My original post regarding this engine is below. This morning I pulled the #1 piston just to check things out. I don't have any scarring in the cylinder walls. It does not appear to have any damage to the crank surface. No play in the wrist pins. I pulled one lifter and don't see any scarring or anything significant. Anything else I should be looking at? No bent push rods. Info on valves etc would be appreciated. What I should be seeing etc. Don't want to trash this thing if it is a viable project.
TIA,
Jim
Hi all,
Some of y'all may remember I was picking up a 304 cu. in. engine in California while on a break. Anyhow the engine is out of a 1979 Jeep, 1978 date code. Tore it down today. top end full of oil sludge. Looks like it hasn't had an oil change in 10 years. :( Looks like the engine has been run hot and hard. Appears to have some copper plating on rod areas(although thats a refrigeration techs diagnosis, yea , me!) where they connect to main crank. Some play front to back on main bearing area but nothing up and down. Long story short, don't feel like the engine is worth rebuilding, would take a lot more than I thought it would. Figure I can part it out, (exhaust manifolds, intake, blah blah, and get my money back.) Anyhow, I guess I'm just looking for confirmation of my diagnosis, etc. May be parting this doggie out soon.
TIA, :D
