Len,
You might want to drop a note to the Surgeon General's office and request
they put a warning label on the TJs. It might read:
"The Surgeon General has determined that brief exposure to a TJ may be
hazardous to your budget." LOL!

Larry,
Start at http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/cj-2a.htm Even though
Off-road.com is run by a bunch of alleged fools (rental car in the dunes,
etc), they do seem to have some good info about Jeeps. Most of it about
the CJ5 is correct from what I've learned elsewhere, so I would hope the
CJ2 page is similar. After you've had fun there, check out the Links
section on http://azvjc.web.com, there are a few old CJ2 sites linked off
the webrings there.

Subject: [az_vjc] Bar-BQ Ox, Offers to Help!!
Thank you all for your kind words and offers to help reincarnate my Jeep. I
am very touched and amazed at the generosity you have displayed by offering
to help me. The truth is that my Jeep is no more. There is little left to
rebuild from. I have a frame and roll cage, some skid plates and the front
axles/diff. but that is about it. The tub was never that great to begin
with and I don,t know if any or much of the drive line can be saved. I am
sure that the engine is toast, and I imagine that the seals and such in the
tranny and transfer case are melted. I think that the rearend is salvagable
but feel certain that the inner and outer seals are melted to the axles. I
have not yet started to do anything with it yet. I blame my delay on the
weather but quite honestly I just can't bring myself to deal with it yet.
It
is insane how much of our selves we invest in these vehicles. I had no idea
how strong a bond I had with this Jeep untill I was watching it burn. The
last three days have sucked. I fully intend to replace the Blue Ox when I
can but I have strong doubts that it can be rebuilt.
Sorry for running on. Thanks again for your offers of help. This is an
incredible fraternity this brother/sister hood of Wheelers we belong to.
You
guys are great. See you on the trail very soon.

Subject: AZ Jeep spotted in Four Wheeler
Those of you who made the Ajax Mine run back in November probably
remember seeing Jess in his SJ Cherokee, crawling up and down everything
he could while practicing for the trip to the Warn Rockcrawling
Championships in Johnson Valley, CA.
His Jeep made it into Four Wheelers April 2000 issue, unfortunately as
more of an oddity to the staff. For those of you that followed it, the
Warn Rockcrawl Champs were a pair of custom-built rock buggies with 2 1/2
ton axles and more toys than you can shake a stick at. Four Wheeler saw
Jess' SJ, and got a shot of it "holding it's own pretty well" for an "old
school" Cherokee.
Ought to be pretty similar results this weekend out in Florence Junction,
I imagine.

Subject: Re: 33" tires on stock rims...
Jason,
Like Linda said, Cherokees came with 15x6, 15x7, or 15x8 rims depending
what tire option package was purchased. Without lifting it, the largest
tire you'll be able to fit is usually a 30". 235/75R15 (about a 29"
tire) will fit and usually won't rub, 30" may rub, and anything larger is
pretty much going to need a lift unless you drive in straight lines
everywhere you go.
The best way to verify your rim width is going to be by looking. There
are too many options and variables, and it only takes a few minutes to
see for sure. I have 15x6 stock rims, and the size is marked inside the
rim. Most rims will be marked similarly. If your spare uses the ame
rim, check it since the inside faces the inside of the cargo area.
Differences in rim width will change the way the tires fit. I have BFG
235/75R15s on my 89 Cherokee. My bro-in-law had the same tires on the
stock 15x7 rims on his 90 Cherokee. Mine rub on the lower left control
arm at full left turn. His will turn lock-to-lock, mainly because of the
rim width. The extra inch of width means his sidewalls are straighter,
and the tires don't protect the rim quite so much.
33" tires are also going to put a strain on the axles. There are people
out there who drive and wheel regularly with the same axle setup and
larger tires, but they are risking some serious damage to the axle that
way. Check out www.naxja.org and ask the same question again. The North
American XJ Association Tech Forum has some similar questions asked all
the time.
Good luck,
Jim Yucca-man@j...

Subject: fenders
I, umm, have this "friend" who, uhh, was wondering what would be the best
tool to use to trim some sheet metal off of, for example, maybe a '92
Cherokee? Also, is there anything that should be done to prepare the newly
exposed bare metal edge to keep corrosion at bay? I know I definitely want
to nip off the part just behind the front bumper and below the turn signlas,
but you never know what a small project like that could turn into. I removed
my flares and realized that there is a slight waxy buildup that makes a great
line that I, err, I mean "he" could follow. I'm sure someone here has
trimmed their fenders before, and any info I could get would be greatly
appreciated.

We should all meet as a group somewhere. How about at one of the camp grounds

9:30. So we should meet around say 8am and head out around 8:30 to find a

I've had a soft top on my YJ for 6 years and havn't had any serious leaks, I'd suggest finding an upholstry repair shop, like Kustom Trim in Tucson, and have them repair the tears. You can re-waterproof it then with scotchguard or maybe sealskin.

Subject: Re: soft tops
The only previous experience I had with a soft top was with my Suzuki
Samurai (now have a 97 TJ too!!!). It lasted about 3 years. I also lived
in an apartment complex so it was outside alot.
The weather will reak havoc on the soft top. One thing I will recommend, do
not, I repeat DO NOT use amor all to make it look new. I tried using amor
all and it only deteriated faster. It says protectant, but it you are not
willing, especially in the summer, to put in on, on a daily basis it will
shorten the life span of you top. As the chemicals dry out they also dry
out the material, making it crack and become brittal.
If you have a garage and keep it indoors, look for shade from trees to park
under while you are away from home and keep it out of direct sun light, when
you can, while at work and such you can probably get 5 or 6, maybe even 7
years out of them.
It will also depend on the manufacturer you purchase the next top from as to
how long that one will last.
As for repairs, I have always used duct tape on the inside to hold the tear
in place, use a needle and thread to sew it up, stitch as close to the tear
as possible, use lots of stitches at the ends and just beyond the ends of
the tear. Then use either a fabric glue or a sealer and apply it to the
tear, ensure you cover the stiches and just alittle past, be sure to smooth
it out a little. At this time you can remove the duct tape from the inside
and apply a very thin coat of the glue or sealer to the inside and let dry.
This will work for most small tears.
Hope this helps.

Besttop recommends that you use iron on patches, like for blue jeans.
Bondex was the name brand, I believe.
I haven't actually tried it yet, but have been told it works halfway
decent.

I believe it's called a "super 35 kit" and upgrades to the same strength as a

wallet hasn't allowed such a thing to happen, I heppened to remember the info.

I've had a soft top on my YJ for 6 years and havn't had any serious leaks, I'd suggest finding an upholstry repair shop, like Kustom Trim in Tucson, and have them repair the tears. You can re-waterproof it then with scotchguard or maybe sealskin.

Almost all the jeep staff has left off-road.com All the jeep tech
stuff like that is now housed at the authors site (www.jeeptech.com)
and the new URL for that article is http://www.jeeptech.com/models/cj-2
a.htm If you have any questions, Ive done a lot of work on early CJ's
including flatfenders and can likely point you in the right direction.

Chris

Besttop recommends that you use iron on patches, like for blue jeans.
Bondex was the name brand, I believe.
I haven't actually tried it yet, but have been told it works halfway
decent.

We should all meet as a group somewhere. How about at one of the camp grounds
near the course? I hear that the "driving/crawling" starts at about 9 or
9:30. So we should meet around say 8am and head out around 8:30 to find a
good place to watch from. Now........where is the meeting place? I'm going
to ask someone else to offer that up.

Subject: New BFG M/T's - no plans
I shot BFG an e-mail asking if/when they plan on coming out w/ their
upgraded MT. To my surprise, a company rep called me on this, and advised
that there are no plans to put the prototype into production. Bummer - but
it was a pleasant surprise that they took the time to call me on it.
Thought I'd pass on the info.
