Found this in a local want ad...
87 Wagoneer, Limited Edition Woody, Excellent Condition, Automatic Transmission 4X4 4WD roof rack, pl/pw, AC, full-size spare, car phone, 85,000 miles on original engine, many extras.
Sounds like a good deal considering the pristine shape the owner said it's in (haven't seen it yet but going to look tonight).
Is the 87 the year they came with stock D44's? What other things, good/bad about this year? TIA

You're welcome to come along with me on an advisory basis, if you like :) So what about the running gear? Any info on what it likely contains (assuming it's all stock)?

Matt -
I recently picked up an 87 XJ 4.0L (but not the Wagoneer package) for my nephew fairly cheap. It came with the D44 (with LSD), but also has the factory towing package. I think that is what you need to find for the D44, otherwise it will be a D35 in that model year.
If this one has the 4.0L engine, check for signs of overheating in its lifetime - the pre-92 (91?) XJs with the 4.0L are notorious for overheating, having a closed coolant system that is nearly impossible to get all of the air out of. I upgraded mine with a 92-style open system radiator (getting rid of the pressurized coolant bottle) for about $250 total. By the time we're done getting this XJ up to par, I guess we're going to be in it for about $750 or so above the price of sale (still needs a head job, probable TPS/CPS/MAP sensor replacements, vacuum leak chasing, possible new injectors - already did the radiator, new alternator/battery, water pump, a few other odds and ends).
