What's the best way to disable the unsolicited pop-ups that happen when you're going to different internet web sites? I have Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6.

dOWNLOAD MOZZILA FIREBIRD AND THUNDERBIRD. oops caps lock.
use these instead of outlook and internet exploder. No more popups, and very little chance of viruses.

The best I've found is to go to http://toolbar.google.com/ and download the toolbar. It will creat a REAL convenient google search box and you can activate the popup blocker which also remembers what sites are allowed to popup. It's a great tool.

I agree with Nick. Every since I installed the Google toolbar I haven't had any problems with pop ups and if you are on a site that uses them for information hold the "ctrl" key down, they are back for that one click.
It's been the best addition I have made recently. The log shows it has blocked 209 pop ups since install.
You might also try this: http://www.computerproblems.com/questions/question.cfm?id=3618
if the pop up come out of no place.

Pop ups are also caused by spyware software installed on your computer. A good tool for removing spyware is Spybot Search & Destroy. If you download it, make sure you do the update before you run it.

Also Ad-Aware is another spybot checker, but missed alot of things that Spybot S&D found.
Norton Anti-Virus 2004 has a built in feature to disable installations of software from visiting web sites.

I agree with the Google toolbar. I generally don't like add-on toolbars but this Google bar is really useful. The popup killer is great but it does even more.

I downloaded mozilla firefox last night and I like it a lot so far.I havent seen a pop-up window yet. Firefox replaced firebird or whatever it was.
