Subject: future get together
I received a number of responses about my track log posting for White Tanks
(thanks all).
I think I am safe in saying that a number of members have GPS receivers and
may or may not be getting much out of them, other than using it as a
glorified compass? (yes, they work well for that but can do so much more).
I've been GPSing for a number of years and am on my 3rd Garmin. My last PC
purchase was a laptop that was selected just for its ability to always ride
along in the TJ. I've acquired some software over the past year, such as
OziExplorer, Garmin MapSource, Delorme 3D-Topo, etc.
Anyway, what would be the interest factor (of you folks) for getting
together to hold an informal GPS demo, mapping software how to, USGS DRG CD
show and tell, track log exchange, whatever....etc.
If we could nail down a central location to hold it at, I could probably
furnish a high output LCD projector to handle the software display, do the
demo, etc. I wouldn't mind doing this for my fellow Jeepers (I work in a
training department at the nuclear power plant).
If you are wondering about GPS & PC technology and how it can enhance your
off-road travels, this would be the place to get your questions answered.
If interested, drop me a note.....or better yet, if interested, figure out
where we could hold a GPS get together (don't want to call it a meeting
because the VJC doesn't meet!). It needs to be indoors and obviously big
enough to handle whatever the number of people who decide to come. I am
thinking some kind of public room, maybe at a library, so something like
that? Stir it around and let me know what you come up with.

Last week a guy called here asking for Geoff because
he had some Scrambler questions and was
looking for some Saurday runs. Turns out he is
a minister! Yes! With a Jeep Scrambler!
When Geoff told me, I screamed do you know what this means?
"what?" He can marry Lenny and Pam!
So we will be in touch with him soon and see if he

Does anybody know what kind of mapping program opens a file with a .e00
extension? That Maricopa county map was 35meg compressed......actually a 60
meg file and has an extension of .e00. Will Ozi Explorer work with that
perhaps?

Yeah I can see what I can do about setting up a run. Just let me know when
would be a good time for all of you guys. Right now my days off are Friday
afternoons (I get out of college at noon) and Saturdays but if I have enough
fair warning I can take a sunday off also. My biggest problem is trying to
get at least 1 other person to go with me on some of the tougher area's as I
don't have a winch yet and well no armor yet either ;) But I am always more

Subject: new logo contest -- Wedding T-shirts!!
Hello all
It's been a while since our last logo contest, so here's another one for
ya'. We (Pam and I) need a custom logo made up for the t-shirts we are
going to wear at the wedding. It needs to include Jeeps, Arizona, and a
family of four....two adults, two kids.
We've talked about two jeeps in formal wedding attire (veil, tux, etc) with
people standing in them, or maybe something in a silhouette - two jeeps with
people in them on a ridge at sunset kind of thing.
Be creative! Just remember that we are a Full Size Jeep
family.........nothing against all the little ones, but it's what we've got.
:-)
Email me directly with your ideas at mailto:kermit@c...
and I'll post all of them on my photopoint site.
Thanks all!

Doug,
Tell me where you are going to meet, I will try to make it. I'll be coming
from Tucson.
I am anxious to try out the new modifications I did on my TJ this week end.
A while back, I put out an email asking for advice on doing a body lift on
my 97 TJ. Information from several sources told me that it couldn't be done
without screwing up the air conditioning. You and a couple of others
responded to my email and advised me to install Curie engine mounts to make
the body lift work. With a friend's help, I installed the engine mounts and
the body lift and it worked out just great. I was then able to installed my
Teraflex "Belly Up" flat skid plate, (which required the body lift).
Everything worked out so well, I got caried away and went down to Discount
Tire and had them put on a set of 35 inch Goodyear MTR's. I have a whole new
rig to try out now.
Thanks again for your help

We're looking for a few good jeeps - to help in fixing up an existing trail.
Below is a brief description of it. We'd like to do an overnight work party,
next week-end (March 25-26). Preferably, we're looking for Jeeps that are
well lifted, locked and have a winch. The scenery in this area is absolutely
stunning, and the trail has some pretty awesome obstacles in the last
portions of the trail - (class 4+) - with one point that may require a
winch - won't know for sure until we try it.
If your interested, shoot out a note, and we'll put it together. A small
party of Jeeps (5 or so) would be perfect.

This may sound like a real silly question to some of you, but is it really worth it to do the front? Are there any negative sides to doing this. Will it affect the steering at all?

They are correct. 3.92 and up on the Dana 44 requires a carrier replacement.. Since the Tracloc IS your current carrier you'll need to upgrade. I'd recommend either a Detroit Truetrac limited slip ($299@ Leon Rosser), or a Detroit locker ($459@ Macromotive.com).
The carrier cutoff for the D30 is 3.73 and up so you will be okay up front. Why not upgrade the open diff now to a Truetrac LSD for $299 ? Since you are removing the carriers to do the R&P setup the new locker or LSD install is essentially free. If you decide to add one later you have to pay installation all over again...its better to do it all now.
BTW, What is their phone number? I need to get my new gears and lockers installed in about a week.
Good Luck,

It allows upload/download of maps and waypoints from programs from companies like DeLorme and it also has internal maps that can be updated. It is easy to read, easy to use and has a definable display. For example you can show speed, altitude, LAT/LON, distance to nxt waypoint, compass, etc. They run about $350. You can get the Garmin III (no +) for about $100 less and about the only feature missing is the ability to update the built-in maps. I have the III and have not missed the update feature - roads just don't change that much.
Go to: http://www.garmin.com
and for the GPS III Plus go to: http://www.garmin.com/gpsIIIPlus.html

I offer this up as a "good-thing-to-know-for-the-future". The Model 20
carrier does not need to be swapped out when doing gear swaps up to (I
think) 4.56's. So the Model 20 carrier is good from 2.73's (whoa!! How
low can you go?) up to something like 4.56's. Just info........

A locker in the front as well as the back is a huge differance in traction, obsticles that used to cause me concern with just a rear locker get walked up now. I have lock-rites in both ends of my YJ and the only time I notice the front one is off-road, it causes the front to try and push through turns rather than turning when the angle I want. At first this was hard to get used to but after a while it was just something I learned to deal with a the results/benifits of dual lockers is worth a few 3-point turns in my book.I watched Tim Naylor basically walk up White Knuckle in Moab with dual lockers and I don't think he could have done it with just a rear one.

I figured for Tuesdays run we'd decide where to go when we get together that
morning and see how the different vehicles are set up. We have a few
options, if there are some smaller/stock vehicles that the owners don't want
to dent then we can start with a nice drive into Chimmney Rock, it's a
fairly easy trail but I've never been able to run the whole thing because I
can't find the exit. The next option is a reverse of the run we took Monday,
in through Italian Trap and up Three Feathers which I would rate it at
between a 3.5 and 4, (4.5 if you pick a bad line coming up The Chute or if
you want to try The Step, which is VERY tough in a short wheel based
vehicle). Or if we have a combination of vehicles, enough time and are able
to keep a good pace we might be able to do both runs, the smaller vehicles
can go in to Three Feathers the usual way after we get out of Chimmney Rock
and watch the possible damage to the others from the comfort of the rocks.
:-)
Let's meet at the ABCO at Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway about 9:15 AM on
Tuesday, I have to take my daughter to school at 9:00, and we can finalize
our plans there, for those that need directions to the meeting spot call me
at (520)750-8727 and I'll be more than happy to get you there.

One of the good things about the Detroit Truetrac is that it is gear driven and requires no special additives in the fluid. The Tracloc is clutch driven and will wear out long before the Truetrac. A limited slip in the front or the rear will be transparent on the street, unlike a locker which would take some getting used to. A limited slip is preferable to a locker if you ever drive in snow or ice.
To transfer torque to the wheel with the most traction you may sometimes need to tap the brakes to load it up. I think you'd be surprised at how much your offroad performance would improve if you had them front and rear.

Chris,
I put a Detroit TrueTrac in my D30 when I put the Detroit Locker in the rear. It makes a big difference on the trails. I don't notice any front end (and one should not) handling problems on the street. The TrueTrac pulls like a locker, IMHO. If you can afford it, I would opt for it. A California friend of mine runs TrueTracs front and rear and loves them. I'll be Jeepin' with him tomorrow in Death Valley.

OK, I've decided on the Detroit TrueTrac. Leon Rosser IS about $100 less than most others. I am waffling on getting the front also while I'm doing the order.

Good Luck,

Subject: 98 TJ Dana 30 Front Axle FS
Hello Everyone,
My Dana 44 front axle is now installed and I now have a complete Dana 30
Front Axle (except steering knuckles) for sale. The axle has about 12,000
miles on it, has always had synthetic oil in it, and has factory 3.73:1
gears in it. It is in perfect condition.
I can send the bare housing back to Currie for a $500.00 rebate, or I could
save the shipping fees and just sell the whole thing outright.
If anyone is interested in having a spare assembly laying around as a
spare... let me know. And lest you think that there are tons of these
laying around... Four Wheeler's supply sells all of their straight ones
almost as soon as they come off modified vehicles... but they do have quite
a few BENT ones laying around. <laugh>
If you are interested, let me know within a week... The housing goes back
next Monday if no one is interested.
The price? $550.00
If I send the housing back... the axles and u-joint assemblies will be
available for $200.00. I had a great deal of interest in the axles so if
you want them... let me know now.
Regards,
Joe West

Yeah I can see what I can do about setting up a run. Just let me know when
would be a good time for all of you guys. Right now my days off are Friday
afternoons (I get out of college at noon) and Saturdays but if I have enough
fair warning I can take a sunday off also. My biggest problem is trying to
get at least 1 other person to go with me on some of the tougher area's as I
don't have a winch yet and well no armor yet either ;) But I am always more
than willing to help out where I can!

OK, I've decided on the Detroit TrueTrac. Leon Rosser IS about $100 less than most others. I am waffling on getting the front also while I'm doing the order.

Good Luck,

I highly recommend the Garmin series, in particular the GPS III Plus.

Subject: Re: Diff gear change question
One of the good things about the Detroit Truetrac is that it is gear driven and requires no special additives in the fluid. The Tracloc is clutch driven and will wear out long before the Truetrac. A limited slip in the front or the rear will be transparent on the street, unlike a locker which would take some getting used to. A limited slip is preferable to a locker if you ever drive in snow or ice.
To transfer torque to the wheel with the most traction you may sometimes need to tap the brakes to load it up. I think you'd be surprised at how much your offroad performance would improve if you had them front and rear.
Take it easy,

Chris,
I put a Detroit TrueTrac in my D30 when I put the Detroit Locker in the rear.

Good Luck,

I have a detroit no slip in the rear and a powerlok up front and I hate
my powerlok with a passion. Thing never locks up when its needed,
regardless of wether my foots on the brakes or not, the minute one tire
lifts off the ground the other stops spinning. Very irritating.

Regards,
Joe West
