Subject: Fw: Jeep Question?!?!?!?!

Chris,

I've forwarded this on to my Club as well. I don't have all the details
for you regarding bolt patterns and spline counts for this type of swap,
but the general opinion I've seen of this request on the
rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys newsgroup has always been that you need to
upgrade the transmission.

A clutch upgrade would fall under the tranny upgrade, and if you plan on
towing, the tranny's got to go.

Putting an I6 4.0L would probably be (slightly) easier, since that engine
was used in the Wranglers. Adding a V8 will entail some custom work,
probably including motor mounts, crossmembers, exhaust, major electrical
changes, and driveshafts just to name a few. Check with Advance Adapters
(www.advanceadapters.com) for more detail on what may be needed, and what
swaps work best. Depending on engine and tranny choices, you may also
need an adapter to the transfer case as well.

It is a doable project, but the question is how much money are you
willing to put into it? Remember, a few 4x4 mags detailed installation
of a Viper V10 into a TJ Wrangler last year. Sounds like fun, but
realize that the two Jeeps they detailed were owned by a Minnesota Viking
and by a Cisco router engineer. (His product makes the internet work, so
he's got some available funds...)

Good luck and let me know if there are any more specific questions, I can
probably find an answer for you.

Subject: Jeep Question?!?!?!?!
Message-ID: <12.1bd3109.25df0b9f@a...>

I recently purchased (Oct. 99) a 1997 Jeep Wrangler. I have added a 2"
lift and 31X10.5 tires on 15X10 rims. Before I customize the paint and
interior I want to boost the engine. It currently has the stock 4cyl.
What I am trying to determine is if any of the V8 engines would bolt up
to my 5 speed? I am not picky, the 5.2, 5.0 or new 4.7 would be just
fine. I know a high performance clucth would be needed, but I feel the
need for power, that and I would like to tow a trailer to go camping.
Any information you couls supply would be fantastic.

Thanks
Chris

Lopers has a good price on the Borla header or at least they did a couple
years ago when I got mine.

I think prodyno in tempe could install it especially if you wanted a
custom exhaust the rest of the way back.

Well Len,
Where should I start.. (LOL)

things will go wrong on her ride just like mine.. WWW.NAXJA.ORG
they will answer any and all XJ related questions.. or at least comment on
them... The clutch is hydralic and it is a pain to replace the slave
cylinder (going on 3 times after sat eve) my clutch when functioning is
about 6in, from all the way out to the floor. I think it can be adjusted
from the top of the pedal.. Check the clutch fluid if it is low this will
cause a short pedal sometimes... Hope this helps

Subject: [az_vjc] "new" XJ questions

Hello all

My sister-in-law just bought a '95 Cherokee Sport 4 door (4.0, 5 speed,
75K
miles) and I'm hoping the great Jeep collective can help me with a few
questions:

The clutch engages very low.....about 1 1/2 to 2 inches from the floor.
This seems a bit low to me, but I've never driven a newer Jeep with a
manual
trans. Did these trucks have hydraulic clutches? If so, my guess is
that
the clutch has about a year left on it and will have to be replaced
eventually. Any thoughts or comments? She got a 2 year warranty with a
$100 deductible, so I told her not to worry about the clutch.....just
get it
replaced at the first sign of slipping.

The latch on the console compartment is broken. How difficult/expensive
is
it to replace?

The rear bumper has a telephone pole shaped dent in it. Does anyone
have a
stock XJ bumper cluttering up their garage?

Which rear axle looks like a hexagon when viewed from the rear? I think
the
D44 is the one with squared off edges, but again I'm not that familiar
with
the newer models.

Are there any common trouble spots on this year/model that should be
inspected during the 3 day "take it back" period? I drove it last night
and
the brakes, u-joints, steering, transfer case, tranny, etc all seem to
be in
good shape.

thanks!

Maniatico,
I ran it last two weeks ago with my wife. We took time out to have lunch,
stopped and snooped around, took a few pictures, helped a motorcyclist with
a flat tire, and even pulled a 1/2 ton Chevy 4x4 off of the upper rock ledge
(twice). Even with the AAA motorists assistance stops, we made it up in
about 5.5 hours. We came home via Cleator and I-17.

Getting to the trail is easy, just get off of I17 on the first Sedona exit
and go West until you see the broken arrow sign on the right. Turn at the
sign and follow the road to a dirt parking lot at the end. I may just meet
everyone at the trail head But let me know if anyone is planning a convoy.
Does anyone mind some non-Jeeps tagging along? Do we have a meeting time

Jim,

The Broken Arrow trip was my idea. I was really hoping someone would step up
and lead the run as I dont have any experience leading a group. If no one
wants the position then I'll do the best job I can :)

Anyone wanting to caravan from Phx should meet at the SE Corner of Carefree
& I17... we will be departing there at 8:30am sharp. Hopefully, we can be at
the trailhead by 10:00 and start airing down and disconnecting. Anyone
coming from different areas can meet us there at that time. CB and FRS
channel
4...if you have either.

Broken Arrow Directions:

Head west on the Sedona exit of I-17. Keep heading though some town traffic
past Bell Rock and past the Poco Diablo resort. Look for the sign to Broken
Arrow Estates on Morgan Rd. It will be on your right hand side. The road is
paved for a half-mile and will then turn to dirt. About a 1/4 mile up is
where the trail begins.

Regards,
Larry

Eric,
Doesnt matter to me who you bring. Why might have to break into a few groups
if there is a large turnout.

Subject: 5 on 4.5 to 5 on 5.5 wheel adaptor and Warn Full floater on a TJ

Greetings,

Can anyone point me in the right direction for an adaptor which will convert
5 on 4.5" wheels to 5 on 5.5" wheels?
Here's the reason I need them (and I know it sounds like a kludge, but
listen for a minute <smile>):

This week, I'll be converting my rear axle to 5 on 5.5" via a Warn full
floating kit. I had the Warn full floater 5 on 4.5" version, but broke 3
rear hubs. Warn was kind enough to allow me to send the 5 on 4.5 version
back and receive a 5 on 5.5" at no cost (Warn's warranty service has been
very good to me). I'll be installing the new Warn kit on Wednesday, and also
an ARB and 4.56:1 gears in my rear Dana 44. No problem right? Wrong!
I still have 5 on 4.5" in the front AND, I have a Dana 44 front axle coming
from Currie in two weeks (which will have the Warn 5 on 5.5" conversion
already installed). So... I can drive around with my new 35" Super Swamper
SSRs on the rear of the Jeep with my 33" BFG KOs on the front (no wheeling
obviously since my front axle has the factory 3.73:1 gears in it) and look
really stupid, OR I can find these wheel converters and use them for two
weeks until my Currie front axle comes in.

Can anyone suggest a manufacturer for these wheel adaptors or at least point
me in the right direction?

Thanks

Joe

Thanks

Joe

Subject: Slave cylinder question

Does anyone know where I can get a heavy duty slave cylinder for my XJ?

Also if the carpet is torn where the clutch pedal usually hits the carpet
and the pedal is hitting the floor board will this cause over-extension of
the slave cylinder?

Thanks

Dave,

Sorry to hear about your ongoing troubles with your XJ. You know...I've
got a (supposedly) good driveline, and yours starts...together that's a
Jeep that might run!

From what I've seen of the master and slave cylinders, they have a lot
more movement available than the clutch pedal is capable of. However, I
was more concerned with the master cylinder when I looked into that
question, since mine had leaked and damaged my fusebox again. I don't
know of any 'heavy-duty' slave cylinders, but would recommend this as one
of those times to cough up the extra couple bucks to get new dealer parts
instead of rebuilt AutoClone stuff.
