As most of you have seen by some of my posts, I've been tearing down a 1979 304 cu. in. with the hopeful intentions of rebuilding it. (one day I'm gonna part it out the next I'm gonna keep it and build it). Anyhow, wanted to pull the timing cover and check the timing chain, gears, oil pump, cover etc. Got to the point where I needed a puller to remove the crankshaft vibration damper. Figured I'd run over to Auto Zone to see if they had one, the store close to my house did not. Returned and found my "HELPER" had used a regular puller on the outside edge of the vibration damper. He seperated the two parts. I have pictures showing the exact line up (I was taking step by step pix in case of a write up). There is a rubber "gasket" (for lack of a better word) between the two parts. Any idea how to put the two pieces back together correctly?

TIA,

Qman

that thing is press fit on there unless you have a Press i don't think you will be able to press them together i am not sure if it is even Possible. I noticed mine was Kinda Wobbling after i replaced the belt and was checking the timing when i took it off it came apart That rubber gets old and Dry and i would say on 1979 304 it is probably Original and The rubber is probably pretty old. Looks like a trip to the Stealership is in your future.

I would check out jegs ( jegs.com ) or jcwhitney before going to a stealership
Those dampers are balanced and once you break em they are no good any more. good luck
