Jon, don't give up on the Cleanup trip. Maybe make it just Sat. and more people will come. I can tell you that the garbage that is out there is being blamed on us.
We all have fun and I know we do not abuse our lands, but, we are an easy target and this type of thing goes a long way in improving our image.
I find it hard to believe that our people won't help out on this.

AL,
So far I have at least one confirmed person that will do the easier runs and two
full size rigs.
Has any of the Parker group come up with a some rough trails that can accept full
size rigs?
I'll get a head count tomorrow at our club meeting but so far this is what I am
sure of.
2 CJ-7's
1 or 2 FJ-40's
1 Suzuki Samari
1 FS Blazer
1 FS SB Pick-up
1 XJ

See you Friday night

Subject: Coves Cleanup

The Coves cleanup is still on for March 4 and 5. March 4 will be the
primary cleanup day so if you want to help please mark this day. I will
post regular reminders and solicitations between now and then. It looks
like there will be some camping and if enough folks are still around on
Sunday we can cleanup so more and certainly work the trails a bit more also.

Does anyone have a large trailer that they could pull in a ways while the
trail is still flat? We could then use that as a holding spot for trash bags.

Does anyone know how to get in touch with the Park Service to let them know
what we are going to do?

I suspect that many don't know about or at least don't use the power of egroups. It is free and it is very powerful, so I thought I would post this as a reminder.

AZ_VJC egroups page: http://www.egroups.com/group/az_vjc/info.html

This is the main page of our group on egroups. All past messages are stored on the site, so if you delete message(s) from your mailbox that you didn't mean to, like directions or dates and times, you can go to the egroups page and reread them at any time.

From this page you can also view the calendar for any trips that have been posted. I highly recommend that anyone planning a trip post it here in addition to the regular emails. This can save a great deal of requests for repeat directions and such.

From here you can also see the databases. Currently there are only 2 active ones; Classified ads and Tech Links. I would love to see entries made to Tech Links, so if you know of any good ones or have one of your own, post it here. The classified ads will work also if there are things to be sold added to the list and people look there. Delete items after they are sold or after you give up on selling them and this will become even more useful.

There is a member list with all members and most of the email address. (A single letter is omitted from everyones email address - probably to prevent list burglary.)

There is a links section for you to enter your personal web site for others to see.

Also, don't forget the AZ_VJC web site: http://azvjc.web.com

We also have a PhotoPoint page but it looks like most people with cameras have one of their own.

I believe Costco has the Motorola Talkabout Plus family radios on sale
this week for around $49. I think you have to have the coupon - $23
off - to get the price. This coupon should have been mailed out to

Jon,

Let just make this a cleanup and optional campout only. No swap meet or
potluck. Most of the Jeeps that people own in this club can't carry very much.
I'll contact John Payne (Tonto National Forest Public Affaris) and let him
know the dates we will be out there. I will also announce the cleanup at the
ASA4WDC Q1 Delegates meeting on Feb 12 and to the Lo-Rangers at the next club
meeting.

I need a meeting place and time.

No you shouldn't have. You did just what you should have done and the
dealer made good on it. Disconnecting the odometer to falsify your
mileage is a _dishonest_ and _wrong_ thing to do. You wouldn't want to
buy a used vehicle with only 20,000 miles, and then find out that it
really had 60,000, and "hadn't moved" for years.

I had my recently destroyed rear brake fixed at a shop called Just Brakes in
Mesa. They do good work there and I don't have any problems with their
warranties. They are reasonably priced and can do most work the same day.
Please don't consider this a glowing recommendation. It was the only shop I
could find that could repair my rear brakes without me having to make an
appointment for later in the week.

Anyway, I picked up the Jeep after work and, of course the shop manager wanted
to talk 4-wheeling. He told me about his last trip to the coves where he and
his buddies made it out to the 5th cove and then decided that taking the trail
back to Butcher Jones would take way too long and so they decided to go cross
country instead. His rational was that the desert had destroyed by a brushfire
and there wasn't any vegetation to damage. I told him in no uncertain term
that the Tonto National Forest does not allow cross country travel in the
forest or in the Rolls OHV area. Of course, this turned into several minutes
of him ranting and raving about all these areas in Arizona being closed to OHV
use. Yada yada yada..... I told him that it was people like him and his
friends that helped this happen. I don't think he got the point.

I agree with Dave. If you were to sell a vehicle that
the cable had been disconnected from with out letting
the person or dealer buying it and stating the
odometer reading was not correct on the title, you are
also breaking the law. If one is that concern with
warranty there are options out there for extended
warrantees, some I believe can even be picked up after
the manufactures warrantee has ran out(although after
the manufactures warrantee has ran out the price
increases quite a bit).

I think it is quite ironic that everyone complains
about being screwed (for the lack of better words) by
different companies and repair shops, but if it
happens to be the other way around it is exceptable.
Honesty is alway the best bet, dishonesty will come
back to haunt you. This group should have seen this
in the last week. Prime example is what happened with
the OSMTJ none of us will being using that dealer for
any type of service or sales in the future.

You did the right thing and the dealer took care of
you just like they should have

rolink&path=News/Category.NRdb@2@9&storypath=News/Story_2000_01_26.NRdb@2@15@3@379

You can see by the last sentence in the excerpt that Mr. Dombeck
thinks that the road
policy will conclusively close roads, and is a done deal. I
appreciate him giving us just
another piece of evidence to use when we litigate the policy. Even
if it may not look
like it at times, this is still the United States, and agencies are
not permitted to
circumvent NEPA and the APA by making public involvement just an
illusion.

The time is now to send Mr. Dombeck a message that statements by him
expressing a
pre-determined outcome for the roads policy is a violation of the
Administrative Procedure
Act, 5 U.S.C. 553(c) and we are holding him accountable. A brief
postcard letter can be

Excerpt from San Francisco Chronicle:

Another reason for closing roads is monetary. The Forest Service's
budget includes enough
money to maintain only about 17 percent of its roads, said Dombeck,
so it is proceeding
with a new plan that could ultimately result in the closure of the
rest.

"We have an $11 billion road maintenance backlog," he said.
"Essentially, we have more
roads than we can afford."

Last year, the Forest Service declared an 18-month moratorium on
road-building, as Dombeck
said, "to get a timeout." In the next few weeks, he said, the agency
will release a draft
management policy on roads.

The policy will direct forest supervisors to meet with local
officials to determine which
Forest Service roads are crucial to regional transportation needs,
said Dombeck. In the
end, he said, there will be fewer roads.

Dear Mr. Dombeck,

In the 1/26/00 issue of the San Francisco Chronicle reporting on
your speech to the
Commonwealth Club of California, you were quoted as stating, "In the
end there will be
fewer roads".

I'm sure that you must have been misquoted. As Chief of the Forest
Service I can not
believe that you would be so careless as to make a statement
indicating that the
conclusions of the roads policy have already been decided upon. To
do so would be to
violate the Administrative Procedure Act (APA), section 553(c) which
states that the
public must be given an opportunity to participate in rulemaking.
Such public
participation in the roads policy would only be an illusion if the
Forest Service has
already decided the outcome of the rulemaking.

Please contact me if you were misquoted by the San Francisco
Chronicle. If I do not hear
from you within 30 days I will have to conclude that the statement
was made by you and
that the Forest Service stands in violation of the APA regarding the
soon to be released
roads policy.

Sincerely yours,

Thanks,

From what I hear they are now also putting in voice recorders like airplanes
also. As well as data recorders.... Ie: little black boxes. in case of
accidents and or mishaps.... I am also see information that the Big three
are using Low-Jack Vehicle recovery more and more. My understanding is that
they are placing it in most vehicles and are not activating it unless you
ask the delear.. (agian hearsay) Who says thaa they can't just activate it
when they want by satallite, like Onsat...
Food for thought!!
