Now that I have 33" tires I notice the higher gear ratio when in low-low
and crawling. Can someone give me an idea of the best (and cheapest) ways
to lower at least my first Low gearing? Cheap is good right now. (Doug - I
figure you have the answer here.) I don't know what my current ration is
nor how to tell what it is, either.
Thanks.

Organizing and getting the word out to the public that organized Off Highway
groups are very much into land conservation and are not just a bunch of
reckless yahoos that destroy everything in sight takes a lot of work. What I
want to do is get as much public exposure to any type of cleanup/maintenance
effort done by any OHV group in the state that helps keep public access to
public lands -- be it 4x4, ATV, mountain bike, equestrian clubs --- even
offroad racing event organizers.
My boyfriend flew in over the weekend to take care of his taxes and visit. On
the trip over he met a soil conservation expert that grew up in the desert
southwest, but is currenlty working with the USFS in Oregon. His comment about
desert usage was that we are "loving the desert to death." Not what I wanted
to hear, but it describes what has been happening in the Phoenix/Marcopa
County area. The big question is how to turn around this sort of perception.
I hope to see you at one of the cleanups in our neck of the woods, but more
importantly I hope that we VJC members who live in the PHX area can take the
time to help you out when you need it too.

In my experience the Jeep aftermarket stuff is *extremely* expensive
compared to quality aftermarket. Jeep stuff tends to be inferior (ie-skid
plates) unless they install someone else's product. Some dealers will fully
equip your Jeep (Biddulph, for example). If you are not up to doing stuff
yourself find a good four wheel shop in town. Many of our users have
differing opinions, so you are likely to hear some of them after this
email, but I have used both Off Road Unlimited (RuralRoad - Mesa/Tempe-Rock
Bumper and Gibson Cat-back) and Desert Rat (Mesa and Scottsdale -
TerraFlex, PowerTrax/LocRite, DayStar body lift, Currie engine lift). I
really had great experience with both stores. It is not nearly as cheap as
it is if you do it yourself. I installed a Tomken Gas Tank skid plate
myself with ease. I would do more if it were not for the time it takes to
do it (I work too many hours and travel a lot) and that cuts into my
off-roading. My experience and humble opinion only, so wait to hear from
others also.

From Tucson, take I10 to SR60 East. Exit at Power Line Road and go North.
PowerLine merges with Bush Highway. Continue on Bush Highway past Saguaro
Lake Marina turnoff to Butcher Jones Park - a right hand turn. Go to
Butcher Jones - pass through the Fee stop area (not needed unless you plan
to park at the park) go around the parking areas and near the end you will
see a Green Ccattle Gate. We meet on the park side of the Green gate to air
down and disconnect. Then we go through the gate to the Coves.
We are really glad to have your help all the way from Tucson. It will be a
fun day and there is some great off roading and camping there as well. If
you plan to stay over I think there will be several people camping at one
or more of the Coves.

I purchased the new TerraFlex 3"system from OffRoad Unlimited, They have a
store on Broadway in Mesa and Raintree in Scottsdale. TerraFlex makes a
3"lift kit and a 3"lift system. The lift system includes disconnects (the
new ones), steering skid plate and the stuff in the rear (?) also. They
have the same options for a 4" also. The 3 inch installed will take
33x12.50 with no problem and with an additional 1" body lift (cheap) you
can go to 35x15 some day. OffRoad Unlimited will do the 3"system for about
$1300-1500 installed.

Ive seen them in longer rigs. They work great! Problem is in most
jeeps (CJ's, YJ's, TJ's) you're running awful short of room for the
driveshaft. Then again, I have a pre-amc CJ5 so I could be wrong about
later models.

I saw a write up on one in a recent 4x4 magazine (reading at the
supermarket). Looks like a good idea, but it may be a bit of a challenge in
a short wheelbase vehicle due to the length (or lack therof) of the rear
driveshaft. IIRC, in the writeup they mentioned having to lengthen the
front driveshaft and shorten the rear, so those costs need to be figured
into the overall comparison.

Two choices come to mind. A ring and pinion swap to 4.11's will run about $1500 installed. If you don't mind your current gearing for the street then I'd opt for the Teralow kit which reduces the low range in your t-case from 2.72:1 to 4:1. The kit is about $900 and from what I've heard it's not difficult to drop the t-case and replace the front half with the Teralow.

Subject: More on the Coves
This past weekend Tricia and I went out to the Coves to do a pre-run and to
check out the general condition of the Coves. Coves 1 and 2 are by far the
worst of the bunch. We could have a full day of work at these 2 by
themselves. There is also a lot of trash and car parts along the way. Coves
3 and 4 aren't really too bad and the way there is relatively clear of
debris. One or 2 Jeeps could clean both of these up with little trouble.
Cove 5 (Hidden Cove) is also pretty trashed and I think it is the best
cove. It is small and secluded - hard to get to except by boat (and good
off road vehicle). There is often a pontoon boat moored there on the
weekends. There is a cove between 4 and 5 that seems to be accessible only
by water or foot - no roads that I could find.
From there we continued on to Browns tank (No tank any longer) and then
took the long road uphill eventually connecting with FR13. We were going to
go on to the trail head but decided to leave that for another day. The long
road uphill had a full sized Ford pickup off to the side on a narrow part
of a rocky climb. It had lost a wheel and there were no people in sight.
Soon thereafter we were stopped by a Maricopa Sherrif in a Ford Explorer
who asked if we had seen the pickup. We said yes and he proceeded to tell
us that it was stolen, broke down and abandoned. Practically a new truck,
too. A little ways behind him was an AllPro tow truck duallie on its way to
tow the pickup truck back. Lots of luck. He would probably have to drag
that thing up to the top of the hill somehow with only 3 good wheels before
he could repair it. Just getting to it he would have needed a very long tow
cable and he would have to back down the hill to get close enough. Damon
Ruiz works for AllPro and is in AZVJC. Damon, can you tell me how it went??
I am going to lead a ride back in though there some day soon (probably
April) or maybe on Sunday, March 5, after the second day of cleanup. It is
a wonderful ride and great scenery from the top of the hill. Class 2.5.

Hello Everyone,
I'm moving up to Dana 44s on both ends and will be getting 5 new 35x14.5x15
Super Swamper SSRs on 10x15 Forged Aluminum Wheels.
This leaves me with an almost brand new set of Set of 5 33x10.5x15 BFG AT
KOs with the factory Sahara aluminum Wheels.
I have maybe 2,000 miles on the tires and 13,000 miles on the wheels.
The spare tire is brand new and has never been on the pavement (or dirt
<grin>).
I'm asking $600.00 for the set of five, but am willing to consider any
offers.
If you want to see what they look like, go to my web page and click on the

The March 2000 4-Wheel and Off-Road has an article about the Klune-V
Crawler Box, which installs between the tranny and t-case. It's
available in 2.72:1 or 4:1, and of course is 1:1 when disengaged. this
would seriously increase your crawl ratio, and still allow for highway
speeds.

If
you plan to stay over I think there will be several people camping at one
or more of the Coves.

new ones), steering skid plate and the stuff in the rear (?) also. They
have the same options for a 4" also. The 3 inch installed will take
33x12.50 with no problem and with an additional 1" body lift (cheap) you
can go to 35x15 some day. OffRoad Unlimited will do the 3"system for about
$1300-1500 installed.

Subject: Front Tubular Bumper for Sale
Hi all:
I am selling a front Tube Bumper that is powdercoated black and has
never been mounted. The tubing is thicker than normal, I am told, and
includes a grill guard that is welded with 1/4" steel plate with light
tabs. I am at 19th Ave and Northern, and will show it anytime to
anyone who is interested. It was built for an XJ, but will also fit a
ZJ or whatever you have that is a similar size. It's a good deal, so
e-mail me if you are interested at kevin.fell@b....

Who is the manufacturer? I already have a good front bumpr on my ZJ, but I
know people who are interested in tube bumpers that will fit ZJs. I didn't
know anyone was making them!

Class 2.5.

Subject: For Sale, Set of 5 33x10.5x15 BFG AT KOs with Wheels

It's
available in 2.72:1 or 4:1, and of course is 1:1 when disengaged. this
would seriously increase your crawl ratio, and still allow for highway
speeds.
