Steve
Is yours an older kit? The newer ones have a mod with allen set screws in the dials to lock them in place. They will exchange them out if you are having problems popping out. As far as engaging, some times you have to drive in a tight circle to get one side to lock in after you lock the other. I have an explanation sheet that came with my kit if you need a copy.

Subject: Re: How to get more HP?

So you're saying with the 350 Chevy that it takes less cubes to make
more torque (Doing it this way, a lower number is better), which is a
good thing. A better way to compare this is to divide torque by CI
(ft-lbs per CI) Then, the higher the number the better.

220/242 = .909 ft-lbs/ci
210/258 = .814 ft-lbs/ci
330/350 = .943 ft-lbs/ci

If we used the ft-lbs/CI of the 258 and wanted to get as much as the
350 then we would need a 405 CI Engine. If we used the ft-lbs/CI of the
4.0L and wanted to get as much as the 350 then we would need a 363 CI
Engine. Grant it, the 4.0L is close to the 350, you have to look at
where it makes its power: 4000 RPM. Last time I went 4 Wheeling, I
don't think I revved above 3000 (probably closer to 2500). I'd much
rather Idle over a boulder than to have to blast it because my engine
doesn't make enough power at lower RPMs.

The other thing about the Chevy 350, is that it makes alot of torque at
idle. I don't have the chart anymore, but I believe it makes about 200
ft-lbs of torque at 700 RPM. And it doesn't make less than 200 ft-lbs
of torque until it nears redline. Which means for nearly it entire
powerband it makes equal to or more torque than the 4.0L and the 258 do
at thier peaks.

The other thing to look at is the availability of parts, you can spend
less and improve more with the 350 than you can with just about any
other engine out there.

If you really want alot of torque (and broken drive train parts) slide
in a 510 CI Chevy Crate motor. Then you'll get about 500 ft-lbs of
torque (or more) and it will cost alot less (about $85,000 less) than
going with a Viper V-10 swap. :)

Melinda,

Good luck in Atlanta! I know we only did one run together, the snow run
above Superior before you had tires on that Jeep, but it looks like
you've learned what's important:
- Have fun with your Jeep, make new friends and force them to endure
your Jeep tales, and come back to do it again!

If your job ever brings you back out this way, you know the meeting
place, so don't hesitate to ask where the next run is.

Subject: Re: TJ Extended Brakelines

I recently did this on my CJ. I used the SuperLift kit ($110 for both
sides) and I was not happy with the quality. The first set I was given
was very poorly machined, they had large groves in the machined
surface. I Installed them without really looking very closely and they
leaked very badly and squirted brake fluid when I stepped on the brakes.

I took them back off and got new ones (no hassles from 4Wheeler Supply,
they saw how bad they were). The new ones still had minor grooves, but
they do seal properly (no leaks). I was much more impressed with the
ones my brother put on his Jeep. I don't remember who manufactured
them, but I do know that they were cheaper ($120 for 3 brake lines, 2
front, 1 rear) and looked to be a higher quality (built right the first
time). I do know that he had to order his from a catalog, and that
4Wheeler Supply did not carry them (I asked).

Other than that, installation is easy, make sure you have brake fluid
handy, and an oil pan to catch the brake fluid. Once you're done,
bleed the brakes.

Hope this helps,

- Mike Chatfield

You did fine! Welcome to the group. We are fairly loose knit so there are few rules. Post what you want pertaining to Jeeps, rides and roads and join the fun. It really is a great group and has made my Jeep time the best time that I have. (And, I do have a life!) If you want AZVJC decals to put on your rig, instructions are in the classified section of the eGroups site.

Jesus,
If it's not too hard to describe in an email, what kind of things did you do to your Holley carb to get it work better on slopes? I have a Holley on the 258 in my 87 Wrangler (need to to check the model) that runs great in most situations. If there are some tweaks though to help, note I did not say eliminate :-), the stalling on steep inclines, I'd really appreciate your advice.

Well, my humble opinion....

I have a CJ7, and about a year ago, I got a Brand new 350 Carb Engine, paid around $2000 for it. After using the 258, I just couldn't take it off.! Its a good trail engine, It wont ever give you the HP and torque a Big Small Block V8 will throw....

Well, to be brief, I'm keeping the 350 for a Rock Buggy, and decided to work on the 258, and this is what I have done to it:

Chevy 6L HEi Ignition
4BBL offenhouser Intake
390cfm Holley Carburetor (invested around $100 to make it work great on slopes, still not perfect)
K & N Air filter
About to install a new camshaft and a new double timing chain
Aluminium head cover
Bored the engine too...

With this all, the engine works way better than any other I have seen...

To be true, I had been a Chevy fan since I can remember, the 350 is a good engine, but its has not the best HP/torque/ci relation... I like a lot more the 302 or even the 351w (which is called the best v8 ever made, don't ask why =) )

Maybe I'm not being clear, its just IMO that is worth to five a try to the 258...

Feel free to ask anything, I'm glad to help.!

If youre considering spending $3000 on a SuperCharger/TurboCharger, then a V-8 engine swap makes a lot more sense. My Jeep originally came with the I6 258, which I believe is virtually the same as the engine in the TJs now (just has a longer stroke). I wanted to swap to a V-8 because of the loss of horsepower at high altitudes (Colorado). The important thing for Az emissions is that you have the same equipment on your V-8 as would be comparable to a SUV that came with a V-8 of the same model year. You can do an engine swap for less than $3000, by purchasing a used engine complete from a wrecking yard. Or you can look at buying a new crate engine from ChevyParts (http://www.chevyparts.com/) depending on the engine you buy, it could be anywhere from $2000 and up, but it will be a brand new, never run engine with a warrantee (not sure of the conditions or length though). There are tons of parts available for hooking up a Chevy V-8 to a Jeep, fairly easy, if you have a standard, with an auto theres a lot more involved. Im running a stock 350 Chevy, 4.10 gears in my CJ, and it will just chug away on the trail, sometimes its idling so slow over rocks that Im surprised it doesnt flame out.

Hope this helps, good luck,

Sorry if this comes thru twice, but I think my email system is biffing on
me.

Well, the TJ is the right height now.

Now for the next question. How to get more horsepower.
We use my TJ to tow a popup camper. It does pretty well except when we go to
the Payson area. It really bogs down going up the mountains. I have the
Turbo City bored out throttle body, air tube, and K&N filter. All those
help, but it still is just not enough (especially with all the heavy stuff
I've been adding lately).
I am going to regear to 4:10s to compensate for the larger tires, but I need
some recommendations for horsepower.

Here are the options I have been considering:
SVI Supercharger kit
Turbo City Jeep turbo kit
V-8 swap

What I would like is a what you all think of each of these options.

The supercharger and turbo kits are a fixed price (~$3000 - installable by
me so no labor costs), so I know what I'm getting in to there.
I have no idea the costs surrounding the V-8 swap or if it is comparable in
cost to the turbo or supercharger.

I think the TJ has plenty of power for wheeling. My primary goal is to
improve power for towing.

I hope I have not opened a new can of worms for this list.

WE HAVE A NEW WINNER.....I do believe the "how to get more HP" thread has
surpassed the "water leak" thread in numbers....and I don't just mean all
the numbers in the messages...which btw, are mostly greek to me....although
I'm beginning to get it..... :)

Agreed !
Now that we have that 258 vs V8 arguement out of our systems, I was over at Hesco's web site. I do like the Stroker kit. Their site is rather lacking in details though. Any ideas on performance numbers on that? The big problem I see with that is that option is that it requires a complete engine rebuild. The down time for that would be quite a bit. They also have a supercharger, but it is $600 more than the others and I'm not sure how it bolts on. I sent them an email with some questions, but have not heard back yet.

Someone mentioned the Rimmer supercharger, but thought he had heard bad things about them. I tried to go to their site today, but it is no longer there. A bad sign I think.

I know that a V8 swap (PLEASE don't start the arguements again) is not a quick thing either. I guess my biggest concern is swapping a V8 in to a modern vehicle and keeping it legal. I had thought abought trying to find a wrecked Grand Cherokee and swapping the engine and systems from that, but I'm not sure if it is possible to graft the 2 systems together that easily.

Maybe I'm just getting in too far over my head with the V8 swap. Any real-world experiences with newer vehicle swaps? Please send them to me directly if you think it will start another engine vs engine war.

Subject: Product Review: Turbo City side rocker bars

Thought maybe some product reviews would be good to see here instead of
arguing about which engine is better so.....

Got my Turbo City side bars this week. Just had to put the on immediately
(wife and kids were complaining about the step up now that the jeep sits
higher).

First impression while lifting the big box UPS left is that these suckers
are heavy.

Opened the box and pulled them out. Very well built. Clean welds. Not a
scratch on them. They are made of ~2"x4" rectangular tubing and hug up to
the body rather well.

The bars do not just bolt on at the ends like a lot of other bars I've seen.
For the Turbo City bars, you must remove one of the side body bolts and
there is a center support on the bar that it sandwiched between the steel
frame body mount and the rubber isolator and bolt under the mount.

Everything fit very well. The instructions indicated that it may have to be
shimmed with washers behind the mounts, but mine required no washers. They
mount to the frame with 5 bolts per side (3 front, 2 rear) with self-tapping
bolts. I'm not sure how well the self-tapping bolts will hold or if they
will strip out eventually. Time (and rocks) will tell.

The only vague item about the installation is that they come with 2 non-skid
steel plates for the tops of the bars where you'd step in, but no
instructions or mounting hardware. There are no holes in the plates or side
bars to mount them. Guess I'll get some stainless screews to mount them or
some non-skid wing-walk tape.

Overall impression - very good.

P.S. I am not affiliated with Turbo City, but I sure have spent a bunch
there.

Just a quick reply. Seems the safest way (emissions wise) to swap a V8
into a newer Jeep is to get a comperable year V8. A late 80's YJ with a
350 from a late 80's Chevy (TBI) should suffice. For the current
emissions standards, you only need to pass the sniffer portion of the
test, hold pressure in the gas tank, and hold pressre with your gas
cap. So a close-in-year 350 should pass the sniffer with no problems.
Just my thoughts.

Well, after a unanimous reply to my "which came first..." question about lift or gears/lockers first, I've decided to do the lockers and gears first.

I've priced out the following:
Rear axle: (Corporate 8.25) Auburn limited slip posi with 4.10 gears.
Front axle: (Dana 30) Tru Trac with 4.10 gears.

I know that the 4.10's are going to be low until I get some bigger tires, but I have the 4sp OD automatic, and I don't do too much freeway driving.

I can get the whole package installed for $1300. Southwest Four Wheel Drive in Phoenix has all the stuff in stock, and they recommended Arizona differential to do the install.

For those interested:
Auburn LS .............................$299
4.10 gears for the Auburn .........$205
Tru Trac LS ...........................$335
4.10 gears for the Tru Trac .......$152

AZ differential will do the install for $375.00, including the bearings, seals, oil and additive for the Auburn.

... Now, if I CAN JUST GET MY OTHER CAR SOLD( I have two guys looking at it this weekend), I can get rolling!
