Randy, All,
I love the trip to Crown King and my Wife has been craving some of the fudge
from the store in Crown King. I will be there, I just wanted to be sure
that the trip was still a go, and if not, if an alternate trip was desired.
Hopefully the runners will be far enough in front that we won't run into to
many of them. See you Saturday.
On another note, a trip on FR42 near Bartlett has been mentioned. Would
anyone like to do this on a future date (April 1?) I've never been on that
trail or I'd volunteer as trail lead; does anyone want to lead a trip over
FR42?
Also I've been working on a website which I hope to have all of the upcoming
4 wheeling trips listed (with information about who is running them, the
club, the meeting place, the trail rating, what to expect etc..) If anyone
has a trip they would like posted, please e-mail me with the details, and
any pictures they may have of the trail, and I will post to the website.
Thanks,
Mike & Anita Chatfield.

Yep, I have the 4 core radiator from Mepco. I am running the biggest flex fan
that I could get (19"?) and I made an "attempt" at fabricating a fan shroud. On
the street in the middle of the summer, the engine temps stay around 190F and
below (unless I am stuck in traffic, at which point it begins to climb). Off
road it tends to run a LOT hotter. I plan to go to dual electrics before this
summer and custom fab a really nice fan shroud for it. I feel I won't have ANY
problems both on and off road once I do that. Here's what I would do if you
want to run a mechanical fan. Get a 16" flex fan (or equivalent) and build a
real good shroud for it. Completely surround the fan such that it sits in a
"tunnel" and have the box portion of the shroud hug real tight to the outer
parts of the radiator. With this setup and the 4 core Mepco radiator, you won't
have problems overheating in the summers on the street. As for trail driving, I
think you might be pushing the hot limit with the mechanical fan. I think it
still will need a flow like its running down the road even while sitting still.
And this will only happen with electrics.
One other note, since having installed the 4 core and the fan shroud, I've
noticed that the sheet metal that they mount to has begun to "bow" such that the
radiator is moving closer to fan. The added weight of the radiator along with
the added weight of the fan shroud is too much for the sheet metal mounting
points to support. You will want to look to strengthen this area before you
mount the new radiator and shroud. Nothing more ugly than a fan eating your
brand new radiator! :-)
Hope this helps.

It would be very considerate if you guys would consider doing this run

FR42 run on Saturday, and Crown King on April 1 instead of the other way
around. Or, barring all that, at least leave decently late so as to not

Don't know where you heard that, but since coolant can only go as fast as the restriction your thermostat presents to it, I'd have to disagree for the following reasons:
You have an extra "core of water capacity" flowing thru your radiator. Since your engine will cycle through the same GPM usage for any given situation with either the 3 or 4 core, it stands to reason the water out of the 4 core has the greatest cooling potential. The 4 core may be overboard for other geographical areas in the country, but here it definitely is worth considering.
For the record, I wouldn't put 2 core ANYTHING in a V-8. It just doesn't make sense. Your pinching pennies to spend Dollars.

Well, from what Ive heard and seen 4 row cores simply move fluid too
fast to cool it at crawling speeds. I would recommend a 3 row high
effeciency core, an electric fan (for more reasons than just
overheating), and quite possibly an oil cooler. But, Im a bit anal
about cooling out here after a few hard learned lessons. Shrouds
either way are very important.

Even if we give the runners an hour head start, we'd soon be catching
up to them and probably passing most of them up. They will spread out
over many miles during the course of the run. One of the reasons I go
Jeeping is to get AWAY from the crowds. :-)
I'd recommend we give them the trail that day. Either that or get off
an hour AHEAD of the runners. When do they start?

Mike,
I'm not an expert in thermodynamics (in fact, as an electrical engineer; I
hated the class), but I suspect that the difference in flow rate between a
three core radiator and four core radiator does not cause overheating in a
four core radiator at low speeds.
The four core radiator (all other things equal) will flow about 33% more
fluid through it than a three core radiator... however; the flow rate
through the radiator will not be determined significantly by the size
difference between a three and four core radiator, but rather; by the flow
rate of the water pump. The radiator creates a small backpressure to the
water pump, but if the system is designed properly, the backpressure caused
by the radiator will not be significant in a three core radiator, and it
will be even less in a four core radiator. Although a clogged radiator can
control water pump flow rate... a properly operating radiator will not.
The benefits of a four core radiator include;
Greater coolent capacity.
More surface area for increased energy dissipation.
Less back pressure on the water pump.
I can't think of a single drawback to a four core radiator (other than cost
perhaps) when compared to a three core radiator.
(although because the four core radiator is thicker... the resistance to air
flow through the radiator will increase causing a decrease air volume
through the radiator... but I suspect that this third-order effect is
negligible)
Perhaps we can get all those BSMEs out there (who liked thermodynamics) to
speak up and correct me if I'm wrong.

Joe

The runners for the 50 Mile are starting off very early in the morning
(3 am) The runners for the 50k are starting at 7am. We are supposed to
"meet" at the Gas station at 8:30, which means we'll probably roll out
about 9. Once at the trail head, we'll need to air-down and lock-in,
which means we'll probably be leaving the trail head around 10. If we
stop at Fort Misery for lunch, around noon, it will be 3 - 3:30 by the
time we get to Crown King, assuming no one has problems.
Last year, according to thier website, the majority of runners
completed before 3 pm, with a handfull of straglers coming in up to
5pm. As long as we don't make it a race to get up the mountain
ourselves, we should be able to share the trail with the straggling
runners that we will catch up with.
Thoughts?
Mike Chatfield.

Jesus,
Feel free to link back to http://azvjc.web.com It's the official
unofficial site of the AZ_VJC. I try to keep it updated at least once a
week with new runs, new members, and a slowly-growing Tech section.
There is a "Who is" that tells a brief history of the AZ_VJC and our
beginnings, when we quickly bloomed into the largest four-wheel drive
club in Arizona, boasting over 200 members, only a year-and-a-half after
6 of us made our first run to Crown King, AZ.

That's great stuff. Thanks for the info. Next question. Where is a good
place to purchase a thermostatically controlled fan clutch? Checker?
Autozone? Napa? I'm used to the syntrifigual (spelling?) / one way version
that free wheels when the flow through the radiator due to vehicle movement
is faster than the fan is pulling. But I don't know anything about the
thermostatically controlled mechanical fan clutch. Anybody got any "go-to"
spots? Thanks all......

Hello Gang,
A local Dealer here in Safford is running a huge sale on some MT's and
AT's. They are a 6 ply tire with an attractive look, and a heavy deep
aggressive tread pattern. They are made by Cooper Tire. I have never run
Cooper tires before, so I am a little shy to buy. The tires run = 31x10.50,
32x11.50, 33x12.50's. The price through out the tires is = $69.00 per tire
plus tax. Mounting and balance is 6.00 per tire. The warranty is equal to
BFG's MT's. I know that the price is very reasonable, but I have no
knowledge of the life and performance of this tire. I would appreciate any
help in this matter if possible.
Thanks,
Casper

Randy, All,
I love the trip to Crown King and my Wife has been craving some of the fudge

that the trip was still a go, and if not, if an alternate trip was desired.
Thanks,

Hi all,
A friend of mine (she has a Land Cruiser) and I are looking
for this part that fits into (onto?) your spare tire to hold
the license plate. it is round, flat and has a small
light over the plate. I've seen it before on someone's
website and I can't remember who it was.
Any of you seen this or the website?

It would be very considerate if you guys would consider doing this run
on Sunday instead of Saturday. Or, if you can't maybe you could do the
FR42 run on Saturday, and Crown King on April 1 instead of the other way
around. Or, barring all that, at least leave decently late so as to not
cause any trouble. The runners will be done and over by 3PM. This race
has been run for over ten years, and is only one day a year. It is good
for all of us to respect other's reasonable use of the land.
Thanks,

The benefits of a four core radiator include;

Subject: Tire Help!
Hello Gang,
A local Dealer here in Safford is running a huge sale on some MT's and
AT's. They are a 6 ply tire with an attractive look, and a heavy deep
aggressive tread pattern. They are made by Cooper Tire. I have never run
Cooper tires before, so I am a little shy to buy. The tires run = 31x10.50,
32x11.50, 33x12.50's. The price through out the tires is = $69.00 per tire
plus tax. Mounting and balance is 6.00 per tire. The warranty is equal to
BFG's MT's. I know that the price is very reasonable, but I have no
knowledge of the life and performance of this tire. I would appreciate any
help in this matter if possible.
Thanks,
Casper
