Subject: VIN breakdown on the Ebay Cherokee
I just got the VIN from the soon-to-be previous owner of the Ebay
Cherokee:
J7F18MC107503
As was suspected by the members of the FSJ list, it isn't really a '71.
J = Jeep
7 = 1977 model year
F = 3 speed manual (T-15A)
18 = Model 18 (Cherokee, 4-door station wagon)
M = GVW 6025 lbs
C = 258ci I6, 2 bbl carb (Carter BBD)
107503 = 6-digit sequential serial number
The T-15A means it has the D-20 transfer case.
D-44 axles front and rear, gear ratios should be 3.54 (standard) or
4.09 (optional). In 1977, Trac-Lok was available with the 3.54 ratio
only (at least, according to Jeep), although if this FSJ has it, by
now it probably needs rebuilding.
I'm driving out to Santa Barbara to get it this weekend. If anybody else is
on I-10 wave as you go by!

Sounds like we have a few interested in doing this. Starting out near
Horseshoe Dam and running FR42 backwards (South) and then around Bartlett
to the Log Corrall trail ending up at SR87 North of 4Peaks Road. Probably
an all day affair. Anyone wanting could drop off at Bartlett for a 1/2 day
run.
Andy - could I talk you into co-leading this with me since you probably
know the directions best?
Let's meet Saturday at the shopping Center at Cave Creek and Scottsdale
Road at about 8:45 for a 9AM start. I think it has an ABCO super market.
Please let me know if you are interested with a quick reply.

John,
Sounds like a fun day. Count me in. I have the blue 2 door
(new)Cherokee, and it is stock except for disconnects on the front, and
I removed the rear swaybar. Do you think I'll have a problem?

Subject: Ever had One Of Those Days(Weeks)!!!!!!!
Hello Dave Oboyle,
Hey pard, just checking on progress with your lift???? I finally got the
rest of my parts from Rusty's Off-Road today. With my recent luck, I am not
surprised that my three day order only took a week and a half to get here.
Oh well, I guess it could be worse. I had my tires installed last
night-(32x11.50 MT's). They are a Cooper tire, and the tread is allot more
aggressive than the BFG's, but the price was the deciding factor. It was
about half the price. I am hoping to finish my lift tomorrow, with the help
of my son. He does most of my mechanical work on my jeep. Boy, I can not
believe the bad luck I have had lately on my jeep. Thursday, I had to
replace my alternator, Friday I had to replace my power steering pump,
Saturday I had to replace my bearing on my belt tension pulley, and if that
wasn't enough, On Monday I had to replace that stupid bracket assembly(bad
bearing)for the mechanical fan. The one that bolts on the left side of the
block, that also you bolt the a/c compressor to and the belt tension pulley.
I guess on the new models they are set up on the water pump, like on a
normal engine. GO FIGURE! Well, since I had it taken down that far, I
figured I might as well change out the water pump for the 30.00 that it cost
for a new one from Auto Zone. It had been a while anyway, and now I can rest
easy knowing that everything in front is new. Since I had already changed
out my rear/front main seals, oil pan gaskets and seals, along with my valve
cover gasket, new battery, new distributor, accel 8.8 wires, new accel power
coil, new electric fan, and last but not least, my new K&N air assembly, I
wonder if I just should have ordered a new engine and get it over with!!!!!
I was thinking a while back about trading the "Ghost" in for a new one, but
even though it has cost me a few bucks, it is allot cheaper than a car
payment every month. Now, with most of my recent improvements, and my
continuing good maintenence(which I try to do with all my vehicles), I am
hoping that my second home at the parts store will be having very few visits
in the near future. (Knock On Wood).
I hope your improvements are going better than mine. I would like to see
some pic's of your rig when you are finished. I will try to get some of
mine to you as soon as possible. Now it is time for my lockers and re-gear
experience. Hopefully I can get this done before Moab.
Sorry for the unload, I just had to tell someone about this unbelievable
cloud over my head lately. What is that saying: "When it rains, it pours?"
HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!
Keep Smiling,
Casper

Subject: Re: Ever had One Of Those Days(Weeks)!!!!!!!
I know how you feel man. Except my story is slightly different. It was
called a crappy mechanic. Of course it did push my to buying a new vehicle
which allowed me to go from hot rod to 4x4 ;) I still have the hot rod but
am going to sell it. Work killed all my over time (lost half my pay per
month cause of it) and I can't afford the hot rod and 4x4 both and since the
4x4 is financed and I am trying to build credit. well you know how that
goes ;) Thankfully I know I will get back on my feet around the middle of
April and hopefully will sell the hot rod in time for that new TerraFlex
suspension kit for hte XJ oh baby 4 coil suspension with a 6" lift. of
course till I replace those yucky stock tires it will look funny but who
cares right ;)
I am hoping to do Moab next year. if everything goes good I will have the
lift with the body armor and tires. Don't know about the diff's yet. But I
will be working on it.
Now for some questions. I am looking at the 4x4 fabrications skid plates
and nerf bars (I like the double tube design and the way it looks). Does
anyone have any feelings on these products or maybe a better suggestion? I
really want to stick with the double tube style side bars as they give me
something on the bottom to slide on and protect the rockers (well I still
have 1 not crushed <snicker>). For the skid plates I know a stock Cherokee
with the up country comes with 3 but one of those goes in front of the front
axle. With the lift will that skid plate be useless or should I look at
maybe making a pre-runner style skid plate to go there and maybe mount to
the uni frame to help protect the steering components from as much potential
damage as possible. I do live in the desert so the pre-runner style will
work perfectly for that but I know rock crawling will always show 1 side of
the steering as the front end flexes.
I am seriously thinking of tricking the XJ out but it will be a long process
(mainly money with some pestering of my mom since I had to get her to
co-sign on the loan) but here is what I am looking at going with. Tell me
what you all think.
Custom 4x4 Fabrications front and rear bumpers with all the options.
Front bumper: Shackles instead of hooks, brush gaurd that wraps around the
front lights, and a place for a winch.
Back bumper: spare tire carrier, hi-lift carrier, and possible a gerry can
carry
Skid plates for at least the transfer case/transmission and the gas tank.
Pumkin guards to help prevent damage to the diffs.
double tube rocker guards to help protect the bottom some (those pinch seems
are real vulnerable) and to protect the rocker panels.
Terraflex 6" 4 coil conversion kit due out in April/May of this year
BFG MTRs most likely going to stick with 31X10.50X15 as with the 6" 32's can
rub a bit to much.
Ramsey 9500 winch for the front
Reciever Hitch Winch Mount (that way if I am out by myself my mom can still
come get me I hope) with a Ramsey 9500 Winch on it.
4" x 6' x 6' carrieing rack on the roof with (yes I like lights) several
lights (6 front 6 rear for maximum 360 coverage for camping sites etc).
Plus as much gear as I can carry.
Air Compressor (for ARB lockers, load levelers in the rear <hey I do have
access to boats to tow>, and for airing up tires after a run)
Welder (I have experience with wire feed arc but am sure that will be to
wieldy what do you think?)
Thinking of changing the Diffs from 3.55 (stock) to 4.10 with ARB lockers
front and rear
I will probably keep the stock axles and once the axles break replace them
with Warn axles. Same thing with the auto-locking hubs. Once those break I
will get Warn Hubs installed.
Last thing I am going to do (cause I promised my mom I would do it last) is
install a snorkel for those watery depths of car washes (well that is why
you cross streams and stuff right? To wash off the dirt? <EG>)
I think that just about covers it. If anyone has any
suggestions/ideas/opinions on how to improve this setup please let me know.

Unless you have gobs of articulation and big, aggressive treads, open
diffs will probably have problems on FR42. But nothing a tow strap
won't solve assuming there's a vehicle that can do the towing.
On the other hand, I've been on FR42 after it rained and the trail
was packed down enough that there was good traction for all - even
those with open diffs made it without help.
I'd say if you not afraid - or too proud - to get strapped, go for it.
It's a good opportunity to find out where your vehicle's limits are
without much risk.
I can't speak for the log corral leg of the trip though.

Hey Rick,
FR42 was the first REAL trail I took after buying my TJ. When I took it, my
TJ was bone stock with open diffs, the only thing I had that was an extra
was the 30 series tires and a hi-lift jack. The point I'm trying to make
here, is that FR 42 is a great trail to try with a stock Jeep. Like Roger
said, you can always count on someone there to have a strap if you run into
difficulty.

Hey Jon
There is only one problem with the log corral trail is that when Andy and I
(Sharky, not Sparky hehehe) ran it we had to cross the river and then found
out that it was illegal due to eagle breading until June 1st.I have no idea
how we would get to Log Corral after trail fr42.

John you will have a good time at trail FR42..but I dont know if you will
like Log Corral, it gets pretty nasty for unlifted vehicles. It was the first
time I had to be strapped and it happened twice in there. My TJ has 31" tires

Hey Sharky,
When did you do log coral last? I remember trying that trail about a year
ago in my Nissan pickup and I ran into that same thing with the eagles nest.
Someone was stuck out in the river with a old style Landcruiser and we had
to pull him out. The park ranger came out there and told us that the trail
would only be closed during certain times of the year when the eagle was
nesting, I'm wondering if now is that certain time? As I remember, the trail
was pretty tame back then, but, a year can do a lot to a trail.

Hal,
I might be willing to lead the way - on Terminator that is. From what
I know, Predator is a body damage trail and I don't do that.
But we can do Lower Terminator, Upper Terminator or even Raw Deal. With
a small group of vehicles or with well-setup vehicles, we could possibly
do two or all three of these. Lower and Upper Terminator normally take
me and my buddies about 3 hours each. Raw Deal is less than an hour
unless you battle the optional upper end (ie. the true raw deal).
I'd need to know a date to determine if I can go. And I'll need a
starting time to determine how much we should try to do. Would you
be driving up from Tuscon on the selected Monday?

Gulp. I knew it was Sharky, I don't know what came over me.Maybe I was
thinking of "Our Gang" comedies.
Anyway, everyone that is going on FR42 on SATURDAY. I am going to check
with the Rangers tomorrow and if it is still closed we can always call it a
day at Bartlett Lake or optionally go down the other way. There is a trail
that leads to Tonto Verde where Dynamite ends that I am pretty sure goes
all the way through from Bartlett. I will check on that also. We'll have
fun any way we do it. It looks like there are about 10 Jeeps signed up so
far. I'll post another final announcement Friday afternoon when I arrive home.

Subject: VIN breakdown on the Ebay Cherokee
I just got the VIN from the soon-to-be previous owner of the Ebay
Cherokee:
J7F18MC107503
As was suspected by the members of the FSJ list, it isn't really a '71.
J = Jeep
7 = 1977 model year
F = 3 speed manual (T-15A)
18 = Model 18 (Cherokee, 4-door station wagon)
M = GVW 6025 lbs
C = 258ci I6, 2 bbl carb (Carter BBD)
107503 = 6-digit sequential serial number

Like Roger
said, you can always count on someone there to have a strap if you run into
difficulty.

Hey Sharky,
When did you do log coral last?

Brian,
Great shots! I'll have to run this trail next time!
I didn't realize it but you can send email postcards from photopoint. After all that time looking for a card for Carla Boucher I could have sent her a post card from one of the VJCers photopoint galleries instead! Doh!
Thanks!

Hey Arron
We ran it about 6 weeks ago. We thought that we were doing the right thing
until we crossed the river only to find another sign on the other side LOL

I have Dana 35c Rear Axle and a NP231 transfer case for sale. Both are in
good working condition. They came off of a 90YJ. If anyone is interested
just drop me an E-mail.
Also, I have front rotors for a Dana 30. (off the same 90YJ) I had them
turned about a month before I replaced them. (needed CJ rotors for an axle
mod)
Thanks,

Is there anyway this run could be done on Sunday? I was reminded this
evening, 'quite abdruptly I might add' hehehe that I have to go to a
wedding on saturday. When will people learn that weddings are for weekdays?
Anyway if there is anyway possible I would be for ever in the debt of the
club LOL...
Let me know if it can be done..if not have a great time. If nothing else,at
least when they ask if there is any reason they should not get married..I
will have a darn good reason! hehehe
thanks
