View Full Version : Upgrading the rear Axle... Anyone know how much a TJ Dana 44 is worth?

I had a bit of a problem with the Dana 44 in my TJ. I ended up breaking the Ring and Pinion...
So now its time for an upgrade... I have ordered a Sunray Engineering Shaved 9" with 35 Spline axles, and in the end it will end up costing me about 4500-4700 bucks.
Since I would like to recoup some of my costs, I was wondering what would be a fair ballpark price for a TJ Dana 44 with an ARB carrier (no ring and pinion) and factory drum brakes. I figure that there are a lot of folks out there with Dana 35s that wouldn't mind upgrading, but I have no idea what a fair price range is for my setup.
Anyone that can provide input would be appreciated... Also if anyone knows anyone who would be interested in the axle in about 3 weeks please let me know. I would probably also be willing to part it out (housing, ARB carrier, Axle shafts, etc)

I might be potentially interested in the ARB alone if you decide to part it.

You can pick up a D44 out of the junkyard for around 200 to 300 bucks. Then you need to get the brackets for a TJ and locate them and weld it up so that adds to the price.
Pretty common axle and there is alot of them out there. It will be worth more to part it out.
You should be able to get good money for the ARB carrier, I would be intrested in the shafts and I may have a buddy intrested in the housing and brakes.
I don't know of any one who wants the ARB carrier. Let me know if your intrested in getting rid of the housing, with the brakes and the shafts.

Just a thought have you considered getting some D60's out of a junkyard and tabbing the axle and what not yourself you could save ALOT and have D60's front and rear!
Just my thought's don't mean much though.

PJ, Jon,
Well it looks like one person may be interested in the ARB and one person may be interested in the housing assembly. I wouldn't be able to part with either for about 3 weeks when my new axle arrives, but if you would like to send me a PM in the mean time with an offer that would be okay.
Jon, I always appreciate some advice. I considered going the Junkyard Dana 60 route but since the Jeep is my daily driver, and I am in fairly immediate need of the complete setup soon, I don't think that I could spend the time looking for the right Dana 60 and then having all of the work done on it.
The company that is building my axle, Sunray Engineering seems to build some really good stuff for less than Dynarip or Currie. I have a friend out in Texas that has their axles under a YJ with 42's and I have seen him really beat the heck out the axles (his gas pedal only has two settings on and off) including jumping 4 wheels in the air and landing really hard while the engine is bouncing off of the rev limiter and the axles didn't break a sweat. In addition, the 9" setup is lighter than a Dana 60 or even a Dana 44, and has more ground clearance than even a ProRock60. Check out this link (http://www.sunrayengineering.com/compare.html) . So that is why I decided to go that route.
