Subject: Red Creek Environmental Assessment
The E.A. is fresh off the presses on Red Creek. The objective is to
"...minimize or eliminate the adverse impacts of FR18 on riparian habitat
along Red Creek". Basically, the proposal states that "Forest Road #18
would be closed or access would be limited". The study lists 6
alternative...with the Cave Creek District Ranger being responsible for
deciding which alternative will be implemented. the alternatives deal w/
grazing policy as well as possible road closure. For the purpose of this
e-mail, I'll only summarize the alternatives as they relate to FR18.
Alternative A: Basically, keeping things as they are. Road would stay open.
Alternative B, C, D, E, and F - close or limit access to FR18. They're
recommended alternative is C - which deals w/ limited grazing.
I must admit that Red Creek is an exceptionally beautiful area, and is
somewhat sensitive, due to the fact that most of the trail runs in the
stream bed. This is an active stream. Still, it is fairly lightly used, and
proper wheeling has had, IMHO, minimal impact. Unfortunately, there are
Yahoos, like the one Linda ran across, who are insensitive to the problems
created by poor off-road driving actions. They can and are causing
difficulties for those of us that tread lightly.
Make no mistake...I certainly hope that this trail is kept open. I have
written several letters to the FS to this effect. However, I can also
understand why they wish to close it. This may not be one we can stop.

I watched the latest in the Goldwater Lecture Series on PBS last night. The
speaker was a woman, Mrs. Ellandeana Bittner. Her family has been ranching
in the Wickenburg-Yarnell area for a little of 100 years. The main thrust of
her speech was that ranchers have to care for the land they use since its
their livelihood. That environmentalists groups can come in and tell them
[the ranchers] that everything they are doing is destroying the
environmental is a load of bull! She told a story about when she disguised
herself as an aging hippie and went to an Earth First! meeting (back in the
1970s). If you recall, back then Earth First! was planting signs along the
edges of rural highway stating that cattle and ranchers were destroying the
desert. Anyway, she asked a young woman at the meeting why they wanted to
eliminate cattle from public lands. The young woman replied, "so that
buffalo run free again." When was the last time a herd of wild buffalo ran
free in the Arizona desert? I guess you can figure out where she stands on
the issue. She also mentioned that the local and state cattle growing
associations were fighting the pseudo-science dogma being spread by the
green groups but it is coming at a price. Ranching has always been tough in
Arizona, but it is getting harder and harder.
Pretty scary isn't it? Also did you know that the two open spaces
initiatives are pretty scary. The Az legistlature's bill would convert 3% or
270,000 acres of state trust land into a presrved open space. The Sierra
Club's initiative would convert 10% or 900,000 acres. Additionally, the
selected parcels probably won't be defined or announced unitl after either
of these initiatives are passed --- if they pass! The arguement being used
by both sponsors is that it is "for the children." Get real! It isn't for
the children, it's for a small group of inidividuals who think that such
programs will save certain species from extinction! Well guess what --
almost every species alive on this planet is going to become extinct at some
point in time. The earth is not a static environment!
So much for my time on the soap box. I have some last minute Jeep
maintenance to perform before taking off for Parker.
Have a great weekend!
Linda

The E.A. is fresh off the presses on Red Creek.
