View Full Version : Should I keep my hard top???

I'm struggling on a decision over this one. I'm getting into some hardcore wheeling lately and i'm afraid of ruining my hard top. I've never had the top off and I really don't have room for a hoist in my garage. My Jeep is a daily driver for short trips only. I know I could make a profit on the hard top which could be used for more upgrades. Any suggestions??? Thanks!

I was in a similar situation with my Rubicon - it came with the dual top option (not my choice, but it was on the lot the day after the Rubi's hit the market, so I took it :) ). FWIW, I decided to sell the hard top after I made it through the first summer without needing the hard top to hold in the cold, and haven't missed it. Unless you have young children in the back seat or need the slightly improved security of the hard top, I say sell it and use the money for performance upgrades...

I had the same problem a couple of years ago... ultimately, I got tired of storing the dang thing and I sold it. I found that the more I used my Jeep, the less I cared to use the hardtop... I REALLY like top-down and/or windows off driving.

I vote to sell the hardtop and use the money for a winch!

Kind Regards,

Joe

Thanks for the replies so far. I guess i'll be selling the top. My next question is how much is a soft top going to run me? I need everything as mine did not come equipped with a soft top. I believe the '03 models like mine have a different header also. By the way; I have full doors. Thanks! :)

Do you use the rear seat for passengers etc.? I ask because if you don't haul passengers, (I sold my rear seat to avoid passengers) a bikini and windjammer do a great job keeping the weather out at a fraction of the price of a soft top even if you have to buy boomerangs for the doors. I built a header and bolted it to the garage wall to hang the hardtop on. This way it only sticks out 2 1/2 or 3 feet preserving valuable space.

Hmmm...Great idea; Gris! My rear seat is out and I just use the space for tools and such. How is this setup for noise and rain? Thanks!

Definitely keep your full doors. I love having the full door option with my softop. Also just keep an eye out on the site for someone selling one. I have a 99 TJ and have an extra soft top frame. Like you said I don't if it will fit on the 03's. If it does fit let me know and we can talk about it.

I love my soft top.... I use my jeep as my daily driver my son loves having the sides off also and he is only a year and half... so it seems like a good idea to me. Also I don't have to worry about it getting tore up. I would talk to four wheel parts on country club and broadway.... I have never had a problem with them.. 480 464 8010...

I dont know about that one... I wish I had a hard top... Remeber the coke oven trip when it was 104..... I have only had soft tops on my Jeeps. You can take my Jeep for a couple of days if you want to see if you really like it. Send me a e-mail when you get a chance, I want to hear about Moab... talk to you soon Jason M
