Bob,

It sounds like a power valve problem maybe a crack in tne gasket or maybe even a warped metering plate or a float bowl screw torque problem. Holly's run really well but sometime they can be real touchy. Don't know everything you did to the carb but I hope this helps.

The stock Jeep wheels all have a backspacing of 5.25", which will cause alot of rubbing with 33's no matter what width rim is used. You also need at least an 8" wide wheel for the 33's to have a decent footprint. I'd recommend aftermaket wheels, 15x8 with 3.75"-4" of backspace for the 33's. They are a common size to find.

You will really need 4" of lift to clear them - 4" suspension lift (most expensive), 2" coil spacer plus 2" body (least expensive), or 3" coil plus 1" body.

Well, the TJ lift went well this weekend. Sure looks much nicer with those
33" BFGs (thanks Joe!). Many thanks to Dan Weed for helping me with the
lift. The only difficulty encountered was that my front end swaybar end
links did not want to come off, even after soaking them with liguid wrench
for 3 days.
A hint to all those who will be lifting their TJs...
Do not remove the lower bolt when trying to remove the front end swaybar end
links. Only remove the upper nut and then use a big hammer to beat upward on
the swaybar itself. That got mine to finally pop free.
I know a lot of members have the Rubicon Express kits, but the Tera kit was
a breeze to install. It rides just as well as stock with the Rancho RS9000s
set to 2.

I will be going out to the rock crawling championships this Saturday. I
never heard back from Sandee on volunteering so I'm just going to watch. How
many others are going?

Well the first thing is don't listen to anyone who says put a body lift on an XJ ;-).

About 90% of the XJ's came with 15x7's I think you could only get 15x6 on 2 wheel drive versions and only the last few years had 15x8 available. You will need at least 4.5" of lift for 32's and even more for 33's, and they will still rub if you don't do some trimming. If you do run 33's I would use 9.5-10.5's XJ's have really small wheel wells. You can't even run 31-10.5's at stock height without some rubbing unless you have the up-country package. As far as the lift you can do a cheap up to 3" front spacer, rear add-a-leaf, shackle setup for about $150 minus shocks, Or the J.C. Whitney $99 3" kit (neither includes shocks). Or you can break the bank and go with something like a Rubicon Express kit with all the goodies for $1000+.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Linda,

Is there anyway I can tell which rims are on the XJ other than measuring. My friend is currently running 30x9.50x15 on the 5-spoke jeep rims. He currently has the stock suspension with RS9000's. It seems that the 33's will fit for road use, but would rub anywhere offroad. Any suggestions on size of lift to give enough articulation and clearance for the 33's. Thanks in advance.

Jason,
It will take at least 6 inches of lift on an XJ to clear 33's.
Then you have to worry about vibes/angles/steering problems
the list goes on an on, The best place for your friend to find the best info on all XJ related items is www.naxja.org
I am a member of this organization and there are some very knowledgable people theat post to that list... Check it out.

Subject: expensive weekend

Howdy y'all

I would be up for helping out Al...........perhaps if he did an inventory of
what is salvagable off of the Ox and posted a "wish list" of parts needed
for his new rig (whatever it may be) we could all contribute some parts out
of the "pile in the garage" that we all have.

On another note, it turned out to be an expensive weekend for me
too.......in a happy way though. First, I found out that my limited slip
rear is now a full slip. I also got to go for my first ride in not one but
two vehicles with lockers at both ends, so I'm shopping for lockers.
Anybody have anything lying around for a front D44 or a rear D60? ( I can
hope, can't I?)

I also got myself into a hole that required a rock stack to get me out of,
so a few inches of lift and some bigger tires are on the shopping list too.
I announced to the 2nd Cove group that the tax return was going towards lift
and tires, then found out when I got to the campsite that my wife-to-be was
listening to the group chatter on the CB! OOPS!!

Those aren't the most expensive things though.......Pam already had the
offroad bug from going out with me in the J10, but when Stu took her for a
ride in his TJ she got hooked in a big way. As soon as she got out of the
Jeep she said "The Dakota is for sale!"

Sooooo.......in addition to a lift, lockers and tires for me, we're shopping
for a "little Jeep" for Pam. In order to make sure she gets exactly what
she wants, we would like to ask a favor of the group: Pam would like to
ride along during a trail run in a TJ, a YJ and a CJ to see which "fits" and
"feels" best. Perhaps Bill A could even let her tag along in the M38
sometime. You've all seen my rig, so you know that I have no fear of "some
work required" (hee hee) and neither does she. In fact, Jeep fever has bit
hard enough to make her postpone the project she's wanted to build for
years: a '55 Chevy street rod with a 454 and a 4 speed. We'll have one
eventually, but first we're going to build TWO Jeeps.

Thanks to everyone for all their help in the Coves. We had a blast camping
with Stu and Sinan.........hopefully we can do it again soon - without the
rain.

take care

Len and Pam

Jon,

Thanks for providing that extra bit of info. I was disappointed to hear
about Dave's conversation with the Ranger, but hoped that it was just one
of those deals where she is so far down the totem pole that she doesn't
hear details. Looks like that was the case here. I added Stu's picture
of the dumpster on the website, so people can get an idea of how much we
pulled out. Judging by what I saw in the dunpster, it was fairly empty

Sounds like a good deal, the only thing that I would be concerned about
is that their kit doesn't seem to shorten the overall length of the
transfer case like the other kits--no decrease in driveline angle. I
would be interested in hearing from someone that has actually done this
and get their opinions on it. Either way, like I said sounds like a
great deal and with the group discount, you can bump up to the High

Subject: Please read, Agua Frian Basin

Ok, I am no recorder by any means so here goes..

Basically the EPA has drafted a law that requires land owners be it BLM or
Joe average to eleminate dust on land more than a 10th of an acre. The river
bottom basin is an area of not only private but BLM land. The area of MAJOR
concern is the area off of the Camelback bridge. Therre is a Co. named Cemex
that owns the river bottom in that section of the basin. Blm owns the west
section
from the edge of the river bed to the fence line to the west. Cemex was
issued a warning by the Epa to close this area off due to the dust. The
particulates were severly bad in this area and the nearby neighborhoods were
complaning regulary. Now it is my understanding that the Epa is trying to
get Arizona parks and rec. to take over the issue of relocation or dust
control of the area.
There were A few key people at this meeting that had some very improtant
issues.
Blm, "you can't close these lands down to the OHV community or there will be
more sevre problems elsewhere"
Game and Fish, "you are going to effect the reaserch and projects that we
are trying to conduct, also game control and species tracking". There were
also numerous people reflecting the OHV community, there were Ballooist and
even A guy who rides horses.
They all had very important points that the Epa took into account and
responded to. There also was a man who Volinteringly was representing the
OHV community Grant fund (gas tax) who stated to the Epa that if these lands
were closed and or restricted that not only would WE (ohv com.) but the
Epa,Blm,G&F,Parks&rec. loose the grants for such purposes as the dust
problem and the relocation or creation of an OHV park.

This meeting kind of boiled down to the fact that there were 3 diffrent
agencies in the govt. that were defeating eachothers purposes.
National forest serv. had a meeting last week and discussed the new land
grab issues and OHV use. they were trying to implement a plan and the Epa
has stepped on the Forest services feet by closing such areas.
Basically it's all about money $$. If Epa cannot get the air quality better
they will loose 2.8billion dollars in funds.
I am not sure where this 2.8billion dollars is going to go or not go I just
know that this is thier purpose.

Closing,
If they want to close us out of certian areas they Damn well better provide
us with something bigger and better. I used to use this area all the time to
play on the rocks and mud pits.. But we cannot defeat the sprawl of the city
and people will complain.
The Blm and Game and Fish and National forest serv. are on our side. They
want to help us help the situation. They were actually amazed as to how many
people showed up. 3 Azvjc members, Asa4wdc (Sandee), Mesa 4wheeler member,
Land cruser club member. After the meeting I spoke to a guy that was with
the BLM, He informed me that they want to stand behind the OHV comm. and
will do what they can to assist. It was decided by all that there was too
much involved and too little of the Higher up Govt. people there to even
come up with any answers. So there will be another meeting soon. If you have
any questions please feel free to e-mail me. Hal Loy and Stu Olsen were both
at the meeting also so they may have more to add.
I appolagize if it seems scrambled but I have been up for almost 36hrs
now......
Dave (AZXJ)
I tried!!

Price looks good but it doesn't help the drive shaft angle since it
doesn't move the mounting point forward. It would also cause you to
have to rotate the rear axle further to get proper alignment.

find that they very rarely lose or fail.
