Hi Tom, Where did you pick those up? I could really use a set on my old M38A1. They are much more fitting than the $5 cheapies that I have in it now.

Thanks,

Bill A.

That's the same place that I found them, KASCAR. I emailed them and someone came back with prices for me. I don't know what they are talking about in that article about LED lights. I don't see them on Kascar's web site. I like the look of the regular ones better anyways. Here's the contact info: Kascar, LLC (864) 422-0370 www.kascar.com
Part numbers:
Tail light - 11614157
Buckets - 5575595

They really look nice! and being recessed they are well protected.

Question: I notice that you covered up your lic plate in the pics. I also notice that almost everybody does same, but I am at a loss as to why. I don't cover mine up in my shots because I see not need to, where is my thinking on this?? Anyone?

There are countless PUBLIC websites that one can use to locate the registered address of a vehicle IF you have the license plate number. They are just being cautious (and justifiably so)

agreed, if you have the tools...round cuts are harder without a torch.

I suppose it's a good idea to blank it out, I only did it to be a smart *** though :D

Don, you probably recognize those. They're the same as on every 5 ton, hummer, M1 abrahms, and just about everything else besides a CUC-V. Great lights!

Yeah, but come on...I could get plate #'s off anything driving down the road. Some people are just more of the conspiracy theorist type I guess. It'd be like not wanting to surf the web because you were afraid you were going to get a virus everytime you log on, or will have your identity stolen as soon as you do.

Tom, yes I do! Having said that how about a little triva question. If one will notice, there are 3 light sources. The tail light, a back up light and a little little light just below those.

What are they? [pat on the back for being a smart guy]

And, why do they NOT work as intended? [pat on the back and a beer for being a REALLY smart guy]

Alright Don,
I'm game, since Michael Jackson was found not guilty and you still owe me a beer for the Gerry can fiasco on the ROF (Dr. Rock).
Being a non-military veteran, I can only guess that they don't work as intended because you aren't running a 24 volt 'blackout' lighting system and those other lights would be the afore mentioned 'blackout' lights.
This was only a guess. I repeat, only a guess, of the answer to the Pryor question proposing system. Had this been an answer based in real world knowledge, it would have been followed by directions to your local watering hole.....
Can you tell its been a busy day in the office? :D

Huck, nice try on the 24 volt system, but alas not the answer. I will give you a hint on the "not working as intended". This is based upon "functionality" of the lights themselves rather than a technical issue such as voltage, size of bulb, color of lens etc.

They were originally used as convoy lights so people wouldn't run into each other while "blacked out". What's it for now?

Tom Schenk
06-13-2005, 06:18 PM
I'm afraid I don't know the shortcomings of the blackout lights. I rode a pair of Danners everywhere in the Marines. We didn't have too many problems that way, except when the chem light batteries would go dead. ;)

Your correct and getting as warm as warm can be. BUT they never functioned correctly [as designed] and that is the magic answer I am seeking. Hint: Look closely at the pics above and look at the blackout light itself. Notice anything?

Don't know what the right answer is but at Ft.Leonard Wood in the Corps learning to drive at Motor Transport one of the first things you learn pretty quick is that the parking lights do not work when set in blackout mode and the horn is turned off as well. It can make for some tense moments in the dark and the blackout tailights are bright enough to suntan by when wearing 7Ds.

SavageSun4x4
06-13-2005, 08:51 PM
And the answer is....If you look at the blackout lights there is a "cats eye" in there and on older models there was TWO. The thinking, or in this case the testing told them that the two cats eyes bacame one if you got further than 25 feet away, closer than that and you could see two them.

Problem was in the testing procedures. Seems like all the guys they tested this on, you got it, had 20-20 vision. Add to that the differences in how folks see at night, even those with 20-20 and what you had was a great idea, that cost a lot of money and was poorly tested. The blackout lights failed to meet the intended functionality.

There are aftermarket lights that cost $69.95 and the taillight buckets are $18.00. With shipping and handling you are looking at 194.81.

That's pretty close to what they cost me. There is a lot more to these lights then a plastic LED and a rubber grommet. There are dummer things one can waste money on (chrome). These can also be found at surplus auctions. Keep an eye out:

Tom, let me get this straight...You PAID almost $200 EACH for these, so this mod cost right at $400 bucks??

They do look good.

All I can say is "its your Jeep, your money, your pride of ride and if it makes you happy, then so be it'.

Wheeew, had me a bit worried there for a bit. $196 is not cheap, but still its a good enough deal if you like the style. I think they look great myself and not sure I would go $196 but I could spend some ducats on the look...:)

Nice look on the Jeep. Have a set on my H1 hummer. The only thing to think about is that you remove the rear side markers. Some DPS officer might give you some heat about it.

Also this is a good time to add CJ hinges to your TJ tailgate. You can notch the buckets to fit around TJ hinges but measure carefully; there is not much room for error. And do the passenger side first :)

I'll keep the TJ gate hinges. Have a custom paint and dont want to change to much.

Tom Schenk

Yeah I saw that at 4Wheelers but thought it was rattle can ;) :D

I would suggest relacing the lamps before you install the lights as the ones included suck at best. Mine burned out quickly. Also a little bit of silicone on the lens gasket will help keep the lens from fogging after a pressure wash. Also also, the newer TJ's have some sort of emissions trickery inside the rear passanger corner that will need to be relocated IIRC.
