Hello everyone,
I am going to the MOAB, Utah on Thursday, April 6th to
join with the Allied Signal 4x4 Club (lead by Bernie
Sutherland "Dirty Dog") to do some 4wheeling. I am
planning to leave N. phx around 4pm (8-9hrs drive) and
spend 2 days there on 4 wheeling & checkout the
sceneries, and starting heading back to AZ on Sunday
morning (4/9). This is my first trip to Moab so, if
anyone is interested to convoy with me on this trip or
just want to tag along, please let me via email or
call me at (623)492-9780 after 6pm for more details.
The more the merrier!!

time cleaning up the desert, instead of complaining about non-existent

After the Rock Crawling event, several individuals called and e-mailed
to State and BLM officials that "The Desert had been destroyed". At the
invitation of BLM and concerned with the allegations of "Destruction",
Mr. Terry Heslin, State OHV Coordinator, visted the site last week to
see for himself what damage had been done. Today, I received the
following e-mail from him. Thought it might be appropriate for posting.

sounds interesting. How difficult are the trails that you all plan on
taking? I have a stock cherokee--she's pretty good, but heavy duty rock
crawling isn't the best.

Doug,
What's the trail leading up to the waterfall rated as? I may be able to
do a day trip and help out up to that point. Sounds from the description
as though the waterfall is the guardian before the rest of the trail gets
ugly, right? Where's this located?

Subject: Re: Trailers
My brother-in-law bought one of the Coleman units almost two years ago.
One of the first mods was to get rid of the little axle they provide and
he dropped a heavy axle under it with the same bolt pattern as his CJ7.
I think his trailer tires are smaller than the Jeep's (about a 30" vs
33s) but it definitely gets some clearance that way. Of course, that
meant several more nights under the trailer adding taller jacks and more
accessories.
He also used to pull a small flip-out trailer behind the CJ, when folded
the top was about twice the size of the Sears X-Cargo that was bolted to
the top, but was about 2.5 to 3 feet tall. When the whole mess was
folded out, he had a bed that folded forward and was supported by the
tongue, and enough usable floor space to put another kid in a sleping
bag. It's been years since I've seen that one in action, but could
probably find out the original maker before he modified it.
Oddly enough, I can't find any two ratings in the Factory Manual for the
CJ5. GVWR is only 3750 pounds, and I'm not sure I'd want to tow much
more than a little foldout popup with an 84" wheelbase. Larry, are you
sure about the engine size? AMC's 3 popular V8 engines were the 304
(5.0L), 360 (5.9L), and 401(6.6L). CJ's only had the 304 as a stock
motor.

Hello everyone
Someone in either the AZ_VJC or the 1FSJ list is sending out the
WScript/kak.worm virus. This virus exploits a security breach in MS Outlook
Express 5.0 and is sent via HTML e-mail messages. According to Mcaffee.com,
this virus can only be caught/cleaned using their version 4.0 or higher (not
sure about Norton). Please update your virus scanning software and clean
your systems!!!!
I have received this virus twice in the last two days.......unfortunately I
cannot pinpoint exactly who is sending it out, since I have received it in a
'batch' of email (over 50 messages) each time. All of my messages are sent
in plain text, so I'm pretty sure that I haven't been sending it back out to
the groups - again relying on Mcaffee's information and software here.
More information on this virus can be found at:
http://vil.mcafee.com/vil/wsh10509.asp
thank you (I think.......)

FYI-
McAfee Anti-Virus users can download free updates to the virus DAT files
from http://download.mcafee.com/updates/updates.asp
Norton (Symantec) users can download from
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html
Both programs also offer access to updates from the anti-virus programs
themselves, but those are "read-the-directions" type of processes so I
won't get into them here. Since this exploits a security hole in
Microsoft's Outlook Express and Outlook programs, they have more
information available on their website at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/fq99-032.asp
I strongly recommend Windows98 users update the security of their browser
by clicking Start..Run..Windows Updates to download the newest security
patches for Windows98 and Internet Explorer 5. Other Microsoft product
updates are linked from there as well.
Thanks for the heads-up, Len.

Subject: Re: I stole a Cherokee!!!!
Gotta love that Full Size Jeep List.............the Cherokee model line
didn't come out until '74, so I figured that either the title/vin had been
read incorrectly or it was a Wagoneer with Cherokee badges. I posted my
doubts about the year of the truck on the FSJ list and the collective brain
nit-picked the pictures. This is what I got back:
Looks like a good deal, Len. However, it is not a 1971 Cherokee:
- FSJ Cherokees came out in model year 1974.
- The 1974 Cherokee was a 2-door narrowtrack (model 16).
- The round Indian head "S" badge was introduced in model year
1975. (There was a different "S" badge used in 1974.)
- The 2-door widetrack (model 17) Cherokee was introduced as a
late 1975 model, really an early 1976 model.
- The 4-door Cherokee (model 18) was not introduced until model
year 1977, and the 4-door Cherokee had this grille only in 1977 and
1978.
- This Cherokee has the wrong instrument cluster for 1971, but the
right one for an "S" model in 1977.
- The Cherokee "S" body stripe is the 1977 stripe (these changed a
bit every year). This also has the right wheels for a 1977 Cherokee.
BTW, all things considered, a 1977 Cherokee is preferable to a
1971 Wagoneer -- parts are much easier to get, among other
positives.

You must be a tax accountant. No normal person would let a simple thing
like a tax deadline stop them from an all day Jeep outing. File an
extension. Oops, now I remember. Your refund is your lift...;-)

Subject: AZ Run on the 28th of March (Tuesday)
To all who want to join Hal, My Dad, and I on the run please let Hal know.
Unless you would like to call long distance OR drop me an email.
James Junkin, I will be calling you on the 27th with the run info that I get
from Hal.
Those who would like to see a stock XJ in action should show up. I know
this run is during the week but here is the deal with the timing.
My dad is a truck driver and lives in AZ. His days off are Mon - Thursday.
I normally work Sun-Thurs but am taking a vacation as my birthday is on the
25th (Saturday). So I turn 25 on the 25th in the year 00. Kinda Ironic
isn't it ;) Anyways Between promising my mom (who does not enjoy 4 wheeling
even on stuff you can go 2 wheel on) that I would spend the day with her
(but I am detailing my jeep first to remove cactus and brush scratches) so I
told my dad I would come down during the week (besides after 8 months on the
job and going to school full time I need the break).
Hal is (I hope) taking us on a decent trail that will allow me to tear up my
XJ some more (well hopefully I won't) and to help me learn a little more
about trail riding. I am a member of tread lightly and once I get my XJ
tinted it will be shown on the windshield and am working as much as I can
with the BLM to reopen trails and set up designated trails (Which BTW there
are several areas opening up here in the Las Vegas area if anyone is
interested in finding out about) along with talking with the USFS to reopen
some old trails in the MT Charleston area. Right now there are only a few
trails but they are basically gravel roads and the such.
God I am long winded today. Just excited I guess. Bought my Jeep back in
Jan/Feb (after 2 months of stress getting it but I have no regrets and am
very happy with it) and my Birthday is coming up so my insurance will go
down more unless I make the insurance repair my jeep <snicker>.

Subject: track log and waypoints for my WhiteTanks run
I have converted my Garmin track log and waypoints into Waypoint+ file
format. (a freebee GPS program available on the web). If anyone wants a
copy of the file, just drop me an e-mail and I'll attach it and send it
right back. I've already got a couple of the guys taken care of who wanted
a copy of it.
This track covers a nice steep section that is at least a 3+ or better on
the down hill side. I personally would never have tired climbing it before
I had put my Detroits in (I am probably over cautious a bit though) and
geared down. It also takes you past "the dune" on the way back to Phoenix
(heading east), among many other washes that present good challenges.
If you want a copy, just ask.

Subject: TAX preparation HELP!
I have been having my taxes done by H&R block Premium for the last 6
years. I have both AZ state and Federal done in less than 45 minutes,
and even with buying a new house and selling my old one last year, and
having two jobs, and operating a mechanical design company on the side
(1099 contract, so I wasn't paying quarterly estimates), it still cost
me only $200.00, and I ALWAYS get more back than I did when I used to
use Turbo TAX (and if you buy the federal and state, that's $100.00, and
you have to bone up on all the new additions each year.).
The office I go to is on 48 th street and Warner in Phoenix, and the
lady I have do it is Diane Barret. ASK FOR HER SPECIFICALLY! She is the
one who writes the software that H&R Block uses to figure out
everyone's taxes! She's bee doing it for like 20 years. There is no one
better, TRUST ME!
... if you have her do your taxes, tell her I sent you, and she'll send
me a check for $25.00, and I think she'll discount yours, $25.00 too!

Hal,
We have been using Garmin III plus units mounted on motorcycles and
quads (units are shock mounted on the handle bars)since last spring to
GPS all trails in the Santa Ritas. This is being done to support a
Phase III grant from AZ State Parks OHV Fund. To date, we have done
almost 300 miles using these units. Only failure was on an old GPS II
that was ready to die anyway.
We have also been extremely satisfied with the accuracy of the units.
We download the files from the Garmin units to PC's and then overlay
them onto digitized USGS maps with a program called OZI Explorer.
Shareware about $60. USGS digitized maps for Arizona are available at
the U of A server for free. I would strongly suggest you have at least
a T1 connection to download them though because they are 7.5 minute
maps and the file sizes are huge.
Always keep in mind that you will never be "dead on" unless you are
using a differential receiver. If you would like, I can put you in
contact with the individual that has done most of the work and he can
give you some input.
One other point, Garmin is in my opinion the best unit on the market.
(I am sure others will have their own opinion on this but that is what
this chat board is all about, isn't it) It is not the cheapest but this
is one of those times when you get what you pay for.

I've had a 69, a 72, and a 74 bronco. I also had a 85 Eddie Baurer
BroncoII, and two Toyota Fourunners.
I leased a 2000 Cherokee Sport last month. My lease is through jeep
(Chrysler), and they are running a special on the Cherokee this month.
I think it's $1800 down and $279.00 a month. you have different mileage
options to choose from, which will effect the monthly payment. Mine is
12,000 miles per year. I put down $2500, and my payment with tax is
$255.17. the sticker on my truck was $26,000, and I negotiated it down
to $20,090 before tax.
At the end of the lease, I can 1. return it and walk away, 2. buy it
and keep it, or 3. sell it, pay off the lease, and keep any residual.
I'm modifying mine, so I will either keep it or sell it and pay off the
lease. In 3 years when my lease is up, I will pay $13,000 for the
Cherokee. it is written into the lease.

Mr. Terry Heslin, State OHV Coordinator, visted the site last week to

BTW, all things considered, a 1977 Cherokee is preferable to a
1971 Wagoneer -- parts are much easier to get, among other
positives.

>Well, I don't know what year Bronco you had, But I did the same thing.

Hal;
What's the URL for the U of A site for the USGS digitized maps? Also, any
chance these Garmin tracks of the Santa Ritas are available?
Thanks!
Larry

Hal,
We have been using Garmin III plus units mounted on motorcycles and
quads (units are shock mounted on the handle bars)since last spring to
GPS all trails in the Santa Ritas.
