Subject: Half-fast report on Crown King run

We had 6 Jeeps, 5 TJ's and one Cherokee. I am sorry but I am not
very good with names (but I do remember the Jeeps), and I apologize to
those whose names I either don't remember or get wrong. We left the
meeting spot about 8:20 and proceeded to the trailhead after stopping
to air down and disconnect. The first half of the trail (before the
lunch stop in the National Forest) was pretty uneventful, although at
the first obstacle, Andy (black TJ) managed to get slightly sideways
and had to deal with the pucker factor for a few moments until he got
it straightened out. Everyone else did well on that hill (and all the
rest of the first half of the trail) including the Tan unlifted (but
rear locked) Cherokee (sorry, I completely spaced the name), and Dale
in the stock TJ. We stopped for a break at the wide spot just inside
the Forest boundry, and unfortunately, Dale found a spike in the ground
that put a nice gash in the sidewall of his left front. I got a chance
to use my newly purchased 12 volt impact wrench to help change it. (It
worked great, made quick work of a tire change). We then started the
second half of the trail. At the first obstacle (the 2 foot step with
no bypass), there was a non-lifted, stock tires, extended cab Z71 truck
high centered on the rocks when we got there (DUH, when will they learn
that those trucks are too low and long to make it over those rocks?)
After about 45 minutes work, we managed to get him over the hump and it
was our turn. The first 3 TJ's went over OK, but the Cherokee got high
centered. After a little tugging forward and then backwards, we got
him unstuck and his next line proved better and he cleared the rocks.
(learned later that the rock did take their toll on his transfer case
skid) Dale got the stock TJ hung up pretty good, sprouting a brake
fluid leak from the right front. Luckily, it was just a fitting that
got loosened by a rock, and stopped leaking when tightened. After
getting pulled free, he got a better line on the rocks and walked up it
without a problem. I had the benefit of being tail end Charlie for
this obstacle, and was able to duplicate the successful line and
cleared it with no problem. The rest of the trip was pretty
uneventful, but on one kind of loose hill, I did have to back up and
give it a second try. The score on this run is Tomken gas tank skid -
1, Skid-row engine skid - 1, rocks - 0 :-) All in all, I think a good
time was had by all, I know that I had a great time, and thanks to Andy
for putting it together. (Hopefully my better half will be able to come
along next time)

I found (and bought 2 of, one for the car and one for the Jeep) a
12 volt impact wrench. It comes with the sockets for the common lugnut
sizes, and unless some gorilla with a lug wrench has over-torqued your
lugnuts, will easily loosen and re-tighten you lugnuts should you need
to change a tire. It came from a company called Damark, www.damark.com
, and is listed under Auto tools. The cost is 39.99 plus shipping (a
little high at 9.99). the item number is 40380-686437.

You can add the fact that the high centering of the XJ bent the
crossmember up about 1/4"-1/2". Time for a new crossmember and skidpan
but at least the trasfer case is unhurt. Teach me to try the high line.

Subject: Table Mesa Camping Trip Report......

Hey guys,

This weekend was a blast. We all met up at 10am at the Southeast corner of I-17 and Carefree Highway instead of Northeast like I mentioned in my earlier posts. Melinda screwed up and the others followed suit. There we ten Jeeps total for the run, Scott and Theresa in his TJ, Melinda in her TJ, Rick Van Hazel and Amanda in his TJ, Tom in his XJ, Larry in his TJ, Felix and wife in their TJ, Chip and his friend(sorry, I forgot his name) in Chip's YJ, Nick(Felix's son) and his girlfriend in NIck's TJ, Aminda and her friend in her YJ and last but not least, me and my girlfreind in my TJ. Everything went as scheduled, we left the lot at about 10:30 and went straight to the trailhead. Nick left the group for about a half hour to try to repair his spare tire that had a hole in it and later joined back up with us. I wasn't too sure where FR41 begins because I have only taken it from Seven Springs to I-17 but nevertheless, I found it. There were some really nice sights along the way, including the actual Table Mesa. The first real obsticle that we found off the trail came when I saw an opening to go down to a dried up riverbed, it was a rock that actually tested articulation really well. Scott K was the first to try it and never had a tire leave the ground. Rick was next and as with Scott, his flex was enough to keep all fours on the ground. Tom wanted to try it next and succeeded in making it up. His right rear tire came off the ground about 6 inches. That was the last of people that wanted to try it so we headed down the road some more. The next obsticle that was found to be kind of amusing came almost where FR41 meets FR24. It was a huge sand pit type thing with really loose gravel. Scott K was again the first to try it. He got about 3/4 of the way up and started spinning his tires. At the same time, Rick drove up from behind Scott and succeeded in making short work of the hill. After one more attempt, Scott managed to make it up the hill. Sorry Scott, sometimes, you have to let someone else steal the glory :-). Tom was the next to try the hill and managed to make it about 3/4 of the way up and started spinning his tires. He decided to back down and we left for the camp site. We reached the camp site at about 2:30 and set up our tents. A couple of us decided to go out romping after everything was set up. I remembered seeing a really nice trail before on this road so we set out to find it. After about 30 minutes we got sick of looking and decided to take a trail that we had found on the way. Larry and Tom at this point decided to head for home. The particular trail turned out to offer nothing of interest to us so we decided to take a powerline road instead. The powerline trail seemed to have a little more to offer than we were expecting. We took the trail for about 2 miles when we started seeing little rock piles in the middle of the road. Since none of us speak rock language and there were no closed signs, we just kept going. After about another half mile, we saw it. The best obsticle of the trip. An old bridge that was rotted out with only half the wood remaining and nothing but beams on both sides. Fortunatly, the beams were spaced out just bearly enough to allow a Jeep to get across. If you misjudged the beams, it was about a 15-18 foot drop. Scott K did all the spotting and Chip's YJ was the only vehicle to do the obsticle. After he made it across, he scouted ahead on the trail looking for a way out to the main road. It was getting close to dark and we just wanted a way out. Chip returned about 15 minutes later and informed us that it was a dead end. From that point, Scott again spotted Chip across the bridge and we left back for the camping site. Scott decided to bail home when we got to the main road so the rest of us headed back. The ladies back at the site had made a fire(good job by the way) and we warmed up pretty quickly. The camping portion of the trip was maybe the funnest part. We all sat around the fire and talked and got to know each other. Some of us decided to take a little of the chill out of the air with a bottle of rum that Rick had brought with him After about five or six shots of rum, things started to become a blur to me but I do know one thing, we all had a fun night. I'm hoping that we can do this again sometime. It was a pleasure meeting everyone that showed up. Since my girlfriend was one of the only people to bring a camcorder, I will be endevouring to make some stills of the fun stuff as well as maybe an mpg or two. Hopefully I can get them done sometime in the next day or so. If I don't find a job, that won't be a problem. Anyone know of any job openings for an out of work techie? Well, that's it....hope my first trail report EVER doesn't put you all to sleep or anything. Hope to take a run with you all again soon.

Kathy and I are interested, the TJ is 2"lifted, disco's, LSD rear, and stock 30x9.50. Any problems there? How is the possibility of a little bit later starting time (we live in Cordes Junction) and meeting at 7:00 makes us get up awfully early for a Saturday.

Todd,

Is this "THE" Terminator off of Table Mesa Road (heading West)?

I was under the impression that this trail is considered world class rock
crawling Jeep bait. I walked it a couple of weeks ago and there was more
dino oil marking the way in/out than I had ever seen on any trail before.
The person I was with at the time was telling me that he has watched drivers
pretty much destroy their vehicle in 15 minutes on that trail.

I was just asking because of the 3+, 4 rating you gave it.

Yep! This is THE Terminator. We walked it on Saturday since we didn't have
time to run it. I talked to a guy who ran it a few years ago. He said that it
has progressively gotten easier over the years because so many people have run
it. But don't be fooled. It is still a 4 in my book. Todd just likes to make
it seem easy!! ;-) Off from that there is a trail called Anaconda. I've posted

You could go but I would SERIOUSLY doubt you would make it past the
first obstacles. I am running 4" lift, locker in the front, limited
slip in the rear, 33X14 Swamper Boggers and I am very concerned that I
might not make it. So I think the TJ might be over its head here. I
mean no disrespect. Believe me I've seen nearly stock TJs do more than
alot of other vehicles, but Terminator is pretty nasty. You could
always come along and decide once you get there. At the very least you
would get to watch some people tear up some nice vehicles ;-). Raw Deal
would be a perfect run for you. It is actually just off the dirt road
that leads to Terminator. We could show you the way. I am going to
post pictures of Raw Deal on Photopoint. Look for another email to the
group on Raw Deal.

OK, then. We'll see you two on the trails.

No.

Wait.

There won't be any.

Too bad you two chose _not_ to stand up for what was right.

P.S. The group description DOES state that the group is for "off-road
trips and related local Jeep and backcountry topics" and "a love for
off-roading Arizona." While Glamis isn't quite AZ, you're very naive if
you think what happens there will not affect our local Jeep and
backcountry access.

We had a great time and no casualties can be reported. Probably won't be
able to say the same after having run Terminator in two weeks!!!!!!!

Sure hope you like Chrome and Pretty Paint Jobs, because that's all
we'll be talking about here once all the land is finished being closed

A trip for the record books. I've sent some photos to the group. The trails
shown in the photos were in the 4 to 4.5 range (there were some 3 to 4
trails also that some did). All in all, there were about 35 Jeeps on Sat.
doing 3 runs, and probably 25 or so on Sun (3 runs). The trails were
fantastic, and the Parker 4 Wheelers were great.

There was some body damage on most of the trips, and some mechanical
breaks...including a broken axle, broken tie rod end, busted axle u-joint,
separated driveshaft, broken water pump and radiator, and several tires off
the bead.

Can't wait for Desert Splash in Nov!

Doug

No...it's not on line, as best I know. I'd think you could get a copy from
the Cave Creek Ranger District (480-595-3300). It's about 54 pages long.

Comments concerning the Assessment should be sent to :

Photos from the Crown King run Sunday Feb. 6
<http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=22547&a=1757799>

We had a great run with mostly minor mishaps and a bit of under body
destruction. We faired better than the full size Z71 that got high
centered, however. We spent a good 30 minutes trying to get him dislodged.
We spent another 30 minutes getting 2 of our own dislodged also, and after
a busted brake line scare on Dale's TJ (it was actually a loosened bleed
valve!) we were on our way with no further problems.

Great run and well led, Andy. Many thanks.

These were captured from Digital video taken with a Sony TVR315. If anyone
on that ride wants a copy of the video on CD, email me your address. There
is some great footage of everyone.

Hey All,

I want to thank all of you who helped me and or spotted for me this weekend
in parker....it was a great trip and there are two things I learned...Its
great to wheel witha good group of people.....A 3" lift is not enough! and
31" tires can get you into toruble!

On saturday we ran snake bite and drove all the way through didnt need to
winch as a few of the landcruisers did....but did have to stack a few rocks
to get my bumper over a few of the obsticles...all went well until a
fullsized Chevy decided to use all the HP his 454 would put out and spun a
tire of the rim and lodged himself firmly into a crevice on one of the water
falls.....2 hours later we where moving again..only one ding on saturday

Sunday we ran presidents choice trail...very tight and very few spotters on
some of the trail...here I suffered the most damage....bit by a
tree....wedged between several canyon walls....the rear quarters took the
worst of it...I think it is time for some aluminium diamond plate quarter
panel guards.....I ran the first day with just the front locked and the
second day with both locked....The gearless in the front worked flawlessly
both days.....the arb with co2 power worked great the second day....now I
just have to put in the switch and selenoid to activate the valve and all
will be grand!

All in all it was a great weekend..thanks again to you all and maybe see you
guys in lake havasu next month?
