Subject: Re: wheres my ARB! (home gear changes)
I tried one of these myself with mine, ended up wasting a set of 4.56's so
be very careful that you guys get the pinion depth and the backlash set
absolutely on the money. It takes very little time to grenade a set of
gears, plus you can also damage your axle housing if things go really bad.
Which also happened to mine from the previous gear job done by the dealer.
They overtightened the pinion gear and the bearing burned up so bad the race
locked and spun tearing up the housing, adding another $600 to my bill, and
thats only cause I was lucky to find a housing on my own. TJ rears, even
the crapola 35c are hard to come by. What should have only cost me $1600,
ended up setting me back an extra $1000 plus I killed a good day and a half
of my own time ruining a set of gears in my garage. I guess I mainly wanted
to do it because I wanted to try it, and everyone else says its "too hard"..
Well, I still dont think its too hard, you just need patience in having to
dissasemble and reassemble to get the pinion depth right, plus I never could
get that damn crush sleeve to crush. The gears I got were from Dana Spicer,
which come with the bearings and also got an install kit from west coast
differentials (www.differentials.com) they seemed to have the best price
around, and get the part to you in like 2 days max. The other problem was
the shim kit had nothing but paper thin shims and 1/8" and 5/32", after
putting the detroit locker in there, the 1/8" shim was too big pushing the
ring against the pinion so hard you couldnt turn the tires. Then I tried a
stack of thin shims which didnt cut it either.. So also get a set full blown
shim kit too.. even if they say the install kit comes with some, cause it
wasnt enough to get mine done.
Offroad Unlimited will do gears for $225 per housing which is the best price
I could find by far, but they often have a 2 week waiting list and take at
least 2 to 3 days to get it done.. But hey, look at it like this, 18 hours
of hard labor and two days of sore body and that was just for one set of
gears, i didnt even try the front.. The 225 is a bargan to me now!
Anyhow, thats what I know about gears. Hope it helps you out.

It's a midsize Cherokee. I don't know specific part #'s or brands. We have
whole jeep - only damage is to body due to rollover. The front drive shaft
was making some noise but we think it was just U-joints (didn't get a chance
to work on it before accident). 4WD works fine & engine runs good. For the
parts you listed, we're asking:
Axles $175 each
Tranny $400
Transfer Case $300
Drive Shafts ? (If you just want these, I'll have to determine price)
$1,000 for all of above or you can take the whole jeep for $1500 firm. Let
me know if you're interested in looking at it. It runs and would be
drivable
but for body & glass damage.

I have a '98 TJ that I bought used from Earnhardt's in Aug. About a week
ago I got it back from the dealer's service dept. I had 35900 miles on it
and the transfer case was jumping out of 4x4 low so I took it in. They
replaced it. While driving home today from work I hear a THUMP. I get home
look under the jeep only to find the entire TC skid plate soaked in fluid.
I get in, turn it on, and play with the TC shifter; It is gone. No linkage
at all. I drove it around the block, it feels like it is stuck in 2-wheel
drive. My question is . . . is the dealer gonna give me a hard time cause
now I have 36050 miles on it? I'm wondering what luck everyone has getting
the dealers to fix stuff and what could the problem be?

They originally fixed it under warranty so I think they would be badly mistaken to refuse warranty service after 150 miles. I bought mine from Earnhadrt also. They claim to be the Jeepers friend - they have a Jeep owner discount program and all that. Don't let them refuse to fix this under warranty! You might want to remind them the AZ_VJC has over 200 members and is very active on the Internet. Bad news travels fast, good news takes longer but we still tell each other when a dealer or retailer or service organization does good and bad work. They should fix this. Go get 'em.
Let us know how you make out.

I beleive that they have to fix it since it was in for repair prior to
the warrenty expiring for the basic same problem.

Ross Skinner believes that he can help get some press, but more

Good idea. How bout a spring clean up sometime in March...combine it w/ a
cookout, as you suggest. Should get a good turn out. Unfortunately, the
place gets trashed pretty heavily. I remember last year...we pulled out a
ton of stuff, but several weeks later, it was trashed again....and your
absolutely right...the yahoos that do this, do it on other trails as well,
and it hurts our efforts to keep trails open. Clean up runs are something we
can do to counteract this stuff.

Sorry about that!
Texaco station on US60 east of Florence Junction. Flo Junc is east of Apache

Iam interested in helping cleanup out there. We use it alot
and should help take care of it. I will be making the Parker
run next weekend and would like to see a time setup next
month while it is still cool.
I have a friend that owns a marketing/ad company. He could
be helpful getting the word out on our efforts.

You can count me and the kids in on that one. We had a blast last time and
the Coves really need some help. We picked up trash everywhere we stopped
last weekend and barely made a dent. The second cove looks horrible.
The kids and I are planning a camping trip to the second cove for the first
weekend in March.......y'all are welcome to come with us. Maybe a
clean-up/camping/cook-out/swap-meet/weekend kind of thing.

How about setting March 4 and 5 as the Second Annual:
Coves Cleanup Weekend, Spring Barbecue, Camp Out and Swap Meet?
The second Cove definitely won't be big enough for this group, but Len and his kids are going to set up a base camp there - maybe we can take over the first cove also (they are only a killer-hill apart!)
If these date(s) work for enough people, I'll organize it and ask for volunteers. Let me know with a response to this email, please.
Keith, mark your calendar! We missed you at the last one of these.
Does anyone recall who notified the Rangers of our plans? I seem to recall that it was Doug or Dan.

Just a subtle reminder!
Most public lands in Arizona (USFS, USNM, USNP, BLM, AZSTL, military and
Indian reservations, etc.) require vehicles to be licensed and insured.

It runs and would be
drivable
but for body & glass damage.

replaced it.

Go get 'em.

I beleive that they have to fix it since it was in for repair prior to
the warrenty expiring for the basic same problem.
