Subject: Jeep Tech: Dana 30 Axles

Hello all,

Last weekend the trail claimed yet another front Axle U-Joint, taking the
axle with it.
This has happened to me several times (this is my 4th) in the past few
years.
Needless to say I'm getting a little tired of rummaging through bone yards
to find a
replacement axle. Part of the problem is I'm running an old Power Lock diff
in the
front, which doesn't always lock up. With the tax return due back any day
now,
I will be changing out the Power Lock, in favor of a Detroit. Since I'm
also looking
at finding a replacement axle, I'm thinking about using an after-market kit
that uses
stronger axles and a larger (Dana 44?) u-joint. I don't remember who makes
the kit,
I just recall seeing it either in a magazine or catalog.

My concern is this: By installing the stronger axles, am I just moving the
"weak link"
somewhere else (i.e. Ring/Pinion). I know my dad used to run a Power Lock
in his
front, and used to break U-Joints and Hubs. Now he has a Detroit, and the
Warn
Heavy Duty Hubs, so far he hasn't broken anything, but he is still using the
stock
axles. I'm interested in the stronger axles because I have to locate an
axle already,
I have the money, why not go for the stronger unit. However, I don't want
to do this,
if I'm risking breaking other, more expensive parts.

Has anyone installed this in their Jeep, or have any advice for me?
Thanks in advance,

Mike Chatfield

Hey Al,

It's because you are such a good person!
We know you would be right there for one of us
in the same situation. We mourn the Blue Ox's passing
and I will always remember driving it at the coves.
See you on the trails.

Mike,

First, I would think that a Power Lock that doesn't lock up would
*not* lead to broken axles since you'd be essentially open and torque
would be diverted to the wheel with the least amount of traction.

As for the axle kits, I don't know if you're talking about a CJ or YJ
Dana 30. If YJ, the 95 YJ's with ABS came with axles that used a larger
(ie Dana 44) u-joint and they are completely interchangeable. They are
hard to locate used, but can be had for $75-$100 per side. I believe
some XJ's had these shafts too. I think this would be a lot cheaper than
those "kits".

I believe Superior Axle makes the axle kit that you are referring to. I seem to
remember it being about $500 total for both sides from 4Wheeler's Supply. As
far as strength, I don't think the R&P is going to be your concern. I'd look
more at your hubs. You didn't mention what kind of Jeep you have, but I would
opt to swap to the 6 bolt hubs (if you have the 5 bolt stockers still there).
You can do this pretty cheap by getting the inner hubs from a pre-'79 (I think)
CJ that has the 6 bolt hubs. Then purchase some 6 bolt Warn Premium locking
hubs (@$80). This should help to remedy hub breakage. You also didn't mention
what size tires you are running. I guess the next weak link would be the axles
themselves. Only way out of that one is a D44, etc, etc. But overall I would
think that going with the Superior Axles with the 297 ujoint (D44 size) and
swapping to a 6 bolt hub would help a lot. But if your running 35's or larger,
definately should think about swapping to D44 or D60. Take these suggestions
as you will......

Here are the comments from Phil Smith, a very respected poster (and Jeeper)
in the JU forum. Most of the folks there pay attention to what Phil says.
If memory serves me correctly, he usually leads several of the trail runs at
Moab during Easter Jeep Safari. He says:

-------------------------------------------------------
The Dana 30 axle is a reasonably good axle for the front of Jeep TJs. It is
a standard cut axle, which means the gear strength will be at it's maximum
when the Jeep is backing up, which is what puts the most stress on the front
axle components. This is an improvement over the reverse cut Dana 30 found
in YJs. The U-joints have also been upgraded to Dana 44 U-joints, which is
another big improvement.

I broke a front axle u-joint in my '97 TJ, and another front axle u-joint in
my '98 TJ. Both breakages occured while running 35s, and LockRight lockers;
and both occured on a high traction surface (slickrock).

I have seen LOTS of people listing a front Dana 44 axle on their "wish
list", or "five year plan". My question is WHY? Do you folks have an extra 3
grand burning a whole in your pocket or something?

As long as the only part you are breaking is the u-joint there is absolutely
NO reason to upgrade to a Dana 44. Even after spending 3 grand on a front
Dana 44 you're going to still have the same Dana 44 u-joint you were
breaking with the Dana 30; so your net gain in strength is ZERO. It's the
weak link that is most likely to fail first, and both axles have the same
weak link. Now if you were breaking ring and pinion gears, or even axle
shafts, it would be worth upgrading to a Dana 44. Thus far I have met very
few people that have broke anything other than an occaisional u-joint with
their Dana 30s. I can't say that I have actually met anyone that has broken
the shafts or gears, although I'm sure they exist. I mean we have proof on
this forum that people can break just about anything ... case in point:
front upper control arms.

Save your money folks. Why not spend it on a road trip to a four wheeling
destination you've always wanted to attend instead.

Stu,

Thanks, this gives me the information I need. I'm currently
running an '82 CJ-5. I did not know that the "new" jeeps
came with a stronger axle setup in the front. Now that I
know this, it appears to me that the manufacturer decided
the U-Joint was exceptionally weak. Also by the fact that
the U-Joints still break under heavy load relieve my worries
about moving the weak link; instead the weak link will be a
little bit stronger. Too bad I can't pull the axles from a
TJ; it'd cost me less I imagine.

Thanks,

Mike

Roger,

Thanks for the info.

The Power Lock does lock up, but not until the "light"
wheel starts to spin, then when it does kick in, the
"heavy" wheel gets an overload of torque and the
U-Joint explodes.

I've got an '82 CJ-5, with the narrow axles. Its
a shame I can't use the axles from a newer jeep
since that would save me money. But with this
information, I know that installing stronger axles
and U-Joint won't move the weak link, only make
it stronger.

Thanks,

Mike

I don't know about this specific product, but experience has taught me
not to buy anything from Steel Horse.

Bestop (who _makes_ the OEM top) offers a replacement top. You can get
it through the usual mail order (like http://thinkjeep.com or
http://www.4wd.com ) or a local place like Desert Rat can order it for
you (sometimes they even have them in stock.) It'll cost a bit more
(like $265 or so instead of $240) but it's probably worth it to avoid
Steel Horse.

4x4 power recommends the Warn axles with the Dana 30. They are stronger
axles and ujoints. The Detroit is probally the stongest unit to put in
the 30. You didn't say if you have an XJ/MJ or the CJ/TJ/YJ but the
XJ/MJ Dana 30 is about 30% stronger in the ring gear as it is a reverse
rotation unit where as the others are normal rotatation which cause
driving on the coast side of the ring gear. (Not sure which an ZJ has).

Well, I'll be in a big green tent! White Grinnell Fire Protection truck (kinda hard to miss with the rainbow stripes). I have a Blue trailer for the JEEP and a blue 1955 Willys CJ3B, if you happen to catch me in camp. Linda, if you're reading, describe your rig. I know about the Dodge, and the ZJ......... Maybe we need a big banner on your Motorhome!!

What kind of vehicles/rv's should I be looking for? And where is the
"Jamboree" campground again? I kind of ignored those messages when they
came around since I wasn't going to be camping. ;)

Exit Miller road south. Take first left heading east. Take first left north
under I-10. Proceed ~1-2 miles...there are dunes to play on. then head off
in the northwest direction....pretty good trail through a wash.

The stock rims on the vehicle you mentioned are all 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern - so they're interchangeable. I believe stock backspacing is also standard.

Hello,

Just wanted to know if a stock XJ rim has the same bolt pattern as a YJ, i.e. are the rims interchangable between vehicles. Thanks.

Yup, in fact most years they used exactly the same wheels.

i dunno how similar "his" fenders are to a CJ, but when i trimmed mine
i just took the fenders off. then i drew a line with a pen where i
wanted to cut right on the fenders, plugged in the jigsaw(with a
steel-cutting blade of course) and went to town.
