Subject: Factory 15x6 and 15x7 TJ wheels

A while back I decided to get rid of my OEM snowflakes that came with my
ZJ and replace them with basic steel TJ wheels. I got a set from Rose,
had my tires mounted on them and then realized that they are 15x6s not
15x7s! Not a big deal, I am running 33x9.50r15s and they can go on 15x6
wheels. My old Dodge truck was set up this way. I was a bit concerned
about the wheel width, but after a few reassurances, have decided to
keep them. The ZJ weighs a lot less than the truck did and I never had
trouble with the skinny tires on the Dodge.

Last night I stopped by Darner Jeep. I wanted to find out what a 15x7
steel Jeep wheel looked like. Well, it's the one with the star pattern.
Nice looking wheel. These are used on XJs and TJs. WJs use only 16"
wheels. So... If anyone in the az-vjc has a set of these lying around
their garage, I'll be happy to give them a new home! I am considering
going to 33x10.50s since BFG is coming out with a new MT tread design

Linda,

I think you're on to something. Either an oversized (overweight) sign
like that, and if the Forest Service is amenable to it, we can plant that
puppy in some concrete; hopefully enough to discourage "winch testing".
I'd rather haul concrete bags in than haul someone else's leftover food
out.

My ex-father-in-law has always been a big fan of overengineering, he used
railroad ties as his front gate supports, and buried those in a 6-foot
hole with LOTS of concrete. He's backed into it a few times, and nothing
gave except the bumper on his truck. I like this type of thinking <G>

After having our mailbox destroyed a few times, we bought a 6-ft piece of
cast iron sewage pipe, buried it three feet in the ground, filled it with
concrete, and concreted around it. The mailbox has a sleeve made of 1/4"
steel.

Subject: controling oil blow-by

Hey All,

Since I hav some stuff to do to the cherokee today I thought Id play with
the oil blowby problem we all seem to have....I have already cleaned out the
valve cover and vaccum risers..... installed new vaccum baffles in the
risers.....replaced all the vaccum lines. Everything they say to do, to no
avail....I was still losing about a quart of oil each 400 miles.

Today I seam to have fixed the problem....and so easy too!....I removed the
valve cover.....took off the vaccum risers....and drilled four half inch
holes in the riser.....two on each side....cleaned everything and put it
back together.....my idea was to relieve the vaccum pressure at the bottom
of the riser and viola!.....I drove 30 miles on the highway at 75+ and no
blowby....lets hope it keeps working!

The only other option would be to rebuild the head. and have all the galleys
cleaned and the valve seats replaced.

Wait a minute.
I was looking for the Earth Zealot Club Forum!

What are you talking about Jeeps for?

I want to ban the use of all infernal combustion engines, on road too!

I want to ban the eating of things that used to be alive, including plants
and single celled animals.

I want all of the metal mined from the earth to be put back in, but we need
a way to melt all of the Jeeps down without creating any pollution.

OH MY GOD _ WHAT DID YOU SAY!!???!?!?

I have just been informed that the plastic used to make this keyboard used
to be a dinosaur, which used to be a living thing!

And that the electricity used to run my computer (And my electric battery
powered car) is supplied by burning precious fossil fuel, which also used to
be living things!

I must stop typing immediately! I am sinning against our mother earth!

I must perform pennance!

I know, I'll go far into the wilderness - and live in a primative fashion,
using no metal utensils or tools! I'll live naked, subsisting upon fresh
spring water and sunshine! (I'll try to filter the water to prevent me from
accidentally eating a single single celled organism - and then re- release
them to the wild!)

Good Bye Every One! - Wish me Luck!

OK - I'm back. I'm so bummed out.

My electric car couldn't make it into the wilderness, ran out of juice, and
couldn't get through the rough trails to reach the wilderness anyway...

I had to walk 200 miles. The mosquitoes kept biting me. It was very hard to
gently pick them up, and pull their little mouth parts out of my skin,
without damaging their delicate little wings....

I got very hungry. Spring water is not as filling as I had hoped, and I must
have accidentally eaten some single celled organisms, because I got really
bad diahrea...

It was very messy because the toilet paper was made from trees, which used
to be alive...

I agonized over whether it was ethical to rinse myself in the springwater,
which might pollute it.

I decided that since all of the local animals were doing it in the spring, I
would be joining their community if I did too.

I got tired of the mosquitoes sucking my blood out, despite my best efforts
to be a good sport about it....

And I was really hungry....

So I ate a couple of them...I was just getting my own blood back, really...

I was getting weaker and weaker.

I saw other animals eating some plants. I figured if they could, I could
still be a part of this wonderful ecosystem if I did too - so I ate some
plants too. May God forgive me.

A bear tried to eat me. I felt that this was quite unfair, and I tried to
convince it not to. Unfortunetely, in the course of the admittedly heated
debate, I had clamped my teeth into the bear's throat, and as it lost
consciousness, I had decided to continue my grip, in case it recovered, and
made another try.

Not wanting to waste one of mother nature's gifts, I ate the bear. Raw.

It was good. I started looking at the other animals a bit differently.

I was a part of the ecosystem!

It was getting colder and colder!

The rain was unrelenting!

I pulled some branches over myself to shield me from the downpour.

My bare feet and hands were numb. I wrapped myself in the skin of the bear,
and burned some already dead trees to try to stay warm.

It dawned on me - I have a house with heat, and food, and a roof.

The thought of walking 200 miles back to my dead batteried electric car was
overwhelming.

I decided to go for it, before I just froze to death anyway...

I had gotten a mile or two, when some Jeeps came by, and asked if I needed
help.

They gave me a ride back to my car.

I gave one of them the 200 pound battery from my electric car, because he
had a really big electric winch...

They then drove me all the way home!

Maybe melting down all of the Jeeps is a bad idea?

If I had a Jeep, I could go back and visit my woodland friends anytime I
wanted!

And eat them!

Well, I'm off to the Jeep dealer - Wish me luck!

That sounds great! I put 4.56 gears in mine the first of the month and love
them.

Since you are taking the TJ in to have them do the D30's gears, why not do a
locker or LSD at that time? The labor charges to install it will be free,
since they are already taking it apart for the gear change. If you do the
locker later, it will cost you twice as much (assuming you have them do the
labor).

I put a Detroit TrueTrac in mine and it is great. Others have installed a
Lockright. I opted for the gear LSD to go with the Detroit Locker I had put
in the rear D44.

Let us know how everything turns out.

Need a little feedback all. I've been a member of AZVJC since last fall

bunch(trashed my tires) and work everyday at returning for much
more(less damage...bigger hills). The membership here is free, the
people associated are excellent. AND this morning I had an idea.
Have we ever organized and used the power of our over 200 members to
gain special service and discounts from our local merchants? I know we
have members who own businesses and we send our business their way for
sure.
MY point. I owned and operated a Goodyear franchise for years and still
have contacts (and corporate resale number). This should still gain me
access to wholesale pricing from tire and parts distributors. For
example: Tire wholesale warehouses like Goodyear and Charlie Case tire
perhaps. I'm thinking also parts, service and repair (installation)
companies which I've got a good sized list of folks I used to do a
bunch of business with. Keep in mind that I have not approached any
businesses on behalf of out group as yet...
Is there a way we could recognize these companies(even just on the
egroup site) and organize a reference of reliable resources for our
members to use?
I'm thinking and excellent exchange... helps us... helps them and I
know that there are corporate product trials and possibly promotion
money available if I can reach the right people.
Anyone got any feedback?

Hi to all. My name is Bob Nyberg and I have been a member of AVJC for a couple

description: 77 CJ5, 304 W/rv cam, T18, D20. D30 up front with 1980 disc brake
knuckles, Warn one piece hub kit and lock rite. AMC 20 in rear with Warn full
floating axle kit and Trash lock( soon to be Detroit when cash available). 3"
lift, full cage, 32 X 11.50 Mud TA's and tons of misc. I have been reading all
the good emails and hope you all can help me with a dilemma. The engine runs
great at idle and flat road. If I put my foot into it she runs great. On
gradual uphills I get occasional spits and on steeper hills I get spits,
sputters and an intermittent pop through the carb. Holly 500 carb is rebuilt
and has 68 jets. Float is set good. I am running 12 deg timing. All ignition
good. This problem is really getting to me and any help would be greatly

is fender headers back to 3" turbos free to any one who wants. Thanks in advance.

Excellent idea, Bill. In fact we did this when we ordered a whole bunch of
Oasis Tire deflators. Since that was mail order - it was a little bit of a
hassle getting things all together so one large check could be sent in. We
also did it on a bulk shirt order (some of which I don't think to this day
have been picked up).

BUT - if we could get some sort of club discount at local businesses, and
maybe post these businesses on our web site as a quid pro quo - that would
be cool.

Subject: Exploratory Trip Trip Report

I got out to the Texaco a little late. There were three groups heading out to Power Line, Ajax, and Woodpecker so there was a
pretty good crowd in the parking lot. Tom (black 4Runner) came out for the exploration.

The trail I wanted to check out runs east to west from Happy Camp to Hewitt Canyon Rd. Tom and I headed up US60 to the Boyce
Thompson Arboretum where we turned north onto FR8. From FR8 we turned north on FR650 and easily located the east-west trail.
Things change in 5 years and this trail was no different! This time around the trail was really easy and the spots I
remembered from my previous trip had been smoothed out. The quarry walls; however, were in worse shape and I didn't even
consider trying to drive up the side --- but it is doable. The quarry is full of really loose rock, the sides are very steep.
We went on from there and starting climbing a road up a mountain side. We could see the top of Picket Post Butte from there.
The roads out here are in good shape, loose rock, noreally big washouts, and not very steep. They haven't seen a lot of use
and are a bit brushy. We made a couple of forays north of FR252 which turned out to be quite scenic. The trail I thought would
drop into Robles Canyon didn't even though it is on the map. In the end we dropped back down to FR252 and made a trip into
the canyon from the west end. Since neither of us had planned to spend to whole day out there we cut the trip short. Back on
pavement at 3:00pm.

There is a trail in Robles Canyon and another one that drops into the eastern side canyon that need to be explored. Remember
this is in the Tonto National Forest so staying on the trails is important.

All in all, a nice easy day on the trail. Some pretty good off-camber, short steep hill climbs, a few wahouts. The trails we
explored are about the same rating as the Coke Ovens and Box Canyon (2.0-2.5). Great trails for a novice driver or someone
just looking for a remote campsite to get away from the city for a while.

This is a CARCOMICH Announcement

Subject: Oil Prices.

Last year on April 30,1999, a gas out was staged across Canada and the
U.S. to bring the price of gas down, and it worked. It's time to do
something about it again.

Only this time lets make it for three days instead of just one.
The so-called oil cartel decided to slow production to drive up gasoline

prices. Lets see how many Canadian\American people we can get to ban
together for a three day period in April, NOT TO BUY ANY GASOLINE,
during
those three days.

LETS HAVE A GAS OUT. Do not buy any gasoline from
APRIL 7, 2000, THROUGH APRIL 9, 2000. Buy what you need before the dates

listed above, or after, but try not to buy any during the GAS OUT.

If you want to help, just send this to everyone you know and ask them to

do the same.

We brought the prices down once before, and we can do it again.

Lets stand together.

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE !!!

Harold B Meeks

Subject: Coves Cleanup-FINAL

Well, next weekend is the second annual Coves Cleanup, sponsored by AZ_VJC.
Here are some last minute details. (Directions are in a separate email for
those unfamiliar with the Coves.)

1. The date is Saturday, March 4. The Start is at 9AM at the Green cattle
gate at Butcher Jones beach. Leave yourself sufficient time to air down and
disconnect before the start. An information packet will be distributed at
the start with a map and GPS waypoints.
2. There will be 4 groups heading out at the start.
Cove 1 - (CB-channel 1) Leader Jon Loveless (last to leave)
Cove 2 - (CB channel 2) Leader Len Sullivan
Cove 3 - (CB channel 3) Leader Doug Ballard
Cove 4 - (CB channel 4) Leader Charles Bab****
3. Coves 1 and 2 will require the most work and will be the largest groups.
4. Groups for Coves 1, 2, 3 will also pickup the trail along the way. Cove
4 group will head directly to the 4th Cove.
5. If you arrive late, remember the channels for each cove and find
yourself a group.
6. There will be 2 trash drop off points along the way also. These will be
marked somehow (not sure yet how) so that we can leave full, closed bags
for pickup and delivery to the Dumpster.
7. Lunch will be at Cove 2 at noon - bring food to eat. The caterer
couldn't make the trip this time.
8. We will head back to Butcher Jones at 4pm to get all the trash in the
dumpsters and have photo ops of our mountain of stuff.
9. We have 180 trash bags - each group leader will have 45.
10. Bring gloves and something sharp (ie,-rake or spear) to get beer cans
out from in the cholla and such.
11. Bring water and a smile. This will be fun.
12. Twenty AZ_VJC decals will be given out to the first 20 people who ask
me for one.
13. Sunday will be a run to the 5th Cove and back out with any remaining
trash. For those who want to we will then go back out to Brownie Tank and
then up the long hill and out via Four Peaks Road. This is a beautiful run
for those who haven't been to the 5th Cove.

Directions to Butcher Jones are in a separate email.

See you all there.

I agree with Doug. We have also done this with PowerTanks (the CO2 tire inflators) and with DeLorme Topo maps. The PowerTank deal wasn't jumped on because the price was still high, but the manufacturer was willing to give us 20% of his list if we could muster 8 buyers. I bet most retailers would do the same if approached properly. I haven't found the local 4WD stores too willing to consider club discounts but they will compete with each other if you shop price.

BUT - if we could get some sort of club discount at local businesses, and
maybe post these businesses on our web site as a quid pro quo - that would
be cool.

I don't know about the Phoenix area but in Tucson both Dick Cepek and Desert Rat give 10% discounts to members of the Tucson Rough Riders. They might be willing to do the same for this group if there is a potential benefit in it for them. jon loveless wrote: original article:

Terry Heslin has asked us (me) to consider being a sponsor of the Coves.
Before I talk with him I would like some guidance/concurrence from a few in
the group. Here is my proposal:
1. we agree to sponsor the Coves 1-5, which includes the responsibility to
keep it clean. I am not sure yet what else is involved.
2. We get the USDA - Forest Rangers to let us place trash containers (50
gallon drums that I believe I have access to) at each of the Coves. Nothing
imposing like a dumpster, but a place for coves users to put trash. Even if
they aren't used by visitors, and we wouldn't be able to control that) it
would be a place for us to put stuff when we are out there. I am confident
that this kind of an effort would make it a great deal easier to keep the
coves looking decent.
3. Whenever anyone from the group goes to one of the Coves, they simply
haul out what they can to Butcher Jones and deposit it in a dumpster there.
We should also be on the lookout for big trash like chevys and fords ;-)
(now, don't take offense anyone - this isn't a 'Jeeps are better' thing, it
is just a joke)
4. We plan at least a quarterly run to the Coves with an objective of
having some fun and returning with trash. That would include picking some
stuff up off the trails to the coves as well.
5. I would be happy to take on this responsibility, including leading a
quarterly mini-clean run - I go out there almost that often anyway and
would absolutely love a good solid excuse to go.

All this would take would be a general agreement from the group to
participate whenever anyone goes out there. Organized or not. I believe we
could get some press for this, have a lasting effort to keep it clean, have
some fun, and have a clean(er) place to visit and show off as a true effort
to keep the trails open. I often pickup up junk when I go out there - this
would just get others in the group to join in.

I would appreciate comments, thoughts or ideas before I talk to Terry
Heslin next week. If the group doesn't want to get behind this I may
sponsor it myself. The Coves is/are a great place to have so close by and I
don't want it closed.

Need a little feedback all. I've been a member of AZVJC since last fall
with my jeepin buddy Maniatico who introduced me to this excellent
gathering of people. So far only made one trip, coves, learned a
bunch(trashed my tires) and work everyday at returning for much
more(less damage...bigger hills).

I couldn't stop to get details, but there was a project-looking FSJ
pickup on the Mill about 1/8 - 1/4 mile south of Southern in Tempe this
afternoon. It's gray (combination paint and primer), body loked pretty
straight though. I've seen it in the area before, so I believe that's
its home if anyone's interested.

Unfortunately, as I'm sure your aware, carbs aren't the ideal choice for off-roading
(when compared to fuel injection). I know I have had to do a lot of tinkering to get
my Edelbrock carb to perform well off road. I believe that Holly makes a number of
aftermarket parts to improve off-road-ability. Maybe give them a call and see what
they suggest. I think they make some jet extensions or something so that they are
always submerged in fuel when on an incline or something like that. I've talked to a
number of people who have gotten them to work well off road. But give Holly a call
and I am sure that they could make some suggestions on how to improve it.
