Subject: Arizona licenses and insurance
hi all, i am moving to arizona in a couple months here. I am bringing
my XJ and I am thinking about buying a project CJ after I get down
there this summer. If I were to buy that CJ and make it a trail rig
that would only see dirt, not pavement. Would I have to license that
under AZ law and have insurance? What all fees are involved in AZ in
that situation (sales tax, property tax, licensing, etc.)....Also, on
my XJ, would I have to pay a bunch for licensing and stuff out there
where here in missouri i only pay about $20 a year for license? I
heard that AZ licensing fees suck.
thanks

Jim,
Thanks for setting up the discounts with Off-Road Unlimited, it is
always nice to pay less then retail prices, especially when the things
we get are usually VERY expensive.

Kevin,
Arizona requires that the vehilce be licensed and insured. In AZ the registration fee is based on value (blue book) not road usage. So it can be pretty expensive with new vehicles. My 95 YJ was about $120.00 for the year. The only good thing is that, since it is based on value, the registration fee is tax deductable on your federal income taxes. And for more good news, they say that seven of every ten cars you see on the road is un or under insured which is why the rest of us pay so much for insurance.

Hi Kevin - Your right about Az registration fees - they can be very
high...or very low. They're based on the original purchase price of the
vehicle...so the newer it is, the more you pay.
As to licensing a trail rig, I'd think that if you plan on trailering it, I
don't believe you'd need to license it. However, it'd probably be a good
idea, since sometimes you can get on a public road whi;e heading between
trails. I'm also not certain of the regs on Forest Service Rds. Certainly,
we see many ATV's on them (that aren't registered). Maybe someone else in
the group can answer that one better than I.

I had a high-flow converter put on my Jeep yesterday by Mad Hatter
exhaust shop on Gilbert Road/Broadway. I asked if they would be
willing to offer a Jeep club discount, perhaps a % on parts or service.
I didn't get a discount yesterday (cost me $250!) but they seemed
interested and would talk to the owner on Tuesday when he's back in the
shop. I'm supposed to call Lori back Wednesday for the details.
I got the name for Mad Hatter from someone else's service story in the
club. Bill A. maybe? I've only driven the Jeep home from the shop so
far, but it runs so much better already! It's a good fit with the
Borla header and catback exhaust.
Hope to be at the Coves this afternoon. Gotta get my sister to the
airport.

Added GEN-STAR Electric to the directory.Theyve been in business for a
long time and know most all there is to know on starting/charging
systems and parts. (all the inside tricks)
Example:I'm replacing the original 63 amp alternator from my YJ with a
100 amp unit design (for 75-80 bucks). Gary is having it built this
weekend(why I'm not at the Coves)and says they can build them to output
upwards of 125 amps. They've also agreed to sell red top OPTIMA
batterys for 120.00. They will repair your unit, rebuild it or exchange.
On every build they replace (with new) all bearings, brushes and
regulator. The shop is clean, the work is high quality and the guys are
willing to discuss and help. They're excited to have the AZJVC as
customer!! Any questions? Give Gary(or Greg) a call. Don't forget to

Glad to hear that they treated you right over there at Mad Hatter. They
where recomended to me from a friend with a ram charger. I have had
absolute zero problems with the exhaust that they put on my M38A1. It
cost me $150. I would like to have a discount with them. It may come in
handy if I decide to put a V6 in my Jeep. If I do I will go back to
them. They just seem to care. Please keep the club informed of the
outcome. I'll be at the coves this Sunday, Hope to see you and the club

The Laws of the Land are available on-line at:

You should be able to find the answers regarding registration of off

Hope this helps. Sometimes the laws aren't very clear.

Hello Kevin,
Glad to see another XJ coming to AZ. Some of us in the AZ_VJC club also
belong to another national organization (club) called NAXJA - North American
XJ Association. We have a couple of events coming up, one in Moab (not to
far, just at the border of AZ and Utah). I am sure you know where it is if
you have read any of the Off-Road magazines. Check out our web site:

But, WELCOME to AZ. Hope to catch you on the trails.

what kind of converter did you get?? I just had a dynomax high flow cat put

did a nice job...I had to wait for a bit even though I had an appointment but

a turn down tip on the back for free (last tip got crunched at mud springs =)

They got me for a $150 converter and $85 for labor. A little steep
perhaps, but I had only found high flow converters in some catalogs for
around $175-$200 on up. They did good work though on the install, no
appointment and had it done within an hour. They added a larger pipe
between the converter and muffler since I have the header and
catback...why waste it with a smaller pipe? ha ha

Hey Everyone
I took my CJ to Muffler Master in Glendale for a complete new system from the headers back ( 304 ). It is a three inch system with cat and Turbo muffler. Cost was 325 for everything with cross over etc. I don't know if this is a super price but they custom made the system and it fits and sounds great. It is a family busines and they treated me real good.

Check for a loose wire near the coil or in that whole area. My previous jeep
was a YJ. Every now and then it would miss. I was working on something else
one day and bumped a wire. It missed. Played more with the wires and got
more misses. Replaced the coil (new wires) and it never missed again.

Subject: AlliedSignal Club Run to Moab
If anyone is interested the AlliedSignal annual trek to Moab
is going to be the first week in April. Most of the club
will be camping at the Archview camp ground that is about 7
miles north of Moab. They have full hook-ups for motor
homes, grass areas for tents and also a few small cabins.
Archview Camp ground phone is (800) 813-6622 call for
reservations.
Most members will be there by Wednesday(4/5) night so they
can do trips Thur,Fri,Sat and maybe Sun if motivated. We
usually split into two groups for the different level of
trails the area has to offer. All you really need up there
are the East and West area Moab maps, (easy to get) most the
trails are well documented and marked.
It take at least nine hours to get to Moab from Phoenix.
See you up there if you are interested.
Bernie Southerland
I may go up a day ot two early to do some scouting or do
some of the nastier trips that I wouldn't want to make the
club run.

Subject: Cove 3 Trip Report - AZ-VJC Cleanup Day at Saguaro Lake (long)
Cove 3 Trip Report - AZ-VJC Cleanup Day at Saguaro Lake
The AZ_VJC met in the parking lot at Butcher Jones Rec Area at 9AM March
4. This seemed to be the first trip for several members, and with a
turnout of around 20 vehicles, was one of the largest we have had in
recent memory. Jon held an introductory meeting thanking everyone for
showing and offered up some free AZ-VJC stickers, which were immediately
pounced on by eager Jeepers. We then split into 4 groups to each take a
Cove, using the time-honored CB tradition of Cove 1=CB1, Cove 2=CB2,
etc... Lunch was to be at Cove 2 at noon.
DougB led the group for Cove 3, which included:
DougB 98TJ
Linda ZJ
Dave 98TJ
Jim 89XJ
Damon
? (sorry) (1 TJ, 1 YJ)
We met up for a few minutes with Doug to get an idea of what area we were
going to hit, and plan for the day before rolling out. After climbing
the first hill, we stopped near one of the other groups since Doug spied
a swiss-cheesed 55-gallon drum that would be great for holding cans. He
dragged that out of the bush, and we set off for the north end of the
washes, since they were more out-of-the way and should gain us some
serious garbage.
All told, we made several stops on the way to Cove 3, picking up trash
and leaving it in central areas to grab on the way out. The standard
find was Bud Light, although the occasional gourmet beer like Pabst Blue
Ribbon could be found stuck under bushes. I ran across a complete air
dam from a Grand Cherokee at one stop, which gathered quite a few looks
and comments on the way out when I had it trussed to my roof.
We made a slight miscalculation and ended up at Cove 2 before lunch, so
decided to head back and actually find Cove 3 and clean it up. Upon
arrival, it was apparent that we had our work cut out for us. The kids
had already been warned to leave the toilet paper piles alone, but that
still netted us at least 3 full trash bags of cans, bottles, paper
plates, and the stuff civilized folk trek out to the garbage each day.
The best find of the day was not a piece of trash picked up, but the
number of concerned Jeepers we ran across that were not affiliated with
the AZ_VJC, but who agreed to grab a trash bag and haul it out. One
group of 4 Jeeps pulled into Cove 3 shortly after us, and we chatted for
awhile explaining who we are and what we were doing, they seemed pretty
receptive to helping out, and I can only hope that efforts like the ones
everybody made today will help our hobby in the future.
Dave and I had to take off early, leaving Doug and Linda to try to get
what they could of Cove 3 picked up. We grabbed full trash bags on the
way out, and completely loaded the backs of both our Jeeps, including the
big gray air dam on my roof. I ran across another Jeeper who looked at
the carnage on top, and commented that I "shouldn't try that hill" since
I had already done so much damage to my Cherokee. :-)
The only downside to the day came at the very end (no, not the college
kids ripping around on their ATVs), but at the trash dumpster itself. By
the time we got there and contributed, the dumpster was pretty much
overfilled. While I aired back up, Dave noticed a Ranger nearby and went
to ask if she could arrange to get the trash dumped (turns out normal
pickup day is Monday). He explained what the AZ-VJC was doing, and that
there was more on the way, but that our attempt to clean up the place
doesn't work if the public only sees overflowing garbage at the park
itself. I think he got her attention with that, and she said she would
try to get it dumped sooner. Hope it happened.

Kevin,
Arizona requires that the vehilce be licensed and insured.

On every build they replace (with new) all bearings, brushes and

I took my CJ to Muffler Master in Glendale for a complete new system from the headers back ( 304 ). It is a three inch system with cat and Turbo muffler. Cost was 325 for everything with cross over etc. I don't know if this is a super price but they custom made the system and it fits and sounds great. It is a family busines and they treated me real good.

perhaps, but I had only found high flow converters in some catalogs for
around $175-$200 on up. They did good work though on the install, no
appointment and had it done within an hour. They added a larger pipe
between the converter and muffler since I have the header and
catback...why waste it with a smaller pipe? ha ha

Well folks I was wrong. The fuel pump didn't fix the problem. I took it
down to the shop today and had it scoped out. Everything looked good
except a week ballast resistor but I got a new one. I am out of ideas.
Any help would sure help my sanity. Just as a refresher, the problem is
an intermittent miss at highway cruse speed. A tad worse up a gradual
hill. Ignition good top to bottom. Carb rebuilt and set up. New fuel
pump.

Check for a loose wire near the coil or in that whole area. My previous jeep
was a YJ. Every now and then it would miss. I was working on something else
one day and bumped a wire. It missed. Played more with the wires and got
more misses. Replaced the coil (new wires) and it never missed again.
Ya never know

I may go up a day ot two early to do some scouting or do
some of the nastier trips that I wouldn't want to make the
club run.
Some Moab area trails (note a 4-4+ is nasty)
