Well, my humble opinion....
I have a CJ7, and about a year ago, I got a Brand new 350 Carb Engine, paid around $2000 for it. After using the 258, I just couldn't take it off.! Its a good trail engine, It wont ever give you the HP and torque a Big Small Block V8 will throw....
Well, to be brief, I'm keeping the 350 for a Rock Buggy, and decided to work on the 258, and this is what I have done to it:
Chevy 6L HEi Ignition
4BBL offenhouser Intake
390cfm Holley Carburetor (invested around $100 to make it work great on slopes, still not perfect)
K & N Air filter
About to install a new camshaft and a new double timing chain
Aluminium head cover
Bored the engine too...
With this all, the engine works way better than any other I have seen...
To be true, I had been a Chevy fan since I can remember, the 350 is a good engine, but its has not the best HP/torque/ci relation... I like a lot more the 302 or even the 351w (which is called the best v8 ever made, don't ask why =) )
Maybe I'm not being clear, its just IMO that is worth to five a try to the 258...
Feel free to ask anything, I'm glad to help.!

If youre considering spending $3000 on a SuperCharger/TurboCharger, then a V-8 engine swap makes a lot more sense. My Jeep originally came with the I6 258, which I believe is virtually the same as the engine in the TJs now (just has a longer stroke). I wanted to swap to a V-8 because of the loss of horsepower at high altitudes (Colorado). The important thing for Az emissions is that you have the same equipment on your V-8 as would be comparable to a SUV that came with a V-8 of the same model year. You can do an engine swap for less than $3000, by purchasing a used engine complete from a wrecking yard. Or you can look at buying a new crate engine from ChevyParts (http://www.chevyparts.com/) depending on the engine you buy, it could be anywhere from $2000 and up, but it will be a brand new, never run engine with a warrantee (not sure of the conditions or length though). There are tons of parts available for hooking up a Chevy V-8 to a Jeep, fairly easy, if you have a standard, with an auto theres a lot more involved. Im running a stock 350 Chevy, 4.10 gears in my CJ, and it will just chug away on the trail, sometimes its idling so slow over rocks that Im surprised it doesnt flame out.
Hope this helps, good luck,
: [az_vjc] FW: How to get more HP?
Sorry if this comes thru twice, but I think my email system is biffing on
me.
Well, the TJ is the right height now.
Now for the next question. How to get more horsepower.
We use my TJ to tow a popup camper. It does pretty well except when we go to
the Payson area. It really bogs down going up the mountains. I have the
Turbo City bored out throttle body, air tube, and K&N filter. All those
help, but it still is just not enough (especially with all the heavy stuff
I've been adding lately).
I am going to regear to 4:10s to compensate for the larger tires, but I need
some recommendations for horsepower.
Here are the options I have been considering:
SVI Supercharger kit
Turbo City Jeep turbo kit
V-8 swap
What I would like is a what you all think of each of these options.
The supercharger and turbo kits are a fixed price (~$3000 - installable by
me so no labor costs), so I know what I'm getting in to there.
I have no idea the costs surrounding the V-8 swap or if it is comparable in
cost to the turbo or supercharger.
I think the TJ has plenty of power for wheeling. My primary goal is to
improve power for towing.
I hope I have not opened a new can of worms for this list.

Sheeeesh,
Talk about overkill.....And it still only ramps 900...hmmmmm...lets see this
nifty equation..
RTI=900+
Cost=90,000+
Cost/RTI=Cost per RTI Point
90000/900=100
DAMN......$100 Bucks for every RTI Point.....sheeesh
If this were a constant for all trail rigs, my blazer could only ramp a
12......LoL
Sorry, just was blown away at the price....You'd think atleast he would have
gone D60's front and rear.....4wheel steering....etc...hehehe
Just a Morbid passing thought..

Well you forgot to take into account what the TJ does direct from the
factory which is somewhere in the low 500's I think. Therefore he really
only gained 400 RTI points for all that extra cash. He should have taken a
finance class in college ... hehe. Definitely unique though.

Hey Larry, if we do some math...
the 4.0l (242 MPI) produces 220ftlbs of torque at 4000rpms.
the 4.2l (258 I6) produces 210ft lbs of torque at 2000rpms.
the 5.7l (350 TBI) produces 330ftlbs of torque at 3000 rpms.
242/220 = 1.1 cubic inch per lbs of torque
258/210 = 1.228
350/330 = 1.06
And please, don't compare a 95 TBI 350 vs a 80 carb 258 engine man, of course your 350 will blow a 258 engine...
I just mean the 350 is not the best ever made engine, its not even close to...
And remember crawling even on 100:1 @ 3000 rpm is not as great as crawling @ 2000 or 1900 rpm, and at those rpm the 258 and the 350 must have the same or 20+/- lbs torque...
As I said, my opinion

To be true, I had been a Chevy fan since I can remember, the 350 is a good engine, but its has not the best HP/torque/ci relation... I like a lot more the 302 or even the 351w (which is called the best v8 ever made, don't ask why =) )
Maybe I'm not being clear, its just IMO that is worth to five a try to the 258...
Feel free to ask anything, I'm glad to help.!

Jesus,
I originally replied because I thought you were attempting to say that a 350 will not hold up against a 258 as far as torque ratings go. I see that wasnt your point after reading your email again.
But ....
242/220 = 1.1 cubic inch per lbs of torque
258/210 = 1.228
350/330 = 1.06
Those are nice numbers but differing power bands makes them insignificant IMO.
"And please, don't compare a 95 TBI 350 vs a 80 carb 258 engine man, of course your 350 will blow a 258 engine..."
Actually, the figures I offered were for the last model of 258 used in 1990. Yes, it's still comparing apples to oranges.
"I just mean the 350 is not the best ever made engine, its not even close to..."
I agree with you there good buddy.
"and at those rpm the 258 and the 350 must have the same or 20+/- lbs torque..."
I think thats what I said.
Cheers,
LarryM

Yes the Crank swap has been done. You also need the rods from the older
engine too or the pistons pop out the top of the block. you need to use an
early YJ crank so you get the correct pulley mount. It does raise the
compression but not by too much. I don't remember the displacement with just
the crank change but if you also bore it .040 over you get a 4.7 Liter. This
is becoming a rather common swap with us XJ guys. I'm planning on doing it
myself when I rebuild ours in another 50K miles or so. If you need more info
look around at some of the XJ sites.

Ok, heres some flame bait because I'm not too positive on this little
tidbit. From what I understand is that the older 6's had a longer stroke
and smaller bore and the newer ones such as the engines in our TJ's have a
larger bore and shorter stroke.. I was considering the possibilities of
transplanting an older spec (new) crank into my existing 6 banger. This
would of course increase displacement and compression. I'm just not certain
of how much. But if it could be pulled off.. hey, higher compression +
larger displacement = more HP. Course you'd have to run 92 octane gas if
the compression is too high.
I as well did the K&N filter (the tube replacement and not the stock airbox
swap), Walker cat, Supertrapp exhaust, and I personally bored and polished
out the throttle body with the help of a Dremel. I assume you've already
swapped the MAP (mass airflow) sensor. You could also look into a different
cam. I think the only bolt on you have left is the Header. The turbo and
supercharger kits should add a substantial amount of ponies but also cost in
the $3,000 range which would make a v8 swap fesable. Advanced Adapters
should know everything about the swap if you want to go that route. But you
also have to consider the extra power and weight are going to cause many
other problems. So you might have to do a swap on your tranny, tranfercase
and upgrading your front and rear end, especially if you have 30 and 35c.
I put 33's on mine about a year ago and a couple months ago changed the
gearing out to 4:10's. They made a huge difference, I have no problems
getting my rig up to 95 on the freeway in 5th gear. I also have an urge to
race all those lowered hondas that think their race cars around Tempe.. None
of em win by the way. Its funny to see the look on their face when a 4x4
with tires as tall as their car eats them alive. I just know i got my
moneys worth.

The stock 1995 350 TBI going in my CJ7 has has torque ratings that will blow away a 4.0 and are equal with the 258 throughout its powerband but continues on after the 258 has peaked.
the 4.0l (242 MPI) produces 220ftlbs of torque at 4000rpms.
the 4.2l (258 I6) produces 210ft lbs of torque at 2000rpms.

About to install a new camshaft and a new double timing chain

I think the TJ has plenty of power for wheeling. My primary goal is to
improve power for towing.
I hope I have not opened a new can of worms for this list.

Talk about overkill.....And it still only ramps 900...hmmmmm...lets see this
nifty equation..
RTI=900+
Cost=90,000+
Cost/RTI=Cost per RTI Point
90000/900=100
DAMN......$100 Bucks for every RTI Point.....sheeesh
If this were a constant for all trail rigs, my blazer could only ramp a
12......LoL
Sorry, just was blown away at the price....You'd think atleast he would have
gone D60's front and rear.....4wheel steering....etc...hehehe

The stock 1995 350 TBI going in my CJ7 has has torque ratings that will blow away a 4.0 and are equal with the 258 throughout its powerband but continues on after the 258 has peaked.

Jesus,
I originally replied because I thought you were attempting to say that a 350 will not hold up against a 258 as far as torque ratings go.

I think we're missing the point here. The owner of the Jeep plays for
the Minnesota Vikings. He paid someone else to build his Jeep (he bought

just a bit insignificant to him...
It's not entirely unique either. The same guy that built this Jeep built
another similar V10 TJ for a Minnesota-based Cisco engineer.
