I am going to Moab on Tuesday night come hell or high water and I need to get my V8 install completed. I need to set the distributor in my 86 350. I have never done one before and I don't even know the firing order as I have an aftermarket intake.
Anyone got a link or care to walk me through the install?

I don't know if the intake matters, but most SBC use a firing order of 18436572. Can't say if this is correct for your application or not.
As for the distributor, you need to get the #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke first. Pull the #1 plug, hold your finger over the hole (I've also used a wine cork lightly stuffed into the hole) and crank the engine with a socket on the crank pulley until it blows your finger off the hole (or the cork out) so you know you're on the compression stroke. Then keep cranking until the timing mark lines up with the TDC mark.
Insert your distributor so the rotor points to the #1 plug wire. This should be close enough to get it to fire and run. Then just time it as you would normally.
Good luck and have fun in Moab (and post pics!)

After the number one pistion is at top of number one cylinder. Set the distrubitor into position with the distrubitor cap on. The cap should show a number one on one of plug wire connections indicating the position of number one plug. Now remove the cap and set the rotor in place and see if it is pointed the direction of the number one. If not remove and turn distributor until close enough to adjust. Remember the rotor turns as it is installed.
If it comes to hell or high water take the high water and let me know if you need more help, I 'm sorta of close to you.
