Linda,
Did you happen to get that phone number from that flatfender? I am also in the market for another Jeep. I was going to find a beater car to buy so I can work on my TJ at my leasure and not have to woryy about transport for work. My wife told me to find a Jeep instead since she knows I'll be doing a Jeep rebuild project after my airplane project is done and out of the garage. I would love to find a flatfender.
Anyone no of anymore needy Jeeps?
I found a 1954 M38A1 in this weekends paper, but am getting no answer at the number listed except for a generic answering machine. They have not returned my calls. It was listed for $1200
For those who are keeping score, I have decided to nix the supercharger, turbo, or engine swap ideas and improve what I have now by bolting on some much less expensive upgrades (power chip, free flow exhaust, etc). That's where the money for the "new" Jeep will be coming from.

Subject: [az_vjc] Pam's Jeep
Hello all
After many hours of discussion, Pam has changed her mind about getting a TJ.
Don't panic.........she still wants a Jeep - but we're going to build one.
The deciding factor was the question "What would you do if you rolled a
vehicle that we still owe money on?"
We've decided to shop around for a project CJ.......something that we can
buy in full and build up to the specs she wants. That way we/she doesn't
have to worry about things like resale value, full coverage insurance, etc,
etc, etc.
So.......does anybody have a good line on a potential project vehicle that
they aren't going to buy for themselves?

gear upgrade (stock 3:73 to 4:11) for the rear Dana 44 in my TJ (they can

When I called them, they said it would require a new carrier for the larger

Is this correct?

Yup - I believe they're correct...which means the factory limited slip is a
ghost - it's part and parcel w/ the carrier. Try calling 4 Wheeler Supply
just to double check the need to replace the carrier...but I recall that it
will be necessary.
Might be a good time to look at a locker, or a beefier l/s. The stock Track
Lock is ok, but there are better ones out there. There should be no
additional installation charge for adding a locker now, since they'll have
it all apart anyway.

If you want the real scoop on all XJ(CHEROKEE) related things check out
WWW.NAXJA.ORG it is a really neat club/website that has nation wide members.
There is a tech forum and you can post any questions pertaning to the XJ
(CHEROKEE). I have a 93xj sport and love it.. If you plan on modifying your
soon to be XJ I would start with something older than 1995. I have heard
that anything more than a 2in on 95 or newer requires a slip yoke eliminator
($$$) they are expensive and you have to get a new drive shaft also.. I have
a 3in lift right now and within the next few weeks it will be total of 5in
lift. All I really have to do to add that much lift is spring spacers and
tapered lift blocks and longer U bolts and longer slip yoke and longer brake
lines.
total for 2in extra on top of 3in. $67.00 blocks/spacers (front and rear) U
bolts were free. Brake lines $35.00 and Longer slip yoke average about 60.00
on the 95 or newer. The slip yoke eliminator cost around 500.00 and the new
drive shaft, I hve no clue what that would cost.. and that's only for 2 to 3
in lift... little older is better in my eyes especially on a budget..

To all who want to join Hal, My Dad, and I on the run please let Hal know.
Unless you would like to call long distance OR drop me an email.
James Junkin, I will be calling you on the 27th with the run info that I get
from Hal.
Those who would like to see a stock XJ in action should show up. I know
this run is during the week but here is the deal with the timing.
My dad is a truck driver and lives in AZ. His days off are Mon - Thursday.
I normally work Sun-Thurs but am taking a vacation as my birthday is on the
25th (Saturday). So I turn 25 on the 25th in the year 00. Kinda Ironic
isn't it ;) Anyways Between promising my mom (who does not enjoy 4 wheeling
even on stuff you can go 2 wheel on) that I would spend the day with her
(but I am detailing my jeep first to remove cactus and brush scratches) so I
told my dad I would come down during the week (besides after 8 months on the
job and going to school full time I need the break).
Hal is (I hope) taking us on a decent trail that will allow me to tear up my
XJ some more (well hopefully I won't) and to help me learn a little more
about trail riding. I am a member of tread lightly and once I get my XJ
tinted it will be shown on the windshield and am working as much as I can
with the BLM to reopen trails and set up designated trails (Which BTW there
are several areas opening up here in the Las Vegas area if anyone is
interested in finding out about) along with talking with the USFS to reopen
some old trails in the MT Charleston area. Right now there are only a few
trails but they are basically gravel roads and the such.
God I am long winded today. Just excited I guess. Bought my Jeep back in
Jan/Feb (after 2 months of stress getting it but I have no regrets and am
very happy with it) and my Birthday is coming up so my insurance will go
down more unless I make the insurance repair my jeep <snicker>.

They are correct. 3.92 and up on the Dana 44 requires a carrier replacement. Since the Tracloc IS your current carrier you'll need to upgrade. I'd recommend either a Detroit Truetrac limited slip ($299@ Leon Rosser), or a Detroit locker ($459@ Macromotive.com).
The carrier cutoff for the D30 is 3.73 and up so you will be okay up front. Why not upgrade the open diff now to a Truetrac LSD for $299 ? Since you are removing the carriers to do the R&P setup the new locker or LSD install is essentially free. If you decide to add one later you have to pay installation all over again...its better to do it all now.
BTW, What is their phone number? I need to get my new gears and lockers installed in about a week.
Good Luck,

Those loose rocks came courtesy of the owner of the big military wagon who
was hung up there when we arrived. Of course, we moved them all out of the
way so us jeepers would have a challenge (not really, but we did make it
look easy!)

The deciding factor was the question "What would you do if you rolled a

We've decided to shop around for a project CJ.......something that we can

So.......does anybody have a good line on a potential project vehicle that

Subject: Oil Leak
I seem to have an oil leak in my '91 YJ that's getting worse. I don't
really know enough to tell where exactly it's coming from, but it
appears to be from underneath rather than up top leaking down. It
seems to leak in the driveway more after I run it hard on the highway,
but just a small bit when not so hard. I dunno...maybe a rear main,
oil pan gasket...I have no idea. Can anyone recommend a shop,
preferable East Valley, that does this sort of work? Or is there
anyone in the club willing to look at it? I've thought of just
attacking it and replacing all the gaskets anyways...it's got 86,000
miles on it...and hope that solves the problems.
I have to head to the midwest for a business trip in a couple of weeks
and figured that'd be a good time to get it fixed. I'll be near the
Badlands at Attica, Indiana if anyone's from there....too bad I can't
take the Jeep.
By the way, I replaced my battery with an Optima red top. $119 at
Offroad Unlimited (includes $5 core charge). I called all over and
they had the best price. Thanks to everyone for the responses.

Well, I have an appointment with AZ Differential next saturday to do the
gear upgrade (stock 3:73 to 4:11) for the rear Dana 44 in my TJ (they can
only do one end per day and I can only do it on saturdays).
When I called them, they said it would require a new carrier for the larger
gear. They indicated that beyond 3:93 gears the carrier must be changed.
Is this correct?
How does that affect my factory limited slip diff?

Yup - I believe they're correct...which means the factory limited slip is a
ghost - it's part and parcel w/ the carrier. Try calling 4 Wheeler Supply
just to double check the need to replace the carrier...but I recall that it
will be necessary.
Might be a good time to look at a locker, or a beefier l/s. The stock Track
Lock is ok, but there are better ones out there. There should be no
additional installation charge for adding a locker now, since they'll have
it all apart anyway.

Good Luck,

Linda,
Did you happen to get that phone number from that flatfender?

Hello all
After many hours of discussion, Pam has changed her mind about getting a TJ.

I have ran Woodpecker, is Lower Ajax any harder. Woodpecker is about all my TJ can handle (2" lift 31" tires). I should have my rear TK sliders by then also and would love to give them a try. Count me in if Ajax is not any rougher let me know where we are meeting

Tom do you have somone change your oil? if so I'd check the oil plug on the
bottom of your oil pan. Sometimes the quickie lube places don't get it
tightened up all the way.
Just a thought

DOH!!! I got to the main page for that site, read as far as the "Gallery:
Sample Images of Tucson" line and skipped it!!!!
I did find a link to the USGS Sonoran Desert Field Station that offers
online maps for free........Mike P is checking out a 35 meg map of maricopa
county right now (he's on speedchoice - real fast) to see how good it
is........
