Does anyone know of a reputible (?) engine shop to get a new I-6 258 for a fairly good price. Or can I just order one from a place such as, NAPA or Pep Boys or some place like that and it will be just as good? Any info will be appreciated. Thx

I'm new to AZ, so I can't recommend anywhere to buy new, but is there a reason you don't just have your short block rebuilt? I had mine rebuilt back in Oregon for about $800 (included upgraded cam, pistons, etc.). The head rebuild is usually around $200.

You might want to consider taking the opportunity (if you have to swap engines anyway) to cruise the junkyards for a fuel injected 4.0 or V8.

The reason I don't have it rebuilt is that there is a hole in my block. Probably a little hard to rebuild that. And I have had a few offers of people selling rebuilt engines.....not that there lying but who's to say that they were really rebuilt. I can not afford to pay 700-800 and have no engine in a few weeks/months because the engine was never really rebuilt.

They will probably will charge you for a core if there is hole in the Block it won't be any good for a core.. i think it was like $300 for a core..

I called them last week and they told me something like $1200! Maybe I told them the wrong thing, I basically said that I needed to know how much it would be for a new engine, explained what I had and they told me that amt or more. Do I tell them that I only need the block, not sure. Please let me know, I can't afford $1200-$1500 that they may have told me. All I need is the block, everything else is fine. Thx

Ya, if you could find the receipt that would be great. Not counting on them matching it but it never hurts to try. I do hava a question though, I have an 87 YJ, 258 I-6, is that a long block or small block??? Does it really matter??? Another place that I got a quote from said that it was a long block, I thought it was a small block, seeing as how it is not THAT big of an engine, i don't know. Anyway, my email address is: landen17@hotmail.com Thanx alot if you can find it. Later

They may have quoted you for a long block. If your head is still good, you only need the short block.

You should probably have your head rebuilt/surfaced while you have it off since you don't really want to put a worn head on a new block and it isn't too much extra to have it rebuilt/surfaced.

Good luck with the quotes.

If they are going to charge you some insane amount for a core charge let me know. I have a 258 that was in my jeep when my house caught fire. It had a fairly recent rebuild on it before the fire, but now as you can probably guess anything plastic or wiring, carb, distributor, etc are all melted. Anyways if all else fails I could sell it to you for really cheap (has to be worth my while to pull it :) and you could use it as a core exchange.

Sweet.....thx. Ya, I'll let ya know. I need to call my cousin who is the family mechanic and ask him about the head. I only know about what i've had to fix myself. Once he gives me an answer we'll get this thing goin. Thx Guys.
