Me and a friend did forest road 172 and continued on 650 back to the highway a couple weekends ago. The scenery on these to roads are fantastic, it would be a great day trip with also lots of good camping spots. The road itself is really ruff although I would only rate it a light 2.5. There is one small section that is a little tuffer (muguls (sp) on and incline hill), it is just after entering forest road 650.
Does anyone know of a write up on these two roads? I just wanted to see what other people had to say.

Hi Richard,

You didnt by chance live up here in Flagstaff before did you?

The trails in and around Parker range from 3.0 to 4.5 approx. the trail in
Calif. we went to was named Snakebite CAnyon and is a solid 4.0 it is half
way between the damn and the parker crossing on the california side

The Arizona trail we went on was Presidents Choice...it is a narrow trail
probably a 3.5 with side trails in the 4.0 to 4.5 range.

Other club members went on other trails and maybe they can give you more
info on them...you can also contact the Parker 4 wheelers they manage the
trails and are a wonderful group to deal with.

Do any of you have any expertise with Q-jets? I have been fighting my Carter
AFB to get good off road performance but gave up and installed a Q-jet 795
w/electric choke. The problem is that it Idles very fast and I can't slow it
down via the idle screw. I did a bad thing in that I removed and
reinstalled the factory set screw next to the power piston. I later read
that this is to never be adjusted or removed. Could this be my problem? The
thing seems to make my Chevy 350 run great but it idles at 2600 RPM. Any
help or Ideas would be great. Thanks.

Scott,

You don't want to have *any* reverse cut axle in the rear of your vehicle.
Reverse cut axles belong up front only. If you drive a reverse cut axle on
the rear (or conversely; a regular cut axle on the front) of a vehicle, you
end up driving the ring and pinion on the coast side of the gears instead of
the drive side; resulting in weakened axle and opening up another failure
mechanism in the differential.

Stick with a reverse cut axle up front, and a standard axle in the rear and
you'll be better off.

Joe West

Yup...what Joe said. W/ a reverse cut on the rear, your running on the weak
side of your r/p....and this is not advisable. Some do it to reduce
driveline angle, but it's not a good plan...esp if your spending that kinda
$$ on a new axle.

Joe,
I run a reverse cut Dana 60 and am very pleased with it. I think if you have a very high Horse power motor you might have problems, but I have a pretty torquey 6 cyclinder and 130:1 final drive ratio and the only things I have broken are a front axle and some transfercase gears. Both of these were due mostly to pilot error or bad judgement.

I have done this trail (I think it's dubbed Montana

It would be a great family trip. My friend did it in

Rick,

My 98TJ has been leaking in the same place. One shop told me it would
take 4 hours labor so I passed. The leak is very small so I don't think
it is worth it to be fixed. I worry more about dirt getting in the axle
than the loss of fluid.

On my d30 I had the same leak. It cost me 90$ for the reapair and fluid
replacement and Drivin-high on Country club. I think if you had a seal
puller you could easealy do it yourself. I think the part cost me 7$...I
drove along time on that leak and had no problems.

I did this repair by myself a couple of years ago on
my old Jeep. This was a major PITA! The old seal came out
easily but the new seal was very stubborn getting set inside!
If my newer Jeep leaks there again,
I would be happy to let a machanic have at it.

I am still looking for factory plain steel 15x7 TJ wheels. If anyone has a set
gathering dust in their garage...... let me know!

I have marbles in my tranny.... They first appeared in 5th gear... Now it is going down the line from 4th and now in 3rd..... It is an ax15 I believe (92yj 4cyl). It's also worse when the clutch is engaged. Does anyone know the price of a rebuil and someone reliable to do it? Or another tranny option... Right now it will be whichever is the cheapest.

If it's a 4cyl it's probably an AX5, I believe.

When my AX15 went south I saved a buncho $$$ by pulling it myself and
taking it to someone in P4W to rebuild at his house (his day job is at
Lee Myles Tranny.) It ended up being $300- $150 patrs, $150 labor (or
something like that.) While I was in there I replaced the clutch with a
Centerforce dual friction ($200), replaced the throwout/slave thingy,
and pilot bearing (like $30 I think.) Tranny jack (needed to reinstall,
used a floor jack to get it out) was $25 (1 day.) So, I guess it ended
up being like $550. I thought that pulling the tranny out and
reinstalling might be a 2 person job, but it worked OK as a 1 person
one.
