Subject: Re: Diff gear change question
Getting back to the original ? there are some manufactures of ring and
pinion
that make an extra-thick ring gear that will fit the smaller carrier,
so you
can reuse your Trac-Lok, not sure if you will find the ratio you are
after.
Also there are manufactures that make a spacer to move the ring gear
over,
this is another option that will let you resue your Trac-Lok.
Another option that might work for you is to buy an unloaded Trac-Lok
carrier
(3.92:1 and up) and reuse you Trac-Lok interanals(side gears, spider
gears, clutch packs and cross shaft).
Hope this gives you some options if you really want to have a Trac-Lok
diff.

OK, I have fallen prey to peer pressure. :-)
I ordered front and rear Detroit TrueTracs and 4:10 ring and pinions
(actually, the rear is a 4:09 - go figure) from Leon Rosser. They were
quite a bit lower than all others on the TrueTracs and the r&p prices
were pretty good too. They are having the rear TrueTrac drop shipped
from the manufacture.
I really hate this group. You really love spending my money! :-)
To Mike Stenson: Thanks for the info on the gears and carrier options
to keep what I have. I have decided just to replace the rear diff
before it wears out and I have to pay to replace it again later. Thanks

Subject: rant about local Jeep parts manufacturer
I have to share this with the group since I couldn't believe the phone call
I just finished.
This past weekend, I bought a product, manufactured by everGreen
Performance, a Scottsdale company, for my '98TJ. While installing it, I
found that they supplied 2 of the necessary spacer/bolt items required for
relocating a bracket. The parts list states there should be two each of
these items, which there was. The problem is that my '98TJ has 3 bolts that
hold down this bracket, so I was one spacer and bolt pair short.
So that I would not have a major problem with the throttle linkage bracket,
I stopped at the ACE hardware store to see about getting something to
temporarily fix the missing problem. For the total sum of $.55, I bought a
longer bolt and a nylon spacer and installed them in the 3rd mounting
location. OK, safe for now until I get the missing parts from the company.
I called them on Saturday and left voice mail requesting they call me Monday
at my house. (no call back) MISTAKE #1
I called them today from work and explained the problem. I fully expected
the customer service representative to give me a quickie "gee, we are sorry
about that Mr. Olson", get my mailing address, and send me the bolt and
spacer I needed. That would have been the most logical thing to do and
would foster good will to the customer, etc.
Noooooooooo way...........He is going to research the problem. He is going
to talk to the design engineer and determine why it is that I have 3 bolts
on my bracket and their kit is only supplying 2 of them. He hopes he will
be able to find an answer by the end of the day and he hopes he will be able
to call me back with an explanation. He made no promise about me ever
getting the missing hardware so I could finish my install using their
components instead of the temp stuff I got from ACE.
Am I missing something here or is this guy so anal retentive that he needs a
permit to get fresh breathing air?
This person is pissing me off for the most stupid reason. If it cost me
$.55 for the parts at retail, I would be willing to bet he could send them
to me, including shipping, for about that. Why he prefers to do it his way
is beyond me. With this guys talent, he could get a job at US West customer
non-service (that is an entirely different topic).
Thanks for letting me rant. I'll post the results should he ever call back.
If he doesn't, you can bet I will call him. I wouldn't miss this chance for
all the bolts and spacers in Scottsdale!

Darnit, you mean I bought tires? Just kidding...
From Leon Rossers's web site
Detroit Truetrac® is the only unit currently available to the
aftermarket featuring a gear-type limited slip design (no clutch or
friction plates to wear out). Designed for medium-duty 2 & 4WD
applications, this positive gear action provides a quiet, automatic
splitting of torque, without the steering problems asociated with other
traction diffs.

I received a number of responses about my track log posting for White Tanks
(thanks all).
I think I am safe in saying that a number of members have GPS receivers and
may or may not be getting much out of them, other than using it as a
glorified compass? (yes, they work well for that but can do so much more).
I've been GPSing for a number of years and am on my 3rd Garmin. My last PC
purchase was a laptop that was selected just for its ability to always ride
along in the TJ. I've acquired some software over the past year, such as
OziExplorer, Garmin MapSource, Delorme 3D-Topo, etc.
Anyway, what would be the interest factor (of you folks) for getting
together to hold an informal GPS demo, mapping software how to, USGS DRG CD
show and tell, track log exchange, whatever....etc.
If we could nail down a central location to hold it at, I could probably
furnish a high output LCD projector to handle the software display, do the
demo, etc. I wouldn't mind doing this for my fellow Jeepers (I work in a
training department at the nuclear power plant).
If you are wondering about GPS & PC technology and how it can enhance your
off-road travels, this would be the place to get your questions answered.
If interested, drop me a note.....or better yet, if interested, figure out
where we could hold a GPS get together (don't want to call it a meeting
because the VJC doesn't meet!). It needs to be indoors and obviously big
enough to handle whatever the number of people who decide to come. I am
thinking some kind of public room, maybe at a library, so something like
that? Stir it around and let me know what you come up with.

First off! What year Bronco do you have? If its an early model just sit

Putting Dana 44's up front, Ford 9" in the rear changing out the
transfer cases , putting in transmissions with lower 1st gears and
putting V-8's under the hood. An early model Bronco has all of these.
With a little work they can go where you want them to go. Just food for

Subject: Great Western Trail Draft Feasibility Study
All,
Please read the following concerning the Great Western Trail. This will
probably be our last shot at commenting on the report before it goes to
Congress. This is very important to all of us and deserves our
attention. Please take the time to read it and comment.
RB
March 2000
Outdoor Enthusiasts:
The Draft Great Western Trail Feasibility Study report is now available
for review and comment. The report is being prepared to provide
information regarding adding the Great Western Trail to the National
Trails System.
The complete report is also available for viewing at
http://www.northrim.net/sawtoothnf/
For consideration, your comments must be received by April 14, 2000.
Comments can be addressed to USDA Forest Service, Great Western Trail
Feasibility Study, 2647 Kimberly Road east, Twin Falls, ID 83301-7976.
For additional information or copies of the study, please write to the
address or telephone Roshanna Stone, Great Western Trail Study Leader,

This National Trails Study presents information on the feasibility and
desirability of adding the Great Western Trail to the National Trails
System.
The study concludes that the Great Western Trail is a nationally
significant trail that meets National Trails System Act requirements.
The study concludes that establishing a continuous trail is physically
feasible.
The study concludes that desirability of recognizing the trail is
dependent upon the level of community involvement and support
available. Also,
that adequate funding must be ensured at the time of designation of the
trail.
The study examines four alternatives for designation of the trail under
existing National Trails System categories. The study also examines two
alternatives under the proposed National Discovery Trail category.
Agencies and the public may comment during the 30-day draft review

Well if your talking about XJ's I would say the newer you get the better off
you are. They made some pretty nice changes in the 97+ models. If you want
to go a little cheaper I really like the 91-96, they fixed allot of little
things from the earlier years & my high output 4L is strong & hasn't given
me any trouble even with 140k on the odometer. Even the earlier years can be
good if you get the right one, avoid the 2.8 V6 the four cylinder is almost
as powerful and much more reliable also avoid the early (pre 91) ABS it has
caused many people large headaches. If at all possible get a 4.0L it's a
great engine.

If you're interested in Early Broncos (c'mon everybody, It's not like you're cheating on your JEEPs, it just may feel that way, trust me, it'll pass!) check out my co-pilot's web site. His name is Greg Banfield. He's at

First off! What year Bronco do you have? If its an early model just sit
down and think about this. What is everyone doing to there Jeeps?
Putting Dana 44's up front, Ford 9" in the rear changing out the
transfer cases , putting in transmissions with lower 1st gears and
putting V-8's under the hood. An early model Bronco has all of these.
With a little work they can go where you want them to go. Just food for
thought.

I confirmed that the front axle nuts on a TJ are "1 7/16" size - same as the

drive, so you'll need an 1/2 drive adapter, or a 3/4" ratchet.

Hope this gives you some options if you really want to have a Trac-Lok
diff.

quite a bit lower than all others on the TrueTracs and the r&p prices

Canyon, or just about anything. I have air in my tires and gas in my tank
and itching to get rid of both. Anyone have a plan or an idea??

Just food for
thought.

Hey, Andy or Sharky - Would it be possible to run FR42 backwards (I don't
mean in reverse, I mean starting from Horseshoe) and then when we get to
Bartlett continue out from there down to SR87 the way that you 2 went a
couple of weeks ago? That's the reverse of the way you went, if I recall.
How do you get from FR42 to the road that goes out the back way? That might
be a great all day run.

Subject: Great Western Trail Draft Feasibility Study
All,
Please read the following concerning the Great Western Trail. This will
probably be our last shot at commenting on the report before it goes to
Congress. This is very important to all of us and deserves our
attention. Please take the time to read it and comment.

Outdoor Enthusiasts:
The Draft Great Western Trail Feasibility Study report is now available
for review and comment. The report is being prepared to provide
information regarding adding the Great Western Trail to the National
Trails System.
The complete report is also available for viewing at

For consideration, your comments must be received by April 14, 2000.
Comments can be addressed to USDA Forest Service, Great Western Trail

Having always been a staunch supporter of primitive technology (map, compass,
starlight navigation, telepathic signaling, etc.) I never thought I would say
this, but I would be interested learning more the units.

He's at
http://syspac.com/~motoman/
I've been friends with him for about 9 years now, and we take turns in the passenger's seat of each other's ride. We're way into it and our wives are not..... I'm sure most of you can relate. Be Good. Later.

As someone mentioned before I would check into a stroker kit for the 4.0. I
believe Clifford Performance and HESCO both make one. On the jacobs
electronics tip, don't to it!! I put the omni magnum on my 4.0 and it was a
complete waste of time, no increase in mileage and it didn't feel like i had
more power either. I've heard the same story from a lot of people.

I confirmed that the front axle nuts on a TJ are "1 7/16" size - same as the
YJ solid hubs. Got my trail socket today. If you bust an axle u-joint on the
trail, your gonna want this socket. It's a pretty big one too - for a 3/4"
drive, so you'll need an 1/2 drive adapter, or a 3/4" ratchet.
