGS.
2) Power CHOKE motors might be cool if they could SMOKE
3)REAL diesels dont need coolant tabs to prevent cavitation
4)What happend to the 2 extra main bearings?? (The Cummins has 8 and the PS has 6)
5)Do you know what "wet sleeve" means?? I thought not, you have an automotive based diesel engine.

These should get you started....:) All in good fun though!!! It really is a nice rig jon.........You might check the TDR....There have been people who put a B5.9 Cummins in their ferd....:)

Ok I will stop.....at least its not a GAS engine like JamesT's tow rig..... :D

Congrats Jon, VERY NICE TRUCK, and welcome to the family. Flexy has a little ford envy but thats ok.

Here's a few Ford Truck forums I've found very helpful. Check em out!

and remember, It's much better to be stroked than rammed!

Nice Rig Jon. I thought I would rather have a 2 wheel drive tow rig until last weekend. I was very glad I had 4 wheel drive in all the snow we were in.
You will enjoy being able to trailer the rig to and from the trail. You can now also bring a lot more stuff when you go camping.
As far as web pages I learned a lot off the diesel stop.com site
The Ford and Dodge stuff is fun to kid about. The bottom line is both trucks haul butt. The Dodge has a nice engine unfortunatly it comes with a Dodge truck wrapped around it :) Both vehicles have tranny problems mostly due to the torque put out by these engines and a heavy foot.
Enjoy

.....at least its not a GAS engine like JamesT's tow rig..... :D

That might have to change if I move to Flag, also the 2 wheel drive needs to go away if I move. For now it does just fine and I owe too much to get rid of it.

Jon, You need to ask Joe, in 1999 which truck had more HP & TQ? & Does your tow rig really need to look like a streched limo to get all the benefits of the diesel power? & Do wet sleeves really matter since the burn temperature of diesel is so much lower than gasoline?

I am jellous, although I think it looks a bit higher than I think I could get my wife to buy into it.

Thanks for all the comments on the rig. I think it is a little to high also but my wife liked it !!!!! Thats is cool. I wanted to get the dodge but I really wanted full four doors and the room in the cab. I got a 2 year old and another on the way so I wanted the four door. ( Oh God I never thought I would say that!!!!)
I enjoy the truck a lot and look forward to hooking up and go wheeling.
Thanks for all the info guys.
Maybe we should have a tow rig section on the BBS ???? :D :D

Looks nice man! My next tow rig will be a Cummins. Now have a 2001 Dodge 4x4 2500 V10. It does great hauling my Jeep but GAS milage to Moab is about 8 mpg!

New trailers are about $100 a foot. I just couldnt find a used one I liked.

Got the first oil and fuel filter change out of the way today. That way I know for sure at least that stuff is good to go.
Man 15 quarts   of Rotella 15-40 takes awhile to put in when 7 of it is in quarts because wally world only had 2 gallons left.
Ohhh well at least that is done.
I waited until I ate to do the fuel filter as to not mess up my BBQ turkey. :D :D

 8 mpg??? WOW. That vee-10 sure likes the petrol huh?? When we went to Johnson Valley a few weeks ago, I think between the 2 cummins and the powerstroke we all avg about 14-14.5 mpg @ 75mph. Make the jump, you will never go back to towing with gas...:)

James, umm I think you had better check that. In 99 the ram was available with the HO Cummins. That motor was rated @ 305HP and 525 TQ. As for the burn temps, Mr engineer ( :D ) they are going to be LOWER under a no load situation. BUT, under a fully loaded situation, the diesel burns quite hotter.

Now wait a second:

Dodge a whopping 245HP & 460lb-ft torque

and they are not under a real load all that much, even city driving.

Thats the "ETE" motor not the "ETH" (HO) Motor. :D AND that write up talks about the 98 which is the ETE motor...you had quoted the 99 ;)
