Subject: Re: Lift Kits

What type of driving will you be doing? What is the largest size of tires
you see yourself running? What type of money do you plan on spending?

There are budget lifts available but if you are interested in top of the
line then go with a complete system. Tera and RE are generally regarded as
the best.

Keep in mind that with 3" or 4" kits (actually yield 4" & 5" respectively)
you are going to have to deal with driveline vibrations in most cases. 3"
kits are usually ok with a 1" transfer case drop but in turn you loose 1" of
ground clearance. 4" kits start to get a little more complicated when
dealing with vibrations. Often, a Fixed Yoke kit is needed for the transfer
case and in turn, a CV driveshaft is used to combat vibrations. Upper
control arms are usually needed to adjust the pinion angle when installing a
CV driveshaft..... these items will also allow you to keep the transfer case
in the stock position instead of lowering it.

If forced to pick one kit I would choose RE (to save money in the long run).
They do seem to offer kits that are more complete while Tera gets you the
basics and then you can customize from that point (which I have done). Keep
in mind that each companies components differ only in the slightest of
nuances. You will be happy with either.

The suspension on my TJ is made up almost equally of Tera and RE components.
Tera lower control arms
RE upper control arms
Tera Springs
Tera Disco's
RE front trackbar
If I had it to do again I would have went with Tera arms top & bottom and RE
springs at the 4 corners.

You should go on a couple of runs with the group and see each kit in
action... talk to the owners.

Good luck,
Larry

Could it be the Southerland(sp) Trail ?
If so it does not got to MT Lemmon any more, it does have a high rated
hill climb before you have to turn around and do the trail in reverse.

Well everyone we did it again! The Ford is out and with little or no
problem at all. Now we are getting all the problems from the people
who own the truck to begin with. For some reason they think what we do
is really easy and there was no reason to even winch the vehicle to
begin with. The only thing I hate about this job is is doing tows or
4x4 extracts without the customer there. Every time I have done a 4x4
extract with the customer along there was never any problem with the
bill at all. They were there first hand to see what we did and had no
problem paying what we asked. Waaaaaaaaayyyyyy!!! Waaaaayyyyyyy!
Enough crying for now. Any way that is the report on the Ford. Good
luck to everyone and remember All Pro Towing in Fountain Hills. (480)

Labor is $250-$300 per end. Gears are about $150 per end if you buy them
mail order and higher if you buy in town. That brings you to about $900
without any other upgrades. I do agreee that $1500 is on the high side
unless you are factoring in lockers at the same time. F&R Detroits
would run an additional about $800.

labor rates are running about 250/axle =500
r&p 125/axle -250-300
than if you need new carriers (i do)
than if you are going to tear apart both axles you may as well do all the
bearings and seals and be done with the whole thing.
around 1500 sounds about right. however, Iam going to find a book and learn
how to do this my self. maybe even make a little extra money giving my fellow
JEEPERS SMOKING deals on gear swaps.

Speaking of good deals, Iam a certified locksmith, so if any body has trouble

I was just quoted $2400 for a gear change front and rear plus ARB's in both
diffs..... minus the compressor. That was for my new 2000 TJ so bearings &
seals shouldnt be needed.

I also got a quote of $1100 to do both front and rear r&p's in my CJ7's
axles.... this included new bearings/seals.

Both quotes came from 4wheelers supply.

Hi VJers --

I'm looking for approximate front brake line length for a CJ SOA setup.
I could guess, but if someone has widetrack axles with Wrangler
springs, a ballpark measurement would be appreciated. Without
brakes/dshafts, my CJ is in no position to run up a ramp to get a good
measurement. Also, I could use any recommendations on a place to find
decent prices.

Another question ... Are the steel braided lines worth the $$$? I only
want to do brake lines once.

TIA,
Jeff

Larry,
Don't skimp on the seals! They will have to drag the axles past the seal at least twice while doing the swap and if you don't replace them why would a shop warrant leaky seals? I would also put new bearings, You will be paying shop rate labor for the removal of the old bearings of the old carriers and they putting used bearings on brand new carriers just to save $200 ish.
I trust 4 wheelers supply they have done many things for me and always have been great.

Larry, I have the Teralow in my CJ and it is great. My highway performance is the same but I now have MUCH lower crawl rates. But, now that I am going to 35+ on tires and a spring over, we will be getting rid of my silly 3.3 R-P gears and going to 4.56's and some type of locker in the rear.
I think you can get the Teralow installed for only $250 at 4 Wheelers. That is a deal, we did it and it went great but I had expert help, Bill.

New Gear sets F&R, and Detroits F&R... I'm at 3.73 now, so I'd need new
Carriers to go lower. I figure $1500 as a fair guesstimate for
everything plus labor. MIKE

Tom,

It would be good to have you along. This coming saturday it is. Meeting at
carefree & I17 and departing at 8:30am. If there is rain or snow on the
ground it could add to the pucker factor.

Well - there are 2 ways to go - expensive and more expensive. With 33's, a
4.10 ring/pinion in the diffs will bring you back to stock gearing. If you
want lower gears and/or you plan on larger tires later, than 4.56 would be
your best bet. AND if your thinking lockers - now is the time to do it,
since there's no additional labor involved.

The most expensive route would be to do a Tera Low or Atlas Transfer Case.
Of course, the best thing is to do both a r/p swap and a t-case change. But
this route is very expensive - so you may really want to just look at a r/p
swap.

As far as what you have now, if you call your trusty - dusty Jeep dealer and
give them your VIN#, they'll be able to tell you what your gearing is. A
quicker way is to look at your rear diff...there should be a metal tab
attached to one of the diff cover bolts...and that should have your gear
info on it.

Happy Trails

Doug

I wouldnt skimp on the seals... we both agreed to factor in another $100 for those items. Im not sure what Im going to do with the TJ.... I'll probably sell it in a year when my CJ is done.

Ross,
I was probably going to install the 4:1 kit myself. I have the time to do it as the CJ is nowhere close to being done. Im also going SOA and 35's..... need to find a Wagoneer front D44 first. Right now it has the dreaded 3:31 ratio.

Larry,
Don't skimp on the seals!

Larry Maggio wrote:

I was just quoted $2400 for a gear change front and rear plus ARB's in both
diffs..... minus the compressor. That was for my new 2000 TJ so bearings &
seals shouldnt be needed.
I also got a quote of $1100 to do both front and rear r&p's in my CJ7's
axles.... this included new bearings/seals.

Both quotes came from 4wheelers supply.

Hey Doug
what is your opinion on ring and pinion swap.
Including: r&p, carriers/lockers, seals and bearings.
Just a rough est. would be fine.

One nice thing about the Tera 3" system - is that Tera has a very good trade
up program if you want to go w/ there 4" lift later. One thing to remember
in choosing lists is that a 4" lift will most certainly necessitate a SYE
and CV drive shaft (mo money).
