If not, WHERE are we going? I put some disconnects on my XJ last weekend, and I want to take 'em off... if you know what I mean...

I used Pro Comp stainless steel brake lines, I got them from Leon Rosser in
Alabama, www.thinkjeep.com , it's been a few years but I think I paid around
$100 for front and rear lines for a 4" lift. You might check them out, I
haven't had any problems with them yet and absolutely no leaks.

Did you specify that your Corp 8.25 is a 29 spline? Shops seem to have
trouble differentiating between the older Corp 8.25 27 spline and the
newer 29 spline axle that came in 97+ XJs. You might want to verify
this before buying the locker for the rear end.
Good luck,

Is that quote for $375 per axle or for both? And what is their phone number? I've ordered the 4.88's, Detroit locker, and Powertrax No Slip from Drivetrain Direct and hope to have them installed in about a week. They should complement the new 35" Goodyear MT/R's and 1" body lift quite well :)

Mike, you are right, 350 is far away better from the 258.! As I said, its just not the best engine overall...
Just remember we can compare things in two ways, so you can call better one or another;
A is heavier than B
B is lighter than A
Like in business, you can FOCUS on what you want to show, and get on the shadows what is not good to show =)
Maybe after I swap the 350 into the buggy Ill be able to give a better opinion of it...

8.0L V10 from a 96 Viper GTS that provides 450 horsepower and 495
foot-pounds of torque. I think Larry proved the point. Chevy350 has 165 less
ftlbs than a 10,000 dollar engine.. I'd go for the 350..

The stock 1995 350 TBI going in my CJ7 has has torque ratings that will
blow away a 4.0 and are equal with the 258 throughout its powerband but
continues on after the 258 has peaked.
the 4.0l (242 MPI) produces 220ftlbs of torque at 4000rpms.
the 4.2l (258 I6) produces 210ft lbs of torque at 2000rpms.
the 5.7l (350 TBI) produces 330ftlbs of torque at 3000 rpms.

Well, my humble opinion....
I have a CJ7, and about a year ago, I got a Brand new 350 Carb Engine,
paid around $2000 for it. After using the 258, I just couldn't take it
off.! Its a good trail engine, It wont ever give you the HP and torque
a Big Small Block V8 will throw....
Well, to be brief, I'm keeping the 350 for a Rock Buggy, and decided to
work on the 258, and this is what I have done to it:
Chevy 6L HEi Ignition
4BBL offenhouser Intake
390cfm Holley Carburetor (invested around $100 to make it work great on
slopes, still not perfect)
K & N Air filter
About to install a new camshaft and a new double timing chain
Aluminium head cover
Bored the engine too...
With this all, the engine works way better than any other I have seen...
To be true, I had been a Chevy fan since I can remember, the 350 is a
good engine, but its has not the best HP/torque/ci relation... I like a
lot more the 302 or even the 351w (which is called the best v8 ever
made, don't ask why =) )
Maybe I'm not being clear, its just IMO that is worth to five a try to
the 258...
Feel free to ask anything, I'm glad to help.!

If you're considering spending $3000 on a SuperCharger/TurboCharger,
then a V-8 engine swap makes a lot more sense. My Jeep originally came
with the I6 258, which I believe is virtually the same as the engine in
the TJ's now (just has a longer stroke). I wanted to swap to a V-8
because of the loss of horsepower at high altitudes (Colorado). The
important thing for Az emissions is that you have the same equipment on
your V-8 as would be comparable to a SUV that came with a V-8 of the
same model year. You can do an engine swap for less than $3000, by
purchasing a used engine complete from a wrecking yard. Or you can look
at buying a new "crate" engine from ChevyParts (
http://www.chevyparts.com/ <http://www.chevyparts.com/> ) depending on
the engine you buy, it could be anywhere from $2000 and up, but it will
be a brand new, never run engine with a warrantee (not sure of the
conditions or length though). There are tons of parts available for
hooking up a Chevy V-8 to a Jeep, fairly easy, if you have a standard,
with an auto there's a lot more involved. I'm running a stock 350
Chevy, 4.10 gears in my CJ, and it will just chug away on the trail,
sometimes its idling so slow over rocks that I'm surprised it doesn't
flame out.
Hope this helps, good luck,
: [az_vjc] FW: How to get more HP?
Sorry if this comes thru twice, but I think my email system is biffing
on
me.
Well, the TJ is the right height now.
Now for the next question. How to get more horsepower.
We use my TJ to tow a popup camper. It does pretty well except when we
go to
the Payson area. It really bogs down going up the mountains. I have the
Turbo City bored out throttle body, air tube, and K&N filter. All those
help, but it still is just not enough (especially with all the heavy
stuff
I've been adding lately).
I am going to regear to 4:10s to compensate for the larger tires, but I
need
some recommendations for horsepower.
Here are the options I have been considering:
SVI Supercharger kit
Turbo City Jeep turbo kit
V-8 swap
What I would like is a what you all think of each of these options.
The supercharger and turbo kits are a fixed price (~$3000 - installable
by
me so no labor costs), so I know what I'm getting in to there.
I have no idea the costs surrounding the V-8 swap or if it is comparable
in
cost to the turbo or supercharger.
I think the TJ has plenty of power for wheeling. My primary goal is to
improve power for towing.
I hope I have not opened a new can of worms for this list.

I have a 90 wrangler and I installed the Electromotive JFI kit. It gets rid of your carb and puts a throttle body on in its place, it also changes your ignition over to a direct ignition system. (no distributor). It was a little pricey around $1600 (in 1994) but the benifits were great. More power, no carb, no stalling at angels, gas milege, very few vacume lines and there was more but you get the point. The kit was easy to install (heck I did it) and I think it was a good alternitive to an engine swap.

Agreed !
Now that we have that 258 vs V8 arguement out of our systems, I was over at Hesco's web site. I do like the Stroker kit. Their site is rather lacking in details though. Any ideas on performance numbers on that? The big problem I see with that is that option is that it requires a complete engine rebuild. The down time for that would be quite a bit. They also have a supercharger, but it is $600 more than the others and I'm not sure how it bolts on. I sent them an email with some questions, but have not heard back yet.
Someone mentioned the Rimmer supercharger, but thought he had heard bad things about them. I tried to go to their site today, but it is no longer there. A bad sign I think.
I know that a V8 swap (PLEASE don't start the arguements again) is not a quick thing either. I guess my biggest concern is swapping a V8 in to a modern vehicle and keeping it legal. I had thought abought trying to find a wrecked Grand Cherokee and swapping the engine and systems from that, but I'm not sure if it is possible to graft the 2 systems together that easily.
Maybe I'm just getting in too far over my head with the V8 swap. Any real-world experiences with newer vehicle swaps? Please send them to me directly if you think it will start another engine vs engine war.

One post indicated they thought they were only going to get 14 Jeeps. I

Good time of the year, good weather for Death Valley, but this is also

Subject: Battery and wiring
Well, it appears the battery in my '91 YJ has finally bit the dust. I
need to replace it, so what are the opinions on Optimas? Are they
worth the extra cash? The electrical system (wiring, alternator) are
stock. The Jeep is a daily driver and sees moderate off-road use. I
saw a deal in the AZVJC business directory for Optimas, but with these
high gas prices, I'd be behind after driving from Gilbert to Glendale.
Also, I had to replace my positive battery cable last fall. All I
could find, except the $100 one from the dealer, was a cable from Napa.
It's pretty cheaply made and didn't quite have the right end on it for
the smaller 2nd wire. Anyone know where I can find a higher quality
cable? I'm thinking I'll want one if I decide to go with the Optima.
Thanks,

Hello all
After many hours of discussion, Pam has changed her mind about getting a TJ.
Don't panic.........she still wants a Jeep - but we're going to build one.
The deciding factor was the question "What would you do if you rolled a
vehicle that we still owe money on?"
We've decided to shop around for a project CJ.......something that we can
buy in full and build up to the specs she wants. That way we/she doesn't
have to worry about things like resale value, full coverage insurance, etc,
etc, etc.
So.......does anybody have a good line on a potential project vehicle that
they aren't going to buy for themselves?

Did you specify that your Corp 8.25 is a 29 spline? Shops seem to have
trouble differentiating between the older Corp 8.25 27 spline and the
newer 29 spline axle that came in 97+ XJs. You might want to verify
this before buying the locker for the rear end.
Good luck,

Just remember we can compare things in two ways, so you can call better one or another;
A is heavier than B
B is lighter than A
Like in business, you can FOCUS on what you want to show, and get on the shadows what is not good to show =)

8.0L V10 from a 96 Viper GTS that provides 450 horsepower and 495

ICQ # 18428174

Chris,
I've added your review into the Tech section of the webage, but could
really use some pictures of the setup, especially the installation or
mounting if you have any. They definitely sound like installation was
pretty easy, so like you said, time (and rocks) will tell how they last.

Saw a group of two TJ's...one was red and I think the other was black. One
had an AZ_VJC sticker.
Who was it? We were the group sitting in the shade on the side of the road
eating lunch...white Grand Cherokee.
On a side note... Lots of water in New River. We were hiking today and found
a large indian ruin plus lots of mountain lion (Yikes!) foot prints down by
the river.

David,
Have you installed the spacers and blocks you had posted about
previously? If
so, are there any drive line, steering or other problems? If I remember
correctly, you said this would be in addition to 3" of lift.

should be well over $2.00/gallon out there.

Thanks,
Tom

Optimas are well worth it, IMO. For your described use, and red top sounds
like it would suit your needs. The best price I found was at Batteries Plus,
in Chandler (Elliot and Dobson - I think).

Hello all
After many hours of discussion, Pam has changed her mind about getting a TJ.
