Hi all --
After a few months of work, I have completed (ok nearly completed) my
ScoutII axle swap on my CJ5. It cost WAY too much, but should be worth
it. I took it for a test spin around the neighborhood for the first
time in a few months and MAN is it different. Only thing left is
making shock mounts, and I'm DONE!
Anyway, I threw some pics up on my webserver for those of you that

Hello all
David O'Boyle and I made it back safely from the People's Republic of
Kalifornia early this morning. At the moment I'm running on 5 hours of
sleep after 18 hours of driving in the J-10 with the 'new' Cherokee on a tow
dolly behind it, so I'm not going to do a full trip report until tomorrow.
I did get the Cherokee fired up today and drove it off the dolly and into
the driveway.........an interesting experience since I live on a hill and
the Chero has no brakes. :-)
More to come after I get some sleep.........................

btw.......Pam is "pleased" with it -- reserving the 'like it' or 'hate it'

I ordered my lift from kRusty, and I finally got half of it a week late. A
few days later, I got the other half. I bought the lift specifically so I
would have it for my yearly wheeling trip to southern california, and
although I ordered it about 3 weeks in advance, it was a pretty tight
squeeze. I realized that I didn't have the sway bar disconnects I bought,
and after waiting a few days for another package I called him. He readily
admitted he flat out forgot them. He said he would send them ASAP. After
they were a few days late, I called. He said he had sent them a few days
earlier. After some more time passed, I called again. He tried to sound
shocked, and blamed UPS. After calling him on several occasions and sending
him nasty emails every day, he said he would build another set and send them
out ASAP. He blamed the delay in geting back to me on, do I need to even
say... UPS? He said it took a week to track a package through them. I told
him I wouldn't pay him a dime for shipping since he screwed up, and he
seemed
pretty receptive of the idea. Although hideously late, I finally got them.
I was, however, quite disappointed at the quality of the product. For $50
he
considers disconnects to be 2 bars welded together and rattle-can painted
with instructions on how to fabricate the other half of the product. Now
that's some quality stuff, eh?. I decided to spare myself the UPS stories
and just quietly never order from him again. That's my first impression of
kRusty's Off-Road, and being such a great impression I'll have to say it's
also going to be my last. Just thought I would share, and hopefully it'll
keep one of you from getting screwed.

the No-Slip performs. It was an easy install even with the carrier

I don't know about that price. How mechanically inclined are you and your son?
$6,800 would go a long way in building up a vehicle that was bone stock with the
same mileage. It does have a few things going for it, namely the Turbo400 tranny
and the 304. But look at for that Quadra-Trac. There are some things about
having that option that change the rear end or something. I think the pumpkin is
offset to one side with this option. This reduces the number of spare parts and
therefore increases the price for replacement parts for the rear. Check out
www.off-road.com and head to their Jeep technical section. In there there are
some writeups on the t-case and such. Might be good info for you. But the rest
sounds pretty solid. BUT.......$6,800 seems like a lot to me. IMHO

Subject: Re: CJ SOA done!
Ok, here's the scoop:
I haven't driven it except around the neighborhood (2nd gear tops)
because it's got no shocks. I'll keep you guys posted on how it worked
out once I get a better feel for it. My first impressions are that the
YJ springs should be perfect for the 'Screamin Chicken' because it's so
light.
The axles are Dana44s out of a 1979 ScoutII. They are about 3" wider
than Jeep widetracks (FS Cherokee/Wagoneer) so they are about 59"
flange to flange at the rear. The YJ springs worked out pretty well.
If stock 5 leaf YJ packs are used, they tend to invert right away, so I
acquired a second set of YJ packs (so I had four 5 leaf and four 4 leaf
packs). I took the main leaf from the 4 leaf packs and cut the ends
off, using those leaves as full length AALs. It works great and should
keep the axle wrap down a little. I'll let you guys know how bad axle
wrap is once I can drive it more.
Steering linkage will be left under knuckle for now, but if it has
horrible road handling I will have to fab up a knuckle-over solution.
Todd McCullen made my tie-rod and drag-link out of CrMo sleeved 120wall.
The rear driveshaft is a Gloeco CV high angle rockcrawler shaft. I'm
waiting to have a front driveshaft built until I need it. I'll have
them build my front one as well.
The only things left to get it on the trail are shocks, shock hoops,
and front driveshaft ... oh, and proabably a tow vehicle and trailer :)

I just found out from Rubicon Express
(916-858-8575)that there will be an applicable 10%
discount on the parts if you are a current member of
any 4x4 Clubs. Since I am planning to purchase a 4.5"
lift kit from them and install it myself on my '94 ZJ,
a 10% off will definitely help the savings.
Therefore, Len, are you the one that is a currently
the chairperson for this club or know someone else is,
please let me know, ASAP. I can be reached at
480-804-3461 (work) or 623-492-9780 (home) so I get
this info. to RE as part of the verification that I am
a current member from AZVJC. There is a form that
need to be filled out and faxed back to them for
processing.
Thanks a million,

If your email software supports filters, you can have it filter the
individual emails and place them in a separate folder. This way,
you kind of get two of the options described below at the same time:
individual emails and full-text digest. You can read the individual
emails as they come in or you can wait to the end of the day to read
them all. In either case, they don't clutter up you normal in-box so
you don't have to see them until you want to.
Caveat: With Netscape, this seems to work only when I have Netscape
running. This works for me since I keep it running all day
here at work. For those who have to fire up the PC (or Mac)
at home once a day, there may be little advantage.

Who owns the brown CJ "renegade" with tha azvjc stickers that is parked at the house on the corner of 33rd ave & union hills? I live around the corner and have seen it parked in the driveway the past couple days. I am also interested in what those guys build who live there. I know they do a lot of landcruiser buildups. Thanks

Subject: Trail Report -FR42/FR413
Saturday, March 25, 2000. FR42 and FR413 photos here:
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=22547&a=3234463
Twelve Jeeps including 3 Cherokees left CareFree at 9AM headed for Bartlett Lake. We aired down at the Pay Station and then headed out to the trail. This was a good cross section of Jeeps, From Andy's 4" lift to several 3" lifts and a few stock jeeps as well, including an almost new Blue 2 door Cherokee. We took the direct route and bypassed the dunes - heading right for the tougher hills and moguls. The amazing thing was that no strapping was required. Some had to make a couple of stabs at the short little hill that caused us so much trouble on the last FR42 run, but everyone made it, even a couple of club newbies. Nice job, everyone. Great driving!
We stopped for lunch near the end of Indian Springs Wash and played on the hills for a while. After lunch most of us headed back out Bartlett Dam Road to connect with FR413, part of the Great Western Trail. About a mile in we came across a very long and intimidating uphill off to the right. About 1/2 of the remaining Jeeps gave it a try and were rewarded with a spectacular view at the top. The hill wasn't as bad as it looked - everyone who tried made it. We then continued on FR413 through some beautiful canyons with sheer cliffs and soft sand. We were able to run at about 25 mph much of the way, stopping a few times to test out some side trails. Where FR413 meets FR20 we tried our hand at some rock climbing. There seems to be some really challenging spots that required more lift and skids than most of us had. Peter Wirch got the furthest but he also got stopped a few times when he was concerned about the bumping and scraping sounds from underneath. This is an area that some of the big boys really should try - Doug, Scott, Bill, etc. It is mostly composite so you get a great grip but the ledges are more than a 3"lift can handle.
The next day Tricia and I went out early (7:30AM) and hooked up with FR404, right about where FR20 and FR413 meet. This is probably more of an ATV trail - it winds through a canyon/wash barely the width of a Jeep for about 2 miles. I don't know what we would have done if we had met someone coming the other way. It would not have been possible to turn or back up. We finally broke into the open and continued on about 5 more miles. The trail got rocky (basketball size) and narrower. We met several ATV's up there but none knew where the trail ended up. I headed back without finding the end and fortunately didn't meet anyone coming up. (Whew!) See the two box canyon photos at the end of the PhotoPoint site above.
Thanks all for a great Saturday run.

Hi Len & all AZVJC members,
I just found out from Rubicon Express
There is a form that
need to be filled out and faxed back to them for
processing.
Thanks a million,
Tom
