TJ;

Tell me more about your '75 CJ. I helped my dad purchase a '75 CJ5 almost 25
years ago. Now that he has a TJ and an YJ, he's giving me the CJ5 (part mine
anyway). The price is right - free! It's still almost 100% stock. Since
this will mainly be a trail rig, I'm gathering ideas and making mental plans
for it. He's getting the tranny fixed before it's mine.

It appears add-ons for the older CJ's are getting harder to find. What lift
are you putting on? What other mods have you made / recommend? Anything I
should I avoid? I know these are general questions - I'm just anxious to get
going in it. Can't take the Tahoe offroad like a Jeep. I've owned a Jeep for
23 of the past 25 years. Unfortunately, the last two have been without :( a
Jeep.

On Feb 26th, a group of 5 Tucson Rough Riders made a run on the Upper
Woodpecker trail. It was a great day of wheeling and we messed around on the
trails until the sun was going down. On the way back we discovered that
wheeling in the rocks is much safer than driving on the highway. It was
about 8pm and we were heading down hwy 79 south of Florence about 5 miles,
when a pickup truck ran a stop sigh and crossed into the path of our Jeep
convoy. The lead Jeep, driven by Sean Perkins in his 99 TJ, crashed into it.
No one was hurt but the truck was totaled and the Jeep was banged up pretty
bad. Both front fenders and the hood were wiped out, one front tire was cut
and the front axel housing broken. The front frame (Sean had removed his
front bumper) and Warn winch took most of the blow, but were not damaged at
all. Just a few scratches and some blue paint were all they got. The air
bags did not deploy in the wreck and he was going pretty fast, about 45 when
he hit the truck.
The other driver was an Indian woman with no drivers license, no insurance,
in a borrowed truck, and was drunk.
Sean is the owner of EXTREME OFF ROAD MOTOR SPORTS in Tucson, and had done a
lot of upgrades to his TJ. He had planned to enter the Rock Crawling
contest, but is now going to have to wait a month or more to have the damage
repaired.
His email address is, jeep33s@h..., if anyone wants to send him a
note of sympathy.

Larry,

Sounds like a good deal; can't get much cheaper than the price you're
getting. You have another advantage in knowing the type of driver that
has been using the Jeep for the last 25 years.

On the 72-75 CJs, the frame was an open C-channel for much of it's
length, which can lead to some serious weakness, including a bad habit of
cracking around the front crossmember and at the rear hanger for the
front springs.
Check those areas out pretty well, they should be weldable if there are
cracks developing.

Parts aren't necessarily harder to find, a lot of them are still
available from the same sources, its just that the 76-later CJs outnumber
the rest, and the YJ/TJ add-on sales projections give them priority in
the catalogs. Of course, since it's a Jeep, it can be modified to fit
any number of 'other' vehicle accessories with a little creativity.

What engine/drivetrain does it have? Has it been running the whole time,
or has it been sitting garaged for awhile?

Thanks for the info Jim. I'll be sure to check the frame, especially the
areas you mentioned. In 25 years, it's rarely been offroad, trails rated a 3
at the worse. It was mostly a tow vehicle for all of the motorhome trips.
It's always been running and the only modification is 'add-a-leaf''s, new
paint and rag top. It has the original 304 engine, but I forget about the
drivetrain. It was the hard top Renegade model and the original springs ride
REAL HARD. Hopefully, he should hand it over to me within the next couple
weeks. I know I'll have a million questions once it's in the front yard.

Any suggestions on what to do to strengthen the frame? Or just keep an eye
on it?

I laugh at my dad. Since the CJ rode so hard, he bought a hard top YJ as his
new tow-vehicle. But he's too lazy to take the top off in the summer for
around town - so he also bought a new soft top TJ for around town. I'll
probably get them in 25 years :)

Henry Lamb is one of the best informed individuals I know concerning world
events and world governments. He has attended the United Nations summit
meetings for years and relates the forces coming from that source to what is
happening throughout this country.

For more of his writings refer to his
web page: http://www.freedom.org or ecologic@freedom.org

(Webster definition added: converting to the principles of fascism. Stands
for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader
involving forcible suppression of opposition. Clarice)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Henry Lamb
© 2000 WorldNetDaily.com

If land and its resources are, in fact, the source of production, America
is in a heap of trouble.
The first, defining characteristic of a socialist country is government
ownership of the sources of production. The first, defining characteristic
of a fascist country is private ownership of the sources of production,
under the control of centralized government.

More than 40 percent of the land in America is owned by governments, and
the rest of it is controlled by the government. Does that make America a
"fascilist" country?

It's not enough to own 40 percent of the land. The Clinton/Gore
administration is pushing the George Miller-Don Young, bi-partisan
Conservation and Reinvestment Act (CARA), which will set aside as much as
$3 billion per year so governments can buy more land.

We, the taxpayers, are being forced to finance the transformation of
America from a land in which the sources of production are owned by private
individuals, to a country where the sources of production are owned by the
government. Until the transition is complete, government is extending its
regulatory tentacles across every square inch of land that remains in
private hands.

The term "wetlands" emerged in our vocabulary, not from a land use policy
enacted by elected representatives, but from a mangled distortion of agency
rule-making, and consent decrees arising out of lawsuits filed by
environmental extremists. For years, the policy was enforced under the
authority of the 1972 Clean Water Act, a law which did not contain the word
"wetlands."

The wetlands policy, conceived and implemented by bureaucrats, gave the
federal government jurisdiction over an estimated 200 million acres of
private property. This policy applied only to wetlands larger than three
acres.

On March 3rd, the Corps of Engineers released a new 172-page proposed rule
that reduces this exemption to one-half acre. Private property brought
under federal jurisdiction by this new rule could easily double.

On Feb. 22, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released a new proposed rule
on Watershed Resource Management. This bureaucratic expansion of the rules
has the potential to plunder private property, although it is presented as
a measure for public land.

Representative Helen Chenoweth is fighting efforts in the Senate to add an
anti-property rights amendment to the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations
Bill that would appropriate $5.5 million for a new Habitat Conservation
Plan in Idaho. This test run would let private property owners
"voluntarily" agree to restrict certain land use, in exchange for
assurances that no future regulatory enforcement action would be imposed.
In the fine print, however, we find the term "adaptive management," which
means the government could change the rules anytime it wished, once the
property is signed on, but the property owner would have no such option.

Bruce Babbitt is running from one end of the country to the other, looking
for more land that the President can designate as national monuments,
further blocking the public from public land.

Oblivious to the guarantees lodged in the history of legislation relating
to RS2477 rights of way, the U.S. Forest service is busy closing public
roads on federal land, assuring that the public can have no use of public
property. Private land owners whose property is surrounded by federal
lands, are harassed, and even jailed, for driving on an RS2477 road without
a Forest Service permit. This harassment is called "grooming a willing
seller."

There are literally dozens of regulations, initiatives, programs, decrees,
executive orders, and inter-agency agreements that give the agencies of
government the power to control the use of virtually any, and every square
inch of land in America.

The regulatory activity has intensified dramatically in this last year of
the Clinton/Gore reign. They want to get as much land under government
control as possible, just in case Republicans storm the Bastille in
November.

It will take a complete house cleaning and thorough fumigation at 1600
Pennsylvania Avenue to reverse this march toward a fascilist nation. No
candidate should be elected to any office at any level of government, who
has not first signed the Freedom 21 Pledge and has the backbone to live by
it while in office.

Bob,
I may have a line of troubleshooting you can try on the carb if you
haven't been able to get that fixed yet. There has been a thread on
rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys recently with the same issue on a 258. I'm
not sure waht the reason was, but the two guys that were most involved
with the issue finally solved sputtering by blocking the return line to
the fuel tank. Ulimately the line was removed and blocked, but htey
first checked it by pinching off the returnline, which immediately
helped.

Different carb, same possible solution.

Good luck,

If they weren't run by a group of alleged boneheads, I'd recommend your
friend check out
http://home.off-road.com/~ifsja/tech/index.htm the tech info there is
very good. I'm not sure if the staff took all the Jeep info when they
defected, but check out www.jeeptech.com for the same info. I noticed
there are still a lot of broken links on that site though.

Failing that, check with some of our "bigger brethren" like "Lefty"
Sullivan and George Andrews, both of them are SJ owners. Yes, they were
available in 2wd; no, they are no longer in production; there are some
for sale around the East Valley in Phoenix right now, but I have no
direct info available on where/how much. J10 is the common name, also
look for J20, J2000 and J4000. Wagoneer, Honcho, and Gladiator are all
names that come to mind if searching online for one.

James

Thanks very much for all your help. I did solve the problem but it turned
out not to be the carb. A friend of mine thought it might be sticking valves
due to the Jeep sitting for a few months so I went and got some upper engine
lube additive for the gas tank. I used it and took the CJ on all three trips
to the rock crawl event. On Friday and Saturday, no more problem and she is
running good as new. WHO KNEW? Well, the carb and ignition are like new.

Can't remember who...but someone on the 3/4 Coves trip had a Honcho for
sale! Whoever you were...speak now! Lefty Sullivan would know more about the
J-trucks then I would. I would also recommend you check out "The Story of
JEEP" by Patrick Foster....the book seemed to have all the detail would
would need.

I was judging at Course 2obstacle 7 so didn't have a chance to see the
rest of the competition, but I heard it was awesome! Please post
pictures as soon as possible. Had a great time at the event. Camping was
great too! Thanks to all the AZVJCers that came out.

Bill! Next time, don't set us down in the middle of yahoo city! (Just
kidding! The campsite wasn't that bad :-) just a little noisy.

My daughter and I have gone on 2 jeep jamborees, and they're GREAT fun!
There are all different trail difficulties, Rubicon being the most difficult.
It was a good way for me to start to learn how to handle my jeep off road.

On our Canyon de Chelly trip, there were 75 jeeps--no two alike. We made
lots of friends. And, I let my daughter (then 11 years old) drive the jeep
in the Canyon. (after all, what's she going to run into?)

Check out http://jeepjamboreeusa.com/

It has all the trips, trail ratings, etc. It's a good family time.

What trail ratings are there? I am a novice(that is giving me too much
credit) when it comes to rock crawling. My experience is all dunes, mud,
hills etc... I only have a 2" spacer lift with 31x10.5 tires so I would
have concerns trying some of the higher rated trails.

Thanks

Soccer Moms, Rock Crawlers Unite: Goodyear Pulls Out All Stops

PHOENIX, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The company that pioneered the concept of
puncture-resistant tire sidewalls for the off-road enthusiast is pulling out
all the stops to fill orders for the innovative new product.

Shipments of four Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tire sizes -- 30x9.50R15,
32x11.50R15, 33x12.50R15 and 35x12.50R15 -- have been released to retailers,
with five sizes on the way.

``It's clear that consumer demand initially will exceed the supply of this
product,'' said Ron Wells, marketing manager for light-truck tires. ``We've
been inundated with calls and e-mails. We've never seen anything like
this.''

In addition, interest has gone beyond hardcore off-roaders. ``I believe the
aggressive stance of this tire strikes a responsive chord among pickup-
truck and SUV owners. They want a tire that fills the wheel wells and makes
a statement linked to their vehicle. We fully expect sales to move beyond
the off-road market.

``Our retailers seem to be catching on that this is not just an off-road
tire. Despite promoting the tire at the Goodyear Extreme Rock Crawling
Championship here this weekend, we've found the tire is as attractive to the
'soccer mom' as it is to the weekend enthusiast who goes rock crawling on
the weekends,'' Wells said.

Looks are part of the tire's mystique, Wells said. An aggressive tread
pattern and notched sidewalls convey unbridled traction. A breakthrough
Durawall tire sidewall construction features a high-tech silica compound,
three polyester plies and tread elements that extend down the sidewall.

First impressions are vital in the tire industry. ``Everyone who has seen
the tire has gone 'ga-ga' over it. Performance notwithstanding, people are
attracted to this tire based solely on its raw, brute looks,'' Wells said.

Webster's defines ``ga-ga'' as wildly enthusiastic.
