Can you cut a notch in your crossmember? If that doesnt work check some of
the local fab shops.... they should be able to build you a functional
crossmember that allows for the front driveline clearance.
Good luck,

Subject: Re: "new" XJ questions
Len,
Sounds like a nice Jeep! The 'collective' approves. (Sorry, bad Star
Trek humor there)
Anyway, the XJ does use a hydraulic clutch system. The master cylinder
is on the firewall under the hood, little cylinder tipped back a bit.
Make sure that is filled to the top line with clean brake fluid. They
will leak, and if it is engaging at 1.5", that is a bit low. I've always
noticed mine will begin to pull at about that height, but doesn't really
engage until higher up. Is that what this one does? The slave cylinder
may also leak on that system, but the good news is that it is external,
and does not require dropping the tranny to replace it. Check carefully
around both cylinders and the pushrod for the master cylinder for leaks.
The latch on the center console is attached to the lid, but I believe it
is removable from there with little effort. Mine still works, so I never
really looked into that. There is also a striker on the box itself, are
you sure the two are aligned okay?
Sorry, can't help you with the bumper.
The Dana44 has the hexagonal cover, but so does the Chrysler 9 1/4". I
am not sure when they started offering that rear axle, but it is also a
strong one. The Dana 35 has an egg-shaped cover. See the Tech section
of azvjc.web.com for a couple pictures showing the two axles.
The 4.0L has a bad habit of cracking exhaust manifolds, but check with
the dealer, I thought there may be a TSB that covers those, even past the
normal warranty period. Engine mounts can and will tear, so keep an eye
on that.
By 95 they had fixed a lot of the earlier issues I have seen (radiator
bottle, internal clutch slave, clutch master leaked on the fusebox), so
it should be a fairly reliable Jeep. If it's been even
halfway-maintained, the engines good for at least another 75k, and if the
rest seems good to you, all I can say is enjoy!

FWIW, you can get AzVJC info in 3 forms:
1- e-mail
2- digest
3- Web site
To change your set up, go to the e-groups site - click on "group

I found a set of TJ wheels. Thanks Rick! And now I want to get rid of my ZJ

wheels are scraped and chunked but still hold air. They make good spare tire
wheels. So.... if anyone is interested let me know. One has already been

Greetings Everyone,
On March 23rd through the 26th, I will be leading an expedition down into
the interior of Mexico, to a remote location on a beautiful sandy beach on
the Sea of Cortez. There will be some incredible four-wheeling on some
trails which range from class 2 to class 4+.
The reason for this trip is for me to combine some four-wheeling, relaxing,
and SCUBA diving in a single trip.
It takes about 8 to 9 hours to get to the remote location, but I promise
you; you'll be hard pressed to find a more beautiful or remote location to
camp, swim, and four-wheel.
If anyone is interested in going on this trip for any (or all) of the days,
I will prepare a complete agenda which will outline the entire trip start to
finish.
Regards,
Joe West

I picked up the permit for March 4 and 5 Coves cleanup from the Forest
Rangers, Mesa. While I was there the ROD (Ranger On Duty) told me that they
really appreciated this kind of effort - that there is a big move afoot to
close more and more roads (which we all know too well) because they just
can't keep up with the cleanup. Two areas that he pointed out are Bulldog
Canyon and Four Peaks. Four Peaks Road has refrigerators, washers, stoves
and several junked cars along the way from the Cline Hiking Trailhead to
the Mud Springs Trailhead. There is also a lot of trash. Although they
can't very well close off Four Peaks Road he did say it had gotten way out
of hand and they don't know how to control it. Bulldog Canyon is another
story. It is already closed unless you get a permit. The permit process has
kept the inner part of the trail relatively clean but the 3 entrances (for
about a mile into each) are pitiful. Some group (non-4wheel group) is doing
a cleanup outside the entrances this month but it is after the gates that
the problem begins. He said there was talk of closing the trail off to foot
traffic and maybe to all traffic. The gun shells and beer cans are ankle
deep just after the entrance ways, apparently. I told him that after the
Coves was cleaned up I would try to get the group to schedule an April or
May cleanup of Bulldog. There are a couple of nice spots to camp in there
and it is relatively close to many of us. I'm game and I will organize this
one also if there is interest. I'll bring the topic up again after the
Coves weekend.

Thanks for the information. It sounds like four separate cleanups are in
order.
Perhaps a schedule can be put in place at the ASA4WDC level.
* Sycamore Creek
* Coves/Rolls OHV
* Bulldog
* Four Peaks Rd.
I will present this to the association members in the next newsletter.

I'll help with all 4. I am a member of the ASA4WDC also so a joint "multi-club cleanup" would be very effective and would make good press. Just think - if we can get several of the ASA4WDC member clubs and AZ_VJC together these could become great events with a purpose and a result. We have a great deal of control in keeping our great local roads open.

and several junked cars along the way from the Cline Hiking Trailhead to
the Mud Springs Trailhead.

Jon's trip to the ranger station brought out a good point:
there are areas that need clean up that we are unaware of.
Wish there was a USFS or Parks & Rec webpage that could be
devoted to "Areas that need clean up". That way, many
different clubs could choose an area to work on each
weekend.
Just a few hours of cleaning makes a big difference.

One of my goals this year as the ASA4WDC Land Use/Conservation Chair is to
create a web page that covers this sort of information as well land use news
and other conservation efforts. Not only 4x4 organizations but other clubs
that also perform cleanups in different parts of the state. It's a big
project, but doing it on the internet should make it less formidable.

Linda, it is important to get this word to outlets that are
not already friendly to our activities. You should try to
get one or more of the news channals and the AZ Republic to
cover it. Our websites are not of interest except to our
current supporters. We need help outside of our ranks.

Linda,
With the issues and concerns that we are now up against as four wheelers,
it is important that the public sees us for our values, rather than
listening to the rumors. Having the facts printed and put in front of their
eyes is a powerful tool. Even in this small community where I live, the
concerns are great. But with the help of the press, the local 4x4 clubs are
doing their best to make the public more aware of our goals. This clipping
is about the Prowlers 4x4 club, and goes along way in helping push the
representation of the quality that true four wheelers possess. The Arizona
SideWinders, are also participating in charity events and also working hand
in hand with other local clubs like the Prowlers to improve the face value
of our "title" as, off-road enthusiasts. The local paper here in Safford is
very supportive of this critical issue, so if you have anything that you
feel would be of value to have in the paper, please feel free to send it to
me and I will do my best to get it published in our local paper.
Reading the recent postings about the efforts being made to organize clean
up outings in other areas, is very impressive. It takes allot of time and
sacrifice to volunteer ones time to these efforts. Linda and Jon, you both
have my support and appreciation for your efforts. I will do my best to
attend the clean up outings. It is quite a drive for me, but I would love to
participate in this noble effort, as well as meet you all again.
I want you to know that your efforts and actions are making a difference.
Even though most of the public may not notice at this point, other clubs are
taking notice, and gaining numbers in enrollment. Some in my area are
actually taking time to research and join for reasons such as the concerns
we show towards our lands and community. Keep pushing and Keep
Smiling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please take a look at this attachment, it is very impressive. Sorry about
the quality of the insert. I am still learning. But I think you can read it
OK.

Subject: Trip from hell.
Me and my friend Jason set out to go hike and explore FR18 today. Some of you that went last August (?) will remember it is a beutifull area. This is one long trip, You have to drive to Seven Springs then north on FR 29 which is unpaved for about 30 miles, then east on FR 269 about another 5 miles to reach the FR 18 head, nothing to get a late start at. We were finally about 2 1/2 hours later coming within stinkin 5 miles of reaching FR18 and BAM! So I stop the Jeep and look underneath to find the shock mount has broke... After all the driving we have to turn around and start heading back... We decide to take FR 269 back west which 28! slow miles later will dump you out on I17. Two hours later about a mile from I17 I start hearing this sputtering noise. Jason and I both comment that it sounds like an exhause leak at the doughnut, just outside of the exhaust manifold. No big deal, we will pull over and tighten up the bolts, so we start to pull over and BAM! SPUTTER SPUTTER... Were think oh ^&%(*, now what... Nothing was loose BUT the exhuast pipe hanger that comes out of the tranny mount had pulled away from the pipe and taken a big chunka pipe with it! So now we are cruisin down I17, swaying all over with one wheel not sticken to the pavement, and I'm trying to hit mach one to outrace the noise thinking hell, I sound like a frigin jet airplane anyways...Of course trying not to let the engine go under compression to keep the valves from burning up. Eventually deaf and an hour later we hit Phoenix, just in time for rush hour, also relising we have got to pass through that long tunnel which is only going to serve to amplify my exhaust woes... I got so many dirty looks from cars next to us today. Finally, 3 1/2 hours after hitting I17 we arrived home. What a waste of gas.
If anyone who has a welder would like to get some practice on my shock mount and patching my exhaust hole I would certianly appreciate some help. I'll buy the drinks or whatever....
Oh ya, I love my Jeep :)

Mr. O'Boyle - We have had a report that unknown parties may have closed
the
access to the Agua Fria River on the west side of the Camelback Road
Bridge.
The river-bottom land is private land and land withdrawn to the Maricopa
County
Flood Control District. The riverbottom is not public land nor is it
open for
OHV use. All public use in the riverbottom is trespassing. BLM
administers 80
acres of public land on the north and south sides of the western bridge
abutment, not in the river bottom.
Maricopa County, the Sheriff's Department, Maricopa County Air Quality
and DEQ,
and private land owners have asked BLM to close BLM lands to all
mechanized
access due to air quality violations (dust) and criminal activity. We
are
considering doing this currently, but have not closed our lands to OHV
at this
time.

Agian,
I may not be able to make the Broken Arrow trip next weekend unless I get
the stupid thing fixed.. After this is fixed I am going down to Jeep and
applying for a job as a line mechanic :). I have replaced almost everything
on my Jeep since last Febuary.(excpt engine/trans/transfercase/axles) I am
getting better and better every time, Thank god for life time warranties on
parts.. This being the third slave cylinder in one year is getting seriously
on my nerves. Any one have a clue to why mine keeps going through these
slave cylinders. I replace the last one on Dec 4th (my b-day and the t-shirt
run) I missed out on both.. Any clues to what may cause this problem my XJ
is having?
Thanks in advance

I found a set of TJ wheels. Thanks Rick! And now I want to get rid of my ZJ
factory snowflakes. 15x7 wheels with the same backspacing as TJs. These
wheels are scraped and chunked but still hold air. They make good spare tire
wheels. So.... if anyone is interested let me know. One has already been
adopted.

Which reminds me. I need to replace the exhaust mainfold on the ZJ (4.0l) . I
am considering a Tri-Y, but will settle for the factory part. Does anyone know
of a place that does this sort of stuff? It doesn't look like a tough job,
but I just don't have the time!

If anyone is interested in going on this trip for any (or all) of the days,
I will prepare a complete agenda which will outline the entire trip start to
finish.
Regards,
Joe West

Subject: Coves cleanup

* Sycamore Creek
* Coves/Rolls OHV
* Bulldog
* Four Peaks Rd.

Jon's trip to the ranger station brought out a good point:
there are areas that need clean up that we are unaware of.
Wish there was a USFS or Parks & Rec webpage that could be
devoted to "Areas that need clean up". That way, many
different clubs could choose an area to work on each
weekend.
Just a few hours of cleaning makes a big difference.

create a web page that covers this sort of information as well land use news

that also perform cleanups in different parts of the state. It's a big

Linda,
With the issues and concerns that we are now up against as four wheelers,
it is important that the public sees us for our values, rather than
listening to the rumors.

Mr. O'Boyle - We have had a report that unknown parties may have closed
the

The river-bottom land is private land and land withdrawn to the Maricopa

Flood Control District. The riverbottom is not public land nor is it
open for
OHV use. All public use in the riverbottom is trespassing. BLM
administers 80
acres of public land on the north and south sides of the western bridge

Maricopa County, the Sheriff's Department, Maricopa County Air Quality

Do you have any explanation to why the Agua Fria River bottom at
Camelback
rd. was closed?
Thank you

Subject: Slave cylinder went south
Agian,
I may not be able to make the Broken Arrow trip next weekend unless I get
the stupid thing fixed..
Dave (AZXJ)

Does anyone happen to have a set of GPS coordinates for the Terminator? I
thought I had them and can't find them. I might be coming out a bit later
in the morning and don't want to hold anyone up.
