Subject: magic muffler
I decided to put on a new exhaust on my 98 TJ. I called magic muffler of
Flagstaff around 10: 30 a.m. and talked to junior, he told me he could
install a flowmaster muffler and a free flow cat on my jeep for $210 I asked
him when he could do the work. he said bring it down at 11:30 and he could
have me out in an hour. I arrived at 10:15 he immediately got my jeep in the
bay and they had the exhaust installed and i was out the door in 40 minutes.
Everything looked great to me and the jeep runs perfect, and now it can
breathe a little easier. Thanx to brian Harmon for recomending them to me. I
would recomend
just thought I should throw my 2 cents in ....

Subject: Lockers
Hi all,
After a weekend of offroading I have decided I need a locker for my rear. I
have an 99TJ with a Dana 35 rear. I am considering a mid-priced Detroit
locker, but am not sure. I have mixed things about Lock-Right. What is the
best locker for the money? I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on one,
but don't want a POS. I am looking to spend between $200 to $350 on one.
What should I buy? Also, how much does it cost to put one in?
Thanx

Subject: Gloeco (Arizona Drivelines)
I ordered a CV-style driveline from Gloeco (they're now called Arizona
Drivelines). I didn't specify what type and ended up with one that was
about as beefy as my stock front driveline. After comparing mine to my
buddies' rock crawler type drivelines, I became worried that what I got
wasn't beefy enough. I went back to Gloeco and talked to Oscar. He
offered to step me up to an intermediate shaft for an additional $75
or to the RockCrawler shaft for another $120-140. I instructed him
to step me up to the intermediate shaft. When I went to pick up the
shaft, there was no charge. He just wanted me to be happy. I call that
great customer service.

Subject: NO to the Roadless Initiative!
Dear Mr. Dombeck
I am writing to you to express my opinion and urge you and your organization
reverse your position on the Roadless Initiative. I agree that we must keep
our public lands clean, but creating laws which prohibit use of public lands
is not the answer. Such laws would only serve to keep the RESPONSIBLE
off-roaders out - the irresponsible off-road drivers would still abuse the
public lands because they are, by definition, irresponsible. Keeping the
RESPONSIBLE off-road drivers out of our public lands will only increase the
problems, because it is the RESPONSIBLE off-road drivers who pick up the
trash, repair the trails, and work to conserve our environment. Education,
not litigation, is the answer to this issue.
I am an active member of the largest OHV club in Arizona, and last week my
children and I participated in a VOLUNTARY cleanup effort of a local OHV
area. Our local club is not the only organization sponsoring outdoors
cleanup activities. A quick internet search for the words '4x4' and
'cleanup' resulted in over 150 site hits. I have included several below for
your perusal.

lands open for RESPONSIBLE use.

Brian,
Definately let me know what you think of the R.E. kit, I need to get my
T-case back up where it belongs after my lift and theirs is the best deal
I've heard of yet. Currie has a fixed yolk and C.V. joint driveshaft set for
about $550. The problem is if I go with that one I'll need to get the
installation done by a shop somewhere and that will be another $225, if this
is as easy as it sounds I may be able to do it myself and save on the kit
and on the install, which means I can get my new skidplate, YEAH :-)

As far as lockers go I only have experience with Lock-rites, (I have a 93YJ
with a Dana 35C in back and a Dana 30 in front), but I am very pleased and
impressed with theirs. I installed my rear locker in about 1 1/2 hours and
it was a very straight forward and simple process, the front took about 4
hours as i needed to remove the carrier due to the size of my ring gear,
(it's a 4.10). The cost is right, about $300 for the rear and $220 for the
front. Since I put them in I haven't had any problems and only good times
with them, I think they are great.

I just installed a PowerTrax NoSlip locker (the latest line from the makers of LockRite) in the front of my 98TJ. I got to test them out this Sunday at the Coves and was very impressed. They are in the $ range you are looking for and are easily installed. I didn't do my own but that shouldn't sway you. I hear that in most cases it is easy. I also ordered a rear PowerTrax NoSlip for my Dana35 but they shipped the wrong one. It should be in this week.
By the way, one of the great features of this unit is it's total lack of noise when in 2wd. There is no racheting or clanking under normal use. Sometimes a clang appears during the transition from forward to reverse, but only when you are also turning. I love them and can really tell the difference. Peter Wirch of the club would probably relay the same to you since he just got a front set installed also. You might want to talk with hime before you self install.

Jake,
You might look into the new axles that some company is selling for the Dana
35rear end. I believe that are bigger diameter 1.31 and higher spline count. I
cannot remember which company is selling them but you must buy a certain carrier
and locker to match these axles. I am sure some magazine add hunting will pay
off. The stock Dana 35 axles tend to fail when attached to a locker when powered
by the 4.0 I-6
Some in the club may know the correct vendor.

Subject: No to the Roadless Initative
Dear Mr. Dombeck,
I am writing you to express my concern over your organization's support of
the Roadless Initiative. I understand that you believe that the majority of
the people of this country also support this initiative. I am writing to
tell you that this is not true. I do not want to see millions of acres of
our land, maintained by our tax dollars, closed to multiple use access.
I realize that I am but a single voice and a single letter, but I assure you
that I am not alone as I write this. The OHV community supports practices
such as "Tread Lightly", "Pack it in, Pack it out", and "Adopt-A-Trail". In
addition to this, our clubs actively coach our members, new and old, to be
responsible OHV users. Education is the key ingredient to keeping our lands
open and available for us, for our children, and for those generations yet to
come.
Closing access to public lands is a "Band-Aid" solution. The real solution
is to educate users and let all of us enjoy and share the lands of our
country.
I belong to an active 4x4 club and am proud to say that some 20+ vehicles
participated in a voluntary clean up of a local OHV area just this past
weekend. We were not asked by your forest rangers, of the Mesa Ranger
District, to do this. We approached them and I am happy to report that they
were receptive to our offer to help keep the forestlands clean.
My young daughter and I have shared many off-road trips and have made this
our special time. She has learned to respect the land and understands and
supports the "Tread Lightly" program. I am sure that when she becomes a
mother, she will want to pass on this tradition to her children. It would be
a shame if there were no public lands to enjoy!
I urge you to abandon this Roadless Initiative plan and adopt one that
actively educates and solicits the help from those of us who do wish to keep
our public lands available for all to use. This country does not want to be
locked out of the forests, pure and simple.
Thank you for time. Please feel free to contact me at the enclosed address
if you wish to further discuss options to the Roadless Initiative plan that
is a win-win for all.
Respectfully,
Marilyn Teplitz

Marilyn,
You are most welcome. I am flattered that I can represent the group, but
what we need is all 200 members of the AZ_VJC sending in THEIR comments too.
There is power in numbers, no doubt about that!
I encourage you to cut and paste anything you wish out of mine (and I'll go
so far as to say that DougB probably wouldn't mind too much if you borrowed
some good verbiage from his as well...OK, Doug?). Your views do not have to
be that original. Since you agree with what I say, say it again.
Washington needs to hear YOU say it!
The important thing is to get yet another letter to Mr. Dombeck so he knows
that yet one more person does NOT like the Clinton administration's Roadless
plan. If WE don't tell him it stinks, the greenies will tell him it is
great!
Please, please, please send him an e-mail and become one of the vocal ones,
even if it is just this one time. Marilyn, you already took the step to
send me a note, and I thank you very much for that. Now send Mr. Dombeck
one and tell him how you feel too!
Thanks a million for helping out OUR cause!

Hi all,
After a weekend of offroading I have decided I need a locker for my rear. I
have an 99TJ with a Dana 35 rear.

What should I buy? Also, how much does it cost to put one in?

Jake,
You might look into the new axles that some company is selling for the Dana

There is power in numbers, no doubt about that!
