Subject: Some Maricopa land off-limits to drivers
This is such bunk! Closing roads due to too much dust!
This is ARIZONA! This is the DESERT!
PHOENIX (AP) - The state land commissioner banned motorized vehicles
from 1,390 acres of trust land in Maricopa County yesterday.
Land Commissioner Michael Anable said the closure was an effort to keep
dust down. Maricopa County has been targeted by federal officials for
high levels of particulate pollution, which is created by fine dust
particles hanging in the air.
The land closed to motorized vehicles includes:
* 650 acres northwest of Cave Creek Road and Pinnacle Peak Road, north
of Phoenix.
* 190 acres southeast of the same intersection.
* 550 acres northwest of Happy Valley Road and 51st Avenue, also north
of Phoenix.
In all, 4,100 of the 227,000 acres of state trust land in the Maricopa
County pollution-designated area are closed to motor vehicles

I'm surprised that's all they closed. Of course, some developer will come
along and build water sucking golf courses and that will be OK, we have
water to spare, but we can't allow dust...
I wonder if our efforts at desert cleanup prevented the Apache Junction area
from being closed. The dumpster was almost full--they were going to arrange
for another weekend to put another dumpster out. Wouldn't it be nice if
that's all it took to keep land open...just keep it clean?

Subject: "new" XJ questions
Hello all
My sister-in-law just bought a '95 Cherokee Sport 4 door (4.0, 5 speed, 75K
miles) and I'm hoping the great Jeep collective can help me with a few
questions:
The clutch engages very low.....about 1 1/2 to 2 inches from the floor.
This seems a bit low to me, but I've never driven a newer Jeep with a manual
trans. Did these trucks have hydraulic clutches? If so, my guess is that
the clutch has about a year left on it and will have to be replaced
eventually. Any thoughts or comments? She got a 2 year warranty with a
$100 deductible, so I told her not to worry about the clutch.....just get it
replaced at the first sign of slipping.
The latch on the console compartment is broken. How difficult/expensive is
it to replace?
The rear bumper has a telephone pole shaped dent in it. Does anyone have a
stock XJ bumper cluttering up their garage?
Which rear axle looks like a hexagon when viewed from the rear? I think the
D44 is the one with squared off edges, but again I'm not that familiar with
the newer models.
Are there any common trouble spots on this year/model that should be
inspected during the 3 day "take it back" period? I drove it last night and
the brakes, u-joints, steering, transfer case, tranny, etc all seem to be in
good shape.
thanks!

Here are a couple of comments on the Coves Cleanup:
1. Scheduled for March 4 (and 5th for those with lots of time). 9AM at the
green gate at Buther Jones Beach.
2. I think I have gotten ACE Hardware to donate trash bags, but we can
never have too many trash bags, so bring some if you have any.
3. Does anyone else know of a store willing to donate something for use or
as a prize for the most trash, strangest piece of garbage, most Budweiser
cans (that should be easy!)
4. Bring gloves and a great idea is one of those little garden rakes for
picking stuff up.
5. I will be getting a permit from Mesa Rangers tomorrow.
6. 20 decals to the first 20 people to ask for one - at the start.
7. I would like a couple of volunteers to lead a cleanup group to each of
the first 4 coves. Any volunteers??
8. I will post directions next week for anyone who hasn't been to the
Coves. (Is there anyone who hasn't been there?)
Thanks

The reason for the Currie 9" being a reverse cut rear is the "high pinion"
basically the pinion is has been flipped to decrease shaft angle. I have
looked at this axle closely, looking on news groups the first axles did
suffer a heat problem on the highway. This is suppose have been taken care
of, although 4.50 gears and higher still seem to have some problems. If you
go with this option let me know I am looking into it in the next year to
year and a half.

Subject: Rusty Offroad Skid Pan
I just installed an Rusty Offroad XJ Transfercase Skid pan.
The product is made from 3/16" steal as opposed to the 1/8" some
companies use. This istall requires the drilling of 5 holes for the
mounting.
Two of the holes must be drilled completely through the transmission
cross member. Not a totally easy task but not bad.
I have two complaints with the product. The first one is the holes for
the bolts to the crossmember were too small for the bolts provided so I
had to redrill the holes. Not a major problem but shows some lack of
quality control.
The second problem is that one of the bolts needs to go through the
crossmember so close to the exhaust that I had to cut the bolt down to
keep it from hitting the exhaust. This is also where the earlier (87-90
or later) cherokees have a clearance ramp to keep the exaust from
hitting. This keeps the bolt from having a full surface to torque
against. Have to see how it hold up the first time I skip a rock.
It does cover much more stuff than the stock skid pan I had. Some of you
may remember I ripped it off on the last Crown King run.
Overall it appears to be a reasonable buy for the $99 it costs since it
appears to be the lowest cost 3/16" skid pan for the XJ.

To all 4-wheelers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ROCK CRAWLING CHAMPIONSHIPS UPDATE.......
The HEADQUARTERS has been changed to the BEST WESTERN HOTEL in Gold Canyon.
(5 miles east of Apache Junction. Hwy 60 and Kings Ranch Rd) We have just
found out the Grand Hotel had not reserved rooms for the meeting and/or
awards nor a block of rooms for competitors.
NEW HEADQUARTERS
Best Western Hotel
8333 East Sunrise Sky Drive
Gold Canyon, AZ 85219
480 671-6000
(HWY 60 and KINGS RANCH ROAD)
Rooms for 2 persons are $75.00. Suites are $85.00 When calling for
reservations please mention ARCA.
I STILL NEED APPROXIMATELY 20 - 25 VOLUNTEERS EACH DAY TO JUDGE AND WORK AT
THE
OBSTACLES............ WE COULD USE YOUR HELP!!
Please pass this on to anyone you think is interested and/or wants to be
involved. ARCA
will be calling each of the competitors to inform them of the change but I'm
sure there are a number of spectators and/or workers that will be
interested. The mandatory meeting for workers will be at the Best Western
Hotel at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening, March 9, 2000. Judges and workers will
be given their assignment at the Thursday meeting and Ranch will talk to you
about "judging" and "scoring". This meeting is mandatory.
Judges will need to be at their assigned obstacle each day at 8:45 a.m. to
set flags. The competitors will be arriving approximately 9:30 a.m.
Camping will be allowed at three State Trust Land sites for those that want
to camp. Along Cottonwood Canyon Road off Hwy 79, Mile Post 144 - 145;
along Mineral Mtn. Rd off Hwy 60 at Mile Post 216; and on the south side of
Hwy 60 at Kings Ranch Road directly across the highway from the hotel
headquarters.
Reminding you to bring each day: Water, lunch & chair........ watch the
weather reports..........

I'm so upset right now, I can't see straight. I guess chalk one up to progress, we aren't a little "town" anymore. Although dust was the reason they gave, I think it had more to do with "political" and developmental reasons than anything. It appears whomever is at the helm realizes you just have to sell the public a believable story, not the truth, to gain approval. Although we may know different, that doesn't mean John Q.

Thanks

FWIW, you can get AzVJC info in 3 forms:
1- e-mail
2- digest
3- Web site
To change your set up, go to the e-groups site - click on "group site" -
click on "change subscription".

For anyone that is interested, I recently swapped out my limited slip rear
carrier out of my AMC Model 20 and went to an open carrier with a Lockright.
So if anyone would want to purchase a limited slip fully loaded carrier for a
good price, let me know. Might be a good swap for someone wanting good road
manors and improved off road-ability when compared to their open carrier Model
20.

Camping will be allowed at three State Trust Land sites for those that want
to camp. Along Cottonwood Canyon Road off Hwy 79, Mile Post 144 - 145;
along Mineral Mtn.

Average does. Be Good. Later.
