Does a hand held CB work halfway decent for trail communication? Im not
talking about the Motorola FRS style (talkabouts). I just cant see the
advantage of a small Cobra style (75xwt) over a portable hand held.

Reception, range?

Thanks,

I use a handheld (Midland 822 see: http://www.clearlight.com/jcre/820.htm)
It has an external antenna mount and a speaker out jack which fixes 2 of
the biggest problems. Poor reception in a Jeep with a roof, and really weak
speaker - most handhelds have this problem. This one can be used either way
-handheld outside the Jeep, or internal with power and antenna. It is only
$89 at this site also. This is where I got mine.

I have a portable and I am disappointed with it. I just
bought a Cobra 75 WX
ST. I really like it. Everything is in the mic and it can be
locked up by just by unhooking it from and adapter. It has a
speaker and all of the controls in the handset. You can also
hook up another speaker to the adapter box that hides under
your dash.
JCRE.COM had it for $95 plus a few for shipping and they
were really easy to work with. I also picked up a Cobra FRS
MicroTalk3 that is semi water proof. {That's for the rare
occasions when malt substances land on it.}:-)

I tried using a hand held CB at first and had a big problem with
reception/sending......probably because of the all steel body/cab on my
truck. Hanging the antenna out the window helped, but became quite a pain
while driving. If you put up an external antenna it should work pretty
well.

We are planning to run Crown King Trail on Sunday 2/6/2000. We will be at
the Southeast intersection of I-17 and State route 74 (Carefree Hwy) at
8:00am and heading out by 8:30. From this point it is about a 30-45 minute
trip to the trail. We will be monitoring channel 4 on the CB. Anyone
interested in going is welcome to join us. The trip should take 4-5 hours
(maybe less) to get to Crown King. The trail is rated a 3.0-3.5, with
optional areas rated 4. If you are interested, please respond to this
email so that I can get an idea of the size of the group.

Currently we have 4 vehicles planning the trip:
Me (Andy & Tina) Black 99TJ
Sharkey Red 97TJ
Dave (98 Ranger)
Dave's friend (I don't know the name or vehicle type)

This should be fun!

Hi all. The park is requesting that I take care of collecting all camping
fees and sign everyone in. Some of you will be getting there before me
though. Please check in with the Camp Host when you arrive anyway. When I
get there they will give me a sign in roster and a list of all the vehicles
that arrive before me. I will then collect the camping fees. Please go to
the group area because they are very full and would like to keep us all
together. There may be a few electrical hookups available for RVs in the
group area. Some of the hookup sites in the group area are being used by
folks that are allready there because the park has been using this area as an
overflow. If you need a electric/water hookup it will be first come first
serve and these spaces cost a couple dillars more per night. One last thing
- - - please bring cash for your camping fees because I would realy rather
not have to deal with checks. The basic camp fee without hookup is
$10.00/night. Thanks and I will see you all tomorow or Sat. morning
depending when you get in. I should be there with the Tucson contingent by
6:00pm. Friday.

NEED YOUR HELP
Date:
Thu, 3 Feb 2000 14:22:07 -0700
From:
"Sandee McCullen" <McCullen@w...>

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO 4-WHEELERS ..................

The State Land Department and Game & Fish NEED YOUR
HELP...............

There has been a big push to close a number of acres of State Trust
Land in
and/or near our cities boundries due to the recent directive re
"Dust
Abatement". There is a large section of State Trust Land in the
Apache
Junction area (Gold Canyon actually) that is used mainly by our
fellow ATV
and motorcycle off-highway enthusiasts but local residents want it
closed
due to "dust".

The State Land Dept and Game & Fish have joined together in putting
together
a "control & education" plan in an effort to keep this area
available to
off-highway use. If they cannot get it cleaned, signed and
education out it
most likely will be closed.

THEY NEED OUR HELP.......... They are planning a CLEAN-UP and
EDUCATION
project on February 11 & 12, 2000.

They are asking anyone and everyone interested in Off Highway use to
show up
and help clean the area (approx. 1200 acres) and distribute State
Land
Permit information to the users. They have this planned on one of
the worst
weekends possible for ASA4WDC but here's the plan....... The Land
Agencies
will furnish the trash bags and a large dumpster........ they want
us to
patrol the area for trash, pick it up, and take it back to the gate
area for
removal. There are some large pieces needing to be "dragged" or
"hauled"
back but most is just trash. 4-Wheel Drive is not required.

Friday, FEB. 11, 2000: 9:00 a.m. - ???? Anyone that can make it
out for a
few hours. Anyone retired that can spend some time??

Saturday, FEB 12 2000: As many ASA4WDC members as possible to work
from 9:00
a.m. - 12:00 p.m......... The ASA4WDC Delegate meeting is at 1:00
that same
afternoon just a couple of miles down the road from the cleanup so
hopefully
all the club delegates and board members can get moving a little
earlier and
spend some time at the clean up prior to the meeting.

For the afternoon cleanup I would direct this
request to those
recreationists that are not members of the ASA4WDC......... Virtual
Jeep
Club, independent 4-Wheelers, the organized clubs that are not
associated
with the ASA4WDC. Your help would be greatly appreciated.........
and
needed.

DIRECTIONS: Highway 60 east to Kings Ranch Road. (There's a stop
light with
a Texaco station just before Kings Ranch Rd) Stay in the right
lane.
There is a gate directly across from Kings Ranch Rd. turn. Go south
through
the gate. We will be meeting at 9:00 a.m. both days.

PLEASE R.S.V.P. Sandee McCullen at 480 832-8132 or email:
mccullen@w... or leave a message with Tammy Pike's voice mail
at
State Trust Dept.: (602) 542-2269 or email: tpike@l...

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO ANYONE ON YOUR EMAIL LIST........... OR

The AX15 fill plug is on the driver's side, right by the hydraulic clutch
line (on a TJ). If you have a 4 cyl, then you have the AX5, which has the
fill on the passenger's side. I've never seen one, so I'm not sure exactly
where on the passengers side, but it should be there.

The problem isn't with the bumper but where the bracket mounts to the frame.
If you look at a Rusty's or custom 4x4 tow hook bracket you'll notice that
they have extra mounting points on the frame (stock mopar ones also). If you
do make your own bumper I'd start with their brackets and build from there.

Obviously having tow hooks is very desirable over not having tow hooks,
however for some reason my Cherokee has none. I have seen kits you can
order
for adding them, and they seem to bolt on to the frame rail at the same
place
as the bumper mount. Now for my question... if I were to make a sturdy
steel
bumper(out of 3/16" thick c-channel), would that be strong enough to attach
tow hooks to, or would I still need to order a kit?
