I haven't posted anything fab related in awhile and did a quick project yesterday morning, so I thought I'd post it up. This YJ is stretched and boxed in front, so your typical "bolt on" winch plate won't work...or at least won't bolt on. In addition, I wanted a little more "beef" to my winch plate as I feel typical Warn, etc. plates are honestly marginal at best in materials.
For this mount, I used .250 plate...that should do the trick.:laugh2: I started by cutting all my pieces...small project so didn't even use a plasma, just cutoff wheels on a 4.5" grinder. Used a flap disc to clean the edges and used a simple paper template to mark all the holes.
Base plate...

I had to "notch" the stock front crossmember in order to reach the front winch mounting holes...I could have cut it off as it's obviously unnecessary with the new crossmember added during the stretch...but I suppose it can't hurt to retain it...

All the cut pieces lined up along with my Rockstomper fairlead...will be running Amsteel Blue synthetic of course...

Started to "burn it in"...looking more for strength than looks on these welds obviously:stooge_larry:...

Time to mount my new Warn M8000...not the blingest winch on the market, but tough to beat "bang for the buck" for sure...

All told, I have about 3 hours total including mounting the winch in the project and virtually no money (except the winch of course) since it was all built out of "scrap steel" I had laying around. It's probably twice as strong as a "store bought" winch plate...which typically run in the $75-100 price range from what I've seen. Just wanted to post up an easy alternative for someone with a little time and ability. Obviously I still need to pull the cable off (let me know if anyone needs new cable) and spool my synthetic.

Looks great! Only ? is how will you get to your steering box if you need to adjust it?

x2 on the steering box. I weld up my own winch plate as well and had to drill a hole after the fact for the steering box adjustment. I only need a 1/2in hole and I have already needed it a few times.

I don't think he will own the Jeep long enough to need to work on the box. It will be the next owners problem.

With Mike's small tool he has no issue at all reaching the tightest of spots with no issue at all.

For the "shortbus crew"...winch plate does NOT go all the way to the grill...as the frame ends have been lengthened (pretty sure I mentioned something about "modified frame" in the first post)...in addition, steering box is neither stock (PSC) or in stock location. I truly appreciate all of the concern from the peanut gallery, but "this ain't my first rodeo"!:laugh2::laugh2::laugh2: I'll drill a hole if it makes you ********s happy, but I have zero issues getting to it without a hole.:smug:
