...Or... Skip the lift for now, do the rear locker with stock gears, and add a 4x4 custom fabrication dual tube rock rail and a 4.5'x 5'x6" Con-FERR one piece welded roof rack.
I smashed my driver's side rocker panel (no too bad, but noticeable) this weekend at the crawler competition. My first ding! ...I baptize thee in the name of the Dirt, the rocks, and the Trees...
I know that either choice would improve my chances of not getting any more damage to my truck, but with the moderate wheeling I plan on doing, which would you guys (and gals) choose?

Hi all,
The weather is getting just right and my jeep is almost ready to go
again.Just have a few bugs to get rid of after changing the
motor, tranny, and transfer case. Can't wait to go on a run soon.I've been
reading about all the land closure stuff and wonder if anyone knows if
the big off-road companies who make a lot of money off of us are using
any of this money to help fight these guys.Seems to me they would want
to because they stand to lose a lot.

Prices include a shipping estimate.
Or how about rear lockrite or gearless locker. About $250.
Rocky Road Outfitters Rockrail. About $280.
Budget 2" lift or 3" without shocks (most 3" use stock length shocks).
$120
Rusty Transfer case Skid pan. $120.
This comes in just under $800 and would allow you to go to 31x10.50-15
or 30x9.50-15 tires when you get the money.
Everything but the lift kit is a keeper when you decide to go higher.
In fact the Budget boost might even be usable to turn the Rusty's 4.5
into a 5.5 later.
Just my recommendation.

I saw a guy in an FSJ cherokee on course two on Sunday. It was sort of goldish
in color and was running a carb. Right? I was watching him try to get up one
of the hardest obstacles on the course. He was having a hell of a time keeping
it running with the carb. The entry to the obstacle was at least a 45 degree
angle and then some. He ended up having to winch to the top. But then most
everyone had to on that one. He gave it a hell of a run though. I have some
pictures that I am going to post soon. Keep an eye out for them.

some houses thorugh the curves an found a single dune. While it was fun and
I will most likely go back, if nothing else to clean the place up, it's a
mess. The hill was fun. Is this the place or is there more?
There were quite a few people out there this weekend. Seemed most of the
quad and bike bunches were making the trash.
Did see yellow wrangler and a Ghost Black TJ. This was the most interesting
part of our trip. As we headed down the path, East, next to the wash from
Miller road, a Black TJ approched us heading West. As we reached less that
a 1/8 mile from each other we lost site at a little wash area that we had to
go down and back up. The Ghost TJ was nowhere to be found. We looked
everywhere. There was no place to go. My brother and I could not figure out
where it went and we could not find them. Weird thing is, we both saw it.
Anyway we had a great time.
Thanks for the directions.

Hal,
It will stay unlocked. It requires vacuum to stay engaged, which is why old rotted vacuum lines won't let the vehicle get into 4 wheel drive. There is a company out that has actuation lever to do just what you were talking about. I don't have the URL but you should be able to find it doing a few searches on the net.

The Forest Service road and transportation policy proposal has been published in the federal register; information on that issue will be forthcoming. It is very important that outdoor recreationists participate in that process because the Forest Service is under extreme pressure to minimize access and mechanized recreation.
The article below captures the concerns and frustrations that many are experiening with the process the current Administration has engaged to determine how people will access Forest Service public lands in the future.

Forest Service proposal sees people as problem
By Audrey Hudson
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Walking through the forest is harmful to the environment, according to
a proposed rule by the Forest Service that critics say would restrict public
access through the nation's forests.
"Unwanted or nonnative plant species can be transported on vehicles and
clothing by users of [forest] roads, ultimately displacing native species,"
said the proposal printed Friday in the Federal Register.
The proposed regulation would establish guidelines for how the agency
manages its transportation system and sets maintenance and new road-building
priorities. However critics say the broad language could halt all future
road building.
"These people want to return the forest to the conditions existing
before Europeans landed on the continent," said Sen. Frank H. Murkowski,
Alaska Republican and chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources
Committee.
The agency's proposal said that traveling through the forests harms the
ground and the animals living there, so some roads should be closed and
greater balance given between public access and environmental concerns when
deciding if a new road should be built.
"Roads allow people to travel into previously difficult or impossible
to access areas, resulting in indirect impacts such as ground and habitat
disturbance, increased pressure on wildlife species, increased litter,
sanitation needs and vandalism, and increased frequency of human-caused
fires," the proposal said.
Sen. Larry E. Craig, chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural
Resources subcommittee on forests and public land management, said his
concern was that an injection of new-age thinking in forest management would
result in ice-age management.
"I, for one, am reluctant to spend my next visit to a national forest
sleeping in a cave, merely to assure that we are replicating pre-settlement
conditions," the Idaho Republican said in a written statement.
If the proposal becomes a regulation, it would make it nearly
impossible to build new roads to access the forests, critics said.
"Even if it is implemented with the rule of reason, the language of the
rule is so amorphous that anyone who wants to stop a road from being built
has more than enough ammunition to do it," said Mark Rey, a senior staffer
for the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
"In the hands of litigators, these regulations could be the road to
ruin for our national forests," Mr. Rey said.
According to the Forest Service, recreation use has climbed to an
all-time high of 13.6 million vehicles per day on forest roads.
The proposal would "shift the emphasis from transportation development
to managing environmentally sound access."
"It's not surprising they look at the invention of the wheel as the
greatest threat to the national forests," Mr. Murkowski said.
"They're doing everything possible to save the forests, except take a
science class," Mr. Murkowski said.
Critics of the Forest Service say the agency is putting forth several
regulations regarding roads and forest use that will lead to the creation of
de facto wilderness designations.
The controversial proposal would severely restrict recreational use
such as mountain biking, snowmobiling, skiing, all-terrain vehicles and rock
climbing.
Gaining access to the forest to fight forest fires is also a concern.
"Now the Clinton administration wants to regulate walking and wearing
clothing," said Rob Gordon, executive director of the Wilderness Institute.
Mr. Craig said the proposals and ongoing public process is like
"inviting everyone in a crowded movie theater to help them review a movie
after they have yelled fire."
"The Clinton administration has already managed to antagonize and
convince many, if not the majority, of public land users in the rural West
that all they are about is throwing the people off the public lands," Mr.
Craig said.

Yes...you are in the right place. Head out northwest from the single dune.
The trail will lead you through a pretty nice wash...probably a 3-4 rating
in a couple of spots. You should have seen my FSJ traverse the
v-notch....you will know what I mean when you see it. Not too tough for a
little JEEP but real tough for the full-size, especially given the big rock
in the middle of the path once you clear the "V". There is a chicken trail
around the wash as well. If you follow the trail, it finally ends up on
Sun-Valley Parkway. Sun Valley Parkway turns into Bell road if you head
northeast and connect to I-10 if you head southwest.
Maybe we should set up a trip to this area for the whole group.

No, he wasn't hurt at all. It was a slow roll over, so no thrashing
involved. They righted the little Samurai with only about 5 people
pushing and had it fired up and back on its way within about 5 minutes.

My wife and I were at last years Canyon de Chelly also (is that when you
went?) It was verrrrry windy on the first day. We had a great time also.
May go again this year of at the worst, next year. I want to do Moab also.

No, we went 3 years ago. It was very cold and we weren't prepared for the
temperatures. It rained the whole time. I almost bailed, but decided I
would stick it out. I was glad I did. The canyon floor turned into
quicksand by the second day. I was leading one of the small groups and
must've created enough suction to have the CJ behind me get stuck. We have a
hilarious picture with the driver sitting in his jeep with mud half-way up
his wheels. It took 2 jeeps, lots of people and a winch to finally get him
out. Wouldn't have missed it for the world!

It is time again. The party will be on the March 25th at the Arizona Center

been; The Beer Festival is where many micro breweries come together for a
beer tasting weekend. Last year there were 83 microbreweries represented. You

Sounds like a great idea!!! Does the wash start out kind of small, almost
like running through a little quad track, then get bigger?
When do you think it would be good to get a group together? Next weekend I
will have very limited time as I will be putting up shelves in my garage and
the first or second weekend in April I have to help my parents move.
How about if we do a Tax Relief run the weekend of April 15th?
Just a thought.

Just my 2 cents worth but I'd go for the 2in budget boost locker and gears.
If you go over two inches there are reports of drive line vibs on the newer

It was sort of goldish

of the hardest obstacles on the course.

This is a picture of Sniper HUNG UP on an obstacle! Granted, the
picture is from quite a distance, but take my word for it. It really is
Sniper. And he was unable to finish this obstacle in the time
allotted. Everyone that made it through this obstacle took a line to
the right. The sniper group chose the left line where no one had made
it. Just goes to show that without a good spotter, your equipment is
worthless.

Just my 2 cents worth but I'd go for the 2in budget boost locker and gears.
If you go over two inches there are reports of drive line vibs on the newer
XJ's, www.naxja.org has a tech bord and they are all XJ owners. Check it
out..
Good luck...

OK, so I've got this new 2000 Cherokee Sport, and I want to start to modify
it. I have about $900.00 to play with. I thought I'd put a Rusty's 4.5 inch
lift on it with the upper and lower articulating arms. I wouldn't have money
for rims and tires, or a gear change and a locker of some sort for almost a
year.
...Or... Skip the lift for now, do the rear locker with stock gears, and add
a 4x4 custom fabrication dual tube rock rail and a 4.5'x 5'x6" Con-FERR one
piece welded roof rack.
I smashed my driver's side rocker panel (no too bad, but noticeable) this
weekend at the crawler competition. My first ding! ...I baptize thee in the
name of the Dirt, the rocks, and the Trees...
I know that either choice would improve my chances of not getting any more
damage to my truck, but with the moderate wheeling I plan on doing, which
would you guys (and gals) choose?
Also, my account at jeeps unlimited is not allowing me to post messages, but
I'll get it fixed ...

some houses thorugh the curves an found a single dune.

Outdoor Enthusiasts:
