How much interest is there in setting up a class?
Last year with the help of Stu, Joey K., Rick Norman, Randy Davis, Flexy Joe, and Hunter (others helped but I forget the names sorry) we ran a class at White Tanks. This area has a lot to offer as to different terrain types.
If we have enough interest in the class and we have enough people interested in helping out. We will set something up. I will set up a run for May 22nd (this is just a sign up spot the date can and probably will change) I can not do it on the 8th or the 15th due to prior commitments. If someone else step-s up to run it those weekends are open.

Hummm I might be able to help out.
But wouldn't it be cooler to have it in a different location? Maybe in the Florence Junction area?
Hackle,
I noticed the post and would like to lend a hand. Just let me know if/what I can do anything to help.

Right now I need some help getting a discusion going to decide on a date and location. We seem to have interest but I would rather not have to make all the calls :) .
If the date of May 22 is ok I just need people to say so.
Joey brought up moving it to FJ. I think it would be a lot more work finding the rignt type of places and they will require a lot more driving to get back and forth. White Tanks all the areas we use are close together. But that is just my opionion. If everyone else wants it in FJ, and is willing to find the right type of locations for the different types of terrain. I am willing to go to FJ.
BTW thank you to everyone who has offered to help. It looks like we will get a great group out to the class again.

I have never wheeled at the White Tanks, but I know that FJ is all Trust land so everyone would need to have permits. As I hear the sheriff's have been out there a lot lately. While we would want all users to have the permit anyway if the White Tanks are not Trust land then that could be a determining factor.

Thanks for the input Jack.
A few corrections and I do agree that everyone should have a State Land Use Permit.
Most of the trails in FJ are on BLM land.
Most of the access to the trails is on Sate Trust Land. Both the Cottonwood Canyon road and the Mineral Mountain Road are on State Trust Land. It is a good idea to get a permit as it shows how much the land is used by the number of permits they sell.

My bad Hackle. I just always thought that most everything out there was Trust land. Thanks for the education. You are right they are definitely worth having though. Just one less thing to worry about.
Howdy,
I'd be more than happy to help out with a few calls and would love to work with people on learning to spot others. I'm finding this to be rather a difficult thing to teach some of my friends while I'm driving and being lead into who knows what.
I'm fine with that weekend and put off an overnighter into Fossil Creek that weekend for the course. I'll be taking out several couples the weekend of the 8th and 9th for some lite jeeping and general camping fun. Thinking about the Wet Beaver Creek area for now and Memorial Day weekend will be spent on one of the Harleys. So, either the 22nd or 15th would be open currently.
The only thing I don't like about the White Tanks is all of the shooting and trash. We were out there about two months back and had to ask a group to stop shooting accross the wash to allow my group to enter the appetizer trail area. (we passed a group of about 25 people in a shooting frenzy on the way in and heard lots of full auto fire) We were also taken aback by just how much trash was thrown everywhere.
The trails and rocks were great to play on and were the catalyst for my winch purchase.
Just let me know what the game plan is.

Count me in to help... I will be bringing two young men to learn the ropes. One is my youngest son who got his license last monday on his 16th b-day and will be driving the 92 XJ for a few years (until he gets his Vette and a new Bassboat, in no particular order, so he says... He'll still need the XJ to pull the boat !! Until reality sets in !!) The other is a young friend, almost another son, who rolled into my drive way with his new TJ (12 miles on the odometer) this afternoon. Talk about a kid "beaming with pride", he's wanted a TJ for years !
I'm very proud of both these young men and am looking forward to having them go thru the course, where ever it is held.. :D

Huck, I agree. I have a couple of friends that like to roll with us and they could definitely use some pointers on spoting. I could show them, but then I would have to let'em drive my jeep and that isn't going to happen. I try to tell them how I want to go over an obstacle, but sometimes they get me off line.
Oh, well. Guess I should get better at driving.

Well 5/22 seems to be working for most people so we will stick with that.
We will keep it at White Tanks as we can find everything we need easier.
It will be hot so we start at 8:00 AM. OK?
I need all the people that are willing to help instruct to e-mail me. Put 101 Instructor in the subject line. I will get back to all of you so we can make plans as to who does what.

We will be driving up from Tucson and would like general directions to get to the White Tanks. Also will probably stay at a motel in the area any suggestions.

There's a Days Inn (I think that's what it is...) at Miller Rd and I-10, less than a mile from the air down spot at Watson Rd.

I would love to lend a hand (I have a visual demonstration of why not to let your friend spot you when he doesn't know what he is doing), and bring my fiance out in her ZJ. Would it be alright for a fullsize Bronco to come out? Let me know anything I can do, thanks, AL

I sent out an e-mail last night about the class. You did not get one??
This a copy of what I sent out.
Ok we will need to meet before everyone else gets there. Class starts at 8:00 so a 7:00 meet time for the instructors would probably work. Courses Small side hills Randy Davis (same as last year) Big Sand hill ??? Safety and responsibility ???? Appetizer (rock crawl) ??? Area trip (short) ??? Any thing I missed ? Ideas are welcome Jim F.
FYI- I received the email and sent off a reply.

Ok I thank everyone for being interested and for offering to help. Flexy that sounds like a great idea. The only problem I have is (and i am trying to resolve ASAP) I was just asked to work the weekend of the 22nd. My company only asks about 3 to 4 Sat. a year from me. Although this came up as short notice to someone like me that is planned out for three to four weeks. They gave me a week plus notice. I am working on finding a replacement now. I do not want to ruin something that to me is very important but I do need to honor the compnay that pays me. I will keep everyone advised of what comes up and if nobody offers to run this I will not leave anyone in the void. I will piss off my employeer as this was scheduled first. I hope some one steps up to run this and with the number of members in this group I am sure someone will.
Sorry Jim F.

Just a thought, but, Joe West's Kill Switch seminar is the same weekend and I bet we have some members that would like to do both, (Both events have good sign up numbers !) Would it be possible to move the Jeep 101 out a few weeks? It will be a little warmer, but we all live here anyhow! I know you will never please everyone but this will allow Hackle to stay in charge and attend.... If so, fine.... If not, I will step up to help if we could generate a "committee" of 3-5 people to run it... I just wouldn't be able to do it by myself to the level this group needs/deserves...... OK, lets get the discussion going !

If it will make things easier... I don't mind moving out the kill switch workshop a couple of weeks.

I have had several members step up and offer to cover this event so I am sure it is well covered. Wish I could be there but some times it is not in the cards:) Joe did we have that many people with a conflict that wanted to do both?

I have not posted this to the yahoo group but it is on the BBS. I will not be able to attend the jeep 101 class due to work. They only ask about 2 to 3 Saturdays a year from me and asked for this Saturday. I asked for help in running this event as I think it is very important. Many people stepped up to the plate to take care of this. I want to thank them (several I only know from e-mail)

Each and everyone has stepped up to the plate to make this a great event. They all are taking their free time to put this on. Remember please to thank each and everyone. They and each of you participating are the future of our sport. Thank you for your time and for caring enough about our sport to take your free time and be an instructor or participant at this event.

Hi everyone, I will be doing the lecture part on saftey, first aid, leave no trace, recovery equip, etc... I will set up a little booth, probably on the tailgate of my truck, ...
I have to go to Mexico on a fast turnaround this afternoon so I will be out of pocket until tonite.. Can anyone contact John @ Hunteroffroad and possibly stop by his shop to pick up the Banner!! This is an event we probably should have tried to publicize (sp) oh well, I will be out there at 6:00 Sat am
Another idea if anyone has the time and ability... How about printing up some generic Certificates we could fill in the participants name and "graduate" them ?? Just a thought if anyone wants to run with it

hey its about 12:40 and I just talked to John, first off he wasnt in the shop right now, he will get back in like and hour and half and hes going to call me back then. I asked him about the banner and he said that he knows he was sopposed to have but hes not sure if really does right now. Hes said he'll give me a call back when he gets back to the shop. The only problem is if he does have it he wont be in till 10ish tomorrow. So it would need to picked up today. I got to work the rest of the afternoon so if someone if that area would be able swing by let me know and i'll call you when he calls me back. 602-622-0363
